Regarding MC1.8: The update will be split into several smaller updates, therefore to avoid losing the use of SPC until it is updated for 1.8 stay on 1.7. Also the SPC update will not be released until either MCP is out OR all the features of 1.8 have been released and I get several hours of my time to update the mod.
