I'm Back! After several months of an apparent lack of interest in modding, I've decided I missed it and am back. I'm not going to update my old mods yet. Instead, I'm going to be diving headfirst into my elevator mod. In fact, I'm farther than ever and super close to being able to release a video. However, if there's enough interest in my metal detector mod, I'll consider updating it before the elevator is finished.
Obviously, gates have been added to the game officially and as such SpaDusAGate will be discontinued and removed.

[WIP] Elevators
Elevators are coming to Minecraft!
FAQs
Q: When will the elevator mod be released?
A: When it's ready. I'm currently a student trying to finish my Bachelor's Degree. So the amount of time I can spend on coding mods is limited. I'm doing what I can, though. Keep an eye on my progress below!
There will be two new recipes to Minecraft with this mod: the elevator shaft, and the elevator door. Stack elevator shafts as high as you like. Then place an elevator door wherever you want a new floor to appear. That's it! When you place the elevator door, the elevator will automatically create the new floor; no user configuration required. When you interact with the elevator door, you'll enter the elevator and have a window pop up asking which floor you'd like to go to. It'll go to that floor and let you out. There's not really much left to the imagination.
Progress
This mod is going to be a fairly large one. It will require a lot of time and has some pretty complicated pieces to put together. These are the pieces I know have to be done right now. As I complete them or think of new things I need to do, I'll update this page.
yellow is in progress, green is complete
Create the elevator shaft block/item
Get the elevator shaft to render correctly
Get elevator blocks to stack correctly in the world.
Create the elevator door item
Create the door/shaft interaction
Get the GUI stuff working to select which floor to go to.
Figure out a way to support multiple elevators in one world

Metal Detector [1.5_01]
Release Notes 3/19/2011 - 1.3_01
- First release 4/5/2011 - 1.4_01
- Updated for 1.4_01 4/27/2011
- Updated for 1.5_01
How to create
A metal detector is crafted as follows:
How it works
When the metal detector is in the player's hand, it scans a 6x6x10 region in the direction the player is facing. If it detects a type of ore, the appropriate colored bar will display on the screen of the metal detector. The currently supported ore types are: coal, iron, diamond, redstone, gold, and lapis lazuli. That's it. It's that easy.
Installation
Metal Detector requires Risugami's Mod Loader v5
Once you install ModLoader v5, simply download metal detector and add the files to the minecraft.jar file.
It works as advertised, but I couldn't get used to it.
Maybe the detection area is too big. Iron and coal are so prevalent that I got about a zillion hits and it seemed like random luck if I found anything. Knowing ore could be 5 blocks up or 5 blocks down is disheartening, too. I'd get a coal hit and dig towards it, not find anything and get another coal hit. Or the detector might have 2 deposits in range. It was confusing.
Switching from pick to block to get a new reading is annoying. Can the image of the block in the hotkey bar be made to show current readings so I can watch it while I dig?
Does the length of the bar in the block mean something specific? For example- I would like it if it scanned in the direction I was facing for say- 10 blocks. When I walk towards a deposit, it adds one more square of that ore. 1=9 away, 2- 8 away, 3= 7 away... 10= on it. Or something like that.
And maybe the elevation of the ore relative to my position could be indicated by a negative or positive number. -5= 5 blocks down, +5= 5 blocks up.
It's potentially a very useful and interesting mod. I just think it needs to be tweaked a little.
Thanks for giving it a try. I'll consider the suggestions you gave. I made it scan 5 blocks up and 5 down as a way to make it a little more challenging to find ore. I didn't want to provide a tool that said "in 5 blocks you'll hit diamond." For that same reason, I don't really like the idea of giving a number saying it's 3 blocks above you. The point of the game is to mine for minerals. If someone didn't want to spend the time actually searching for the ore, they should just get single player commands and /give themselves whatever they want.
Now, I do agree that it's a little disheartening not really knowing where the ore actually is. So I'd be willing to give an indicator saying up or down, without telling you how many blocks up or down. I'd also be willing to eliminate scanning above the person, as a metal detector generally isn't used to look up.
As far as it displaying stuff while it's not your current tool, I'd have to think about how to actually accomplish that without making it too easy to find ore. Maybe it'll work without the up/down indicator. Or maybe it'll just flash when ore is around, without telling you the type.
The overall goal of this mod is to make it more fun to search for ore. I'm not interested in simply making a tool that points you directly to ore. To that end, I'll entertain implementing whatever suggestions you have. With that said, if the community simply isn't interested in what I have in mind for this, I'll implement what's desired by most people. I'm open to suggestions and I'll certainly take yours into consideration.
Thanks for using my mod, and look forward to more!
This looks like a very handy tool for players who have patience to actually mine and play a real game, rather that INVediting everything! Bookmarked for reference! Well done, and great originality!
Ok. I haven't tried this mod, yet, but I was curious as to how it handled multiple ores. Thanks!
The larger the bar, the more ores of that type are being detected. The bar on the display can only be 9 high. So it'll indicate how many individual ore block there are up to 9. After 9 the bars will just be as big as they can be.
The mod doesn't have a way to distinguish between different sets of deposits, though. So if there's a deposit of 2 iron on the left and a deposit of 7 on the right, the iron bar on the display will be 9...But you may only find 2 or 7 (depending on which deposit you find first). So just keep that in mind when the display shows you hit the diamond jackpot only to find 2 diamond ore. Rest assured, the other 7 are somewhere close by!
Awesome mod! Your metal detector is full of win! :biggrin.gif:
Its function are both accurate and flavored in improving mining efficiency.
Easy to made, but tons of profit it may bring. Just by holding it towards different directions, the bar of minerals would clearly point the minerals out. Simple and useful! :biggrin.gif:
After I using it in the already dig out mining tunnel near the main larva level, it only took me less than 20 minutes to find 29 diamonds;that's nearly impossible in original minecraft. :3
Notch should really make some kind device like this which would save a lot of time in mining!xD
I started from an almost fresh minecraft.jar, only mods installed being modloader, toomanyitems and singleplayer commands. As far as i know these mods are supposed to be mostly compatible. Is this mod modloader compatible? Wich other mods are required?
Also, i use a texture pack, but that can't be a problem since the game blackscreens after i click on login.
Gates is only compatible with ModLoader v5. Also, make sure you delete your META-INF directory in the jar if you're starting with a new one. If that doesn't work, go to a command line and type this in:
Quite a nifty mod right there. Very useful and easy to use, but seems a bit too easy to obtain compared to its extreme usefulness. Never the less, it's very fun to use and makes work easier. for you good sir.

@Klona, thanks for the awesome screens. Mind if I use a few in the main description? Glad you're enjoying the mod!
Sure, feel free to use. I'm glad this screen shots could help. :biggrin.gif:
The texture pack I used is jolicraft and eld's pack. :smile.gif: They are both very awesome texture pack. :biggrin.gif:
However, I suggested that maybe you should ask their authors' permission first to put this in your main description or give them some credits and link to their post in your main description, in order to avoiding some unhappy and unnecessary misunderstanding which could happen. You know, no offense here, but just in case. :smile.gif:

If you have any suggestions, constructive criticisms or idea for other mods, feel free to let me know.
Can you post a picture of it ingame?
It scans the area in the direction the person is facing. So if you are facing east, it will scan the area like this.
This view is from the top looking down.
= player facing east
[] = empty space
= scan area

This view is from the side

So if you can visualize it, the mod scans a 3x3 square in the direction the player is facing 5 blocks high and 5 blocks deep.
I'll try to get a picture of it in game later tonight or tomorrow.

Indeed. It detects 6 different blocks and all 6 can be represented at the same time.
Ok. I haven't tried this mod, yet, but I was curious as to how it handled multiple ores. Thanks!
