As part of a larger mod I am working on with Tigii, I have been looking at a lot of biome related code. It had always struck me as odd that Birch and Pine trees were only ever one color, and since the code was a pretty easy fix, I figured I'd 'fix' that and release it for anyone interested. =)
All this mod does is add a pinecolor.png and a birchcolor.png to the misc folder in the .jar and color the leaves according to those files. For the pine color, I just flipped the foliagecolor to the other triangle that is colored but unused? (Perhaps Notch intended to have them change color but changed his mind for unknown reasons?) For the birch color I just messed with hue/saturation/lightness sliders of the regular foliagecolor. I didn't do much with these because I've never been good with editing the biome triangles. =S If anyone who has more skill at that would like to take a crack at it and let me include it in the mod I'd be very appreciative.
Here are some screenshots:
--If anyone with modding experience is interested, me and Tigii are looking for someone who could help us out. We're both pretty new with modding and so things are going kind of slow at the moment, though speeding up as we learn. =) We are working on a mod to increase variety between biomes, if you are interested in helping us please PM one of us. Thanks--
Got the mod working and changed the colors to your liking already?! I'm impressed. =D Would you mind sharing your custom colors? I'd love to see them. =)
This is wonderful! Having just finished messing with the standard biome triangles and Nandonalt's stone biome mod, I really look forward to doing something with this.
You guys have worked really fast...I can't believe how quickly you've come up with something that has such far reaching effects on the landscape. Awesome work and more beauty for Minecraft! :smile.gif:
Many, many thanks!
When I have something by way of my own version of the triangle, I'll be sure to post it here if you don't mind!
Glad you like it, and I don't mind at all, I'd love to see what you do with the triangles. =D In fact, I'll probably ask you for permission to include it with the mod as I'm terrible with the triangles, and yours are always amazing. ;D
Ah brilliant, glad people are starting to mess with biomes to give us more variety in our games so thank you for this. Oh and Glimmar I look forward to any edits you make to the biome triangle for this, like your work!
Great mod! You should submit to Mojang. The next mod should be grayscale on the sides of grass blocks. THis is another thing that has always bugged me, if the top of the grass block is biome specific, shouldn't the side be too?
Got this update for 1.4. I'm going to see if I can come up with some better triangles over the next couple of days, we'll see what I come up with.
@ML32 How do you submit these things to Mojang? Also as far as the side grass, there is a version of Risugami's ModLoader that does that, as well as a couple other versions of it, so I'll leave that one to those who have already done it.

This sounds very cool. I just found out how to get biome triangles to work yesterday, put in glimmar's, and have been enjoying noticeably different vegetation colors for the first time.
Can you explain which corners of the square are hot/cold and wet/dry?
Also why exactly is the birch PNG 1 triangle, but the pine one is 2? Which parts (if any) of the squares are unused?
EDIT: Testing with the grass color, i found even when i colored the whole thing outrageously non-green, there were still large swathes of grass that were the standard green (right next to my purples and reds), so apparently there are some glitches or other complications with biome colors that probably apply to the trees too.
Notch tweeted that 1.5 will have the side of grass blocks biome colored, so there's probably no point in messing with it.
I've had things come up lately haven't been able to do much, so the updated triangles are still coming, as is an update to 1.4_01 (though it almost feels pointless at this point, I'm sure the day I update will be the day 1.5 comes out. ;:cool.gif:
I've been looking into the biome and terrain generation code a bit, and I have some grand plans for it I hope to reveal soon.
@eleazzaar: I'm not sure why you are still getting green except that you must have missed a spot, because the triangles cover everything. Try making a new 512x512 png and just fill it all bright red. If you are still getting green then I'm perplexed but it should work from everything I've tried.

The triangles only take from the bottom left triangle section of the image, like so:

The only reason the pine has two is I took the normal tree color triangle and flipped it as it had two and I was curious.
I'll try do the red grass test in 1.5 and see what happens. And if i come up with good triangles i'll post them so you may use if you wish.
EDIT: grass seems to be fully biome colored in 1.5
