I think i saw an answer round here somewhere, but i cant find it... :/
Is there a fix for the flickering chunks? Coz i spend allot of time in the jungle sitting outside my house, and the fact that every 4.3 secconds the ground disappears for up to 3 seconds is getting annoying.
Also, for anyone who was experiencing large lag spikes every 4 or so seconds, use the MagicLauncher and set it to 256 (says in OP). Worked a charm.
EDIT: That worked, at the cost of about 10fps. Fair trade though.
EDIT2: Connected textures isn't working correctly. It doesn't appear to be texturing from the texturePack...
Not a supported texture pack.
EDIT3: My water is also invisible... At night.
I've installed Magic Launcher
I've downloaded one of the packages
I've done easy installation method A
But it says No mods found when i add Optifine.zip
???Help???
While the memory-handling in Java is often called quite poor I really doubt this harddisk pagefile mumbo jumbo you all allegedly experience is really happening. Unless you _manually_ allocate too much memory to Java this should never happen. The default max heap size value Java reserves for itself is your RAM/4, the initial size RAM/16. If under that circumstances anything from Java gets into your pagefile you have far more severe problems than Java using too much memory, because that means that your OS and other programs use more than 3/4 of your whole physical memory when you are trying to play a game and should have nothing but essential programs running.
Under such circumstances allocating less ram to Java will help. However as long as you have unused physical memory the best thing to do is to allocate as much from that unused physical memory as possible to Java, because of the way memory-management works in Java regarding the garbage collector.
This is not the case for Minecraft. The default launcher checks and makes sure that the allocated memory is at least 1GB even if the computer has lass than 4 GB memory.
A vanilla, non-modded Minecraft is more than happy with 256MB ram, even with HD textures (up to 64x) it does not need much more. If you have 64bit java it may need a bit more memory.
The Java garbage collector is "lazy" (which is not a bad thing) and may happily use all the memory up to the limit. It can not detect that some of this memory may be swapped to disk.
Oh, thank you! I missed that :$

The texturepack is not supporting connected textures.
Love this mod and most of the time it works great, but i have a question regarding pre-loaded chunks and dynamic updates. Are they really all that use full? I don't use them myself and really don't need to I suppose, but more FPS is always nice. Also the flickering fix for the muti core has worked wonders so far.
Can someone please help me. I used magic launcher to use the optifine mod (standard) and it worked good, I had all the options. However, the texture pack I love and use (Inspiration(32x)by TobiwanK3nobi v16) looked very odd, the mobs were white. I used mcpatcher to clear up this issue, but now optifine gets errors in magic launcher. It says this in the log file....

Does this mean I can't use my favourite texture pack anymore?
You cannot use both Optifine and MCPatcher on Minecraft. You can only have one of the two. Get a new clean .jar file and just use either optifine or MCPatcher.
This mod is so108 great!!!
Thank you so much for your work!
EDIT: Just set all settings except Chunk updates to maximum. Went from about 30-50 frames per second (standard minecraft) to 80-100 frames per second!
Think I gonna be able to switch back to my 512² pixel texture pack again!
Love you!
EDIT2: Now getting serious lag spikes with my higher TP (not save ones), which last for a few seconds. Any idea what option to change?
Got it. With starting the unmodded version once, my options were gone.
No worries, I may not be an expert on much, but I've been a General IT Consultant for a few years. So I at least know what you meant. And actually you gave what I needed to fix my problem.. So thanks for that. Sometimes it's easy to get stubern, and not try an easy solution I might have missed. The ego of a troubleshooter, I suppose. =/
I'm using Java 7, and the SDK as well, for server performance (which does seem to help my server btw). And after I raised java's memory to 2GB (which I foolishly assumed was not possible on 32bit) in the control panel (which I forgot about, since I've been focusing on the memory allocation in the client launcher command line BAT file) it actually appears to have fixed my Out of Memory crashes almost completely, on Normal render distance. (Haven't tried Far yet, but that's next. heh Not getting my hopes up.)
Java 7 may not be what you call "stable", but it does seem to work just fine, even for me and my less-than-ideal situation.
Also, someone suggested I use the MT version of OptiFine.. And I'm REALLY impressed with how well it works. Last time I tried that, a while back, it only gave me a black screen.. But now it works better than the other versions, and I tweaked my graphics card settings a bit, and no more flashy-pistons or weird transparent rendering flashes.
You can use many mods together, as long as they're compatible (not overwriting eachothers files, for example)
Well wouldn't these mods be compatible with each other then? Because I want to use the multi-core one plus the FPS booster at the same time. By the way I'm a her.
I recently tried installing the Optifine AA mod.
However, whenever I install it manually, I get a black screen.
Whenever I use magic launcher, it says: Not compatible.
I got a pretty new laptop with a decent graphic card.
Please help.
Optifine AA is not yet updated for Minecraft 1.2.3

Failure on my part. Read it like you were asking if you could only use 1 mod at a time (of ANY mod..)
Realize now you were talking about the different 'versions' of Optifine. Heh.
If you use Multi-Core, it includes the features from Standard and Smooth. (Mentioned in the OP )
So eh, you can only use one version at a time Hehe.

Ah, ok. Makes sense
So what needs to be changed to make it supported? Just curious.

Java 7 is stable. That guy's just full of crap.
