"The multi-core version is cutting edge. If it works the results are great, if not try the standard one it should always work."
I always took that to mean: if it doesn't blow up, use it because it will be better. And since there were no functional problems, I've been using the MT version forever (i.e. since shortly after I started playing, around the 1.0.0 release of Minecraft).
With the unusual release schedule this time, I had a few days to play around with the A/A2 previews, and was really pleased with them - wondering, of course, how much better it might be when MT was released.
For me, it turns out that MT is not as good. I also briefly tried Smooth, and can't say that it's obviously different than MT. A2 is the clear winner.
There's no real issue with framerate in either case; it's typically around 60, give or take. But I get lag spikes with MT, and these are virtually non-existent with A2. It's supposed to be the other way around, right?
The simplest example is to launch the game, do nothing for 20 secs or so while it stabilizes, then spin around quickly. With MT I will always get one, sometimes two, big lags that freeze the display for a noticeable time. With A2, it is consistently smooth.
Or, I can take a long minecart trip in mostly one direction, so it's constantly scrambling to load new things in front of me. With A2 I will occasionally see a small spike, but it may not even go above the top of the general graph area. With MT, I get spikes 4-5 times (or more) taller than the graph. It's possible that as of 1.2.5 these spikes are less frequent and regular than under 1.2.3, but they are just as big and distracting.
I'm not complaining. OptiFine is a very nice piece of work, and I (finally) got around to donating today. But I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and if perhaps there are some particular option settings that I should review? (Note: I always play offline, which is probably not typical.)
A2 works so well I don't feel a need for more. But I am feeling a little stupid for having apparently wasted a lot of time because I thought it would be better to be "cutting edge", so I thought it worth mentioning.
Ok I'm noticing something with Optifine AA and Multicore (the only ones I've tested) (for 1.2.4)
Some of the custom colors aren't being used, as well as other features not working.
...
Custom swamp colors aren't being used, WatercolorX.png, better grass, better snow, CTM, biome colors for other blocks and potion colors.
Fog colors, and animations do work though.
The only mods I'm running are Modloader and Rei's Minimap. Nothing else.
All of the listed features except potion colors should work with OptiFine, check your installation.
Most probably some other mod has overwritten the OptiFine classes.
hey guys i have a question, very sorry if its been resolved before
i installed the multicore version but it gives me a black screen and instantly closes right after the "simulating world for a bit"
is there a way for me to fix it? ive been following optifine since 1.1 and for some strange reason none of the multicore versions work
ive read in the description, the multicore version can be used on a single core
is the multicore version only for 2nd generation multicores? im still using a core2duo if thats the problem
i cant really give out the infos since it gives me a black screen, no more info i can give out
right now im using the smooth version and everything is as expected of optifine, keep up the amazing work
I'm having a problem with using Optifine and GSLS shaders. I'm using the multi-core version of OptiFine, if that matters. I followed directions for installing Magic Launcher, which went well, and I added OptiFine to the mod list, which went well, and minecraft runs perfectly. I used Sonic Ether's Unbelievable Shaders, and patched minecraft.jar like the instruction said, but after I do that, OptiFine shows an error. When I run minecraft, it shows the Mojang logo, then quickly fades to white and stays there.
Here's the log:

This is just one of those mods where you say: "Why is this not ALREADY in the game?"
My guess?
I'd guess it's about 4 months of programmer time for someone that knows graphics API's / drivers really well to do. In USA dollars, that's about $25,000 - $35,000 worth for a salaried employee, more for a 1099 independent, plus whatever international issues related to taxes (etc.) for a Swedish company to buy something from a non-Swedish individual.
So I'd guess that it's price and legal difficulties that I don't pretend to understand.

using MC Patcher to install but don't think that should matter
EDIT: apparently it has something to do with the HD Fonts package, so if you are using MCPatcher disable that
MCPatcher is NOT needed for HD textures, HD fonts and BetterGrass, they are included in OptiFine.
Install OptiFine without MCPatcher HD features for best performance. If you absolutely want MCPatcher:: For HD Textures or RandomMobs install OptiFine without the "aaw.class" (the mipmaps and fog distance will not be active). For HD fonts install without the "nl.class". For BetterGrass install without "vl.class".
Hello there!
First off, let me say that this mod is amazing! This, along with the HD Player mod, are my only "must have" mods.
All of the other supremely awesome options aside, I really have to thank you for the inclusion of mipmapping!
As someone who uses and creates HD textures, I can definitively say that this mod makes the world no longer look like it was just gang-raped on a pinball machine by an errant band of pixel-thugs!
It really open the doors to having HD packs look nice beyond 3 feet in front of your face.
That aside, while working on my texturepack I've been trying to play around a little bit with the different texture possibilities this mod makes available, and I keep finding little tweaks and such that I think would help out the look of the game hopefully without being huge projects.
Honestly, I didn't write any down so I've forgotten most, but the two I can remember right now seem like they'd be fairly simple.
- Ghast Fireballs. It always looked silly to me how their actual texture was placed behind the fire texture ingame. If one could move the fireball to be in front of the fire texture, it'd give it a sort of flame-trail look when being shot at you, as well as allow for some cooler textures for the item.
See what I mean?
- Glass transparency. I find it odd that the game allows Ice to make full use of variant translucency, but Glass is stuck with the average "every pixel is either opaque or transparent!". If glass (and maybe even iron bars) could be made to use transparency the way Ice does, imagine the awesome window textures that could made!
Anywho, just a little praise and a few ideas I had.
Once again, thank you for the great mod and all your work!
Hey guys im having problem with optifine multi core .Some flashes/artifact appear in game.Im tryin to disable Threaded Optimization / OpenGL Threading but i cant find them in my Intel graphics control panel(Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for mobile) .Can anyone tell me how to fix this. Thanks
First I have to say, I love your mod. The mipmaps are amazing and really add extra beauty to the game. But I am slightly ocd about my FPS and need to know, why can i run an average of somewhere between 70/90 FPS with out the mod on far and fancy settings, while with the mod it averages closer to 40/50?
Also, can someone give me some suggestions on settings to use that come with the mod?
There are some thinks like preloaded chunks, dynamic update, and a few others that I havent quite been able to decide if I like yet.
My Specs are here if anyone needs them for some reason:
i5 2320 processor
10GB Ram
2TB h-drive
nvida 520 Graphics card
Win-7
...I think that's it.
Thanks for the great mod and do keep up the work my good sir!
love the mod but there is a glitch er something when instead of the water being the blue texture it usualy is its grey im not sure why but i could use a reply. keep up the good work
Brand new 1.2.5 .jar, and I used Magic Launcher to install. This error code pops up. The regular jar runs fine.
