Wow, you guys have become so jaded and developed such strong knee-jerk reactions to everything and everyone and in such insulting ways. Perhaps you ought to take some time off from this particular thread and just enjoy minecraft for a while.
In any case, as always, Risugami will make the decision and do as he wishes which is his right. I've no particular interest in arguing with others who think they are Risugami's handlers over reading his mind.
* And since the fact that Searge and team decided to go to the effort of updating MCP for 12w17a, which is no tiny feat, (and that MCP has a relationship with Risugami) has completely eluded you as having any meaning or value whatsoever.. Then I'm glad such decisions are not in your hands.
Some of us are gruff and a bit tactless, yes. However, there's no point sugarcoating certain truths. Since the conception of snapshots and pre-releases and whatnot, the only people who ever suffered from modders not updating are the people who are stupidly feature hungry. They want every little new feature and they want their mods. The people who suffer are the people who can't stand having either or.
Some modders cater to these people. Many modders don't.
We don't consider ourselves "Risugami's handlers" or anything. We don't think we speak for him. We don't act like we speak for him. We merely give our on insights based on what we know ourselves. Just like you speculated Risu would update, Laijka and I speculate that he won't. I don't think even once we've said we know Risugami won't.
And yes, MCP team updated for the snapshot. That's irrelevant. MCP does NOT have a relationship with Risugami beyond the fact that many users use MCP and Modloader together and that Risugami no doubt assists in whatever necessary MCP decompile fixes for Modloader.
Risugami doesn't use MCP. Risugami isn't dependent on MCP.

The only snapshot I recall there being an update for was one of the 1.9 pre betas just before initial release of 1.0 at Minecon. It hung around for a few weeks as I recall. So, anything else is just speculation and conjecture. Maybe he will, maybe he won't.

To tell them how to live is to prevent them living.
You keep saying you have only Modloader installed but you don't. There's something else left over and it wants GUI API. So, either clean out your mods folder or install GUI API.
Ahh. Thank you so much. I honestly never knew that you had to do that, as I never had any problems with it. And yes, I know, I may be stupid for even asking and not clearing it out.
Some of us are gruff and a bit tactless, yes. However, there's no point sugarcoating certain truths. First, having been a part of this community in various capacities for a while now even before officially registering with this forum, I can understand where your animosity comes from, I really do. But it's best to keep it all in perspective and context.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with people wanting things, especially things that people want them to want, like their game their mods etc. In fact, this place would be pretty quiet and boring if they didn't.
Where the animosity comes in is from constantly dealing with a bunch of vocal people who haven't yet learned how to properly show their appreciation for what they are being given and instead demanding things and sometimes being very sour with their demands as if they were actually paying for what they are getting.
Unfortunately it also comes from essentially providing non-stop free tech-support for a never-ending flow of new people into this community that simply don't know what we know and don't make the same assumptions we do and are completely unfamiliar with the ins and outs of using mods for this or any other game and simply want to play the game, and want to play it with the wonderful features they have seen being offered by a mod in some youtube video they saw featuring that mod.
These people are likely pretty frustrated with the whole brand new (to them) modding procedures they are having to deal with by the time they actually find and post something here (or in another mod thread).
In any case; there will likely be a relatively long dark time between now and when people will have access to all of their favorite mods again under 1.3 or later, and quite a few actually are very (understandably) excited about having the in-game books they can write in and the various other features that have been added since 1.2.5.
I just cannot find it in me to be mad at people for that or to consider them "stupidly feature hungry"... I would even be happy to have my Mod updated for 12w17a, but can only do so if Risugami decides to give us all his time and efforts yet again for this. Something that I would not presume to expect or demand, but simply hope for. How will he even know that it would be worth his while to do something like this if someone like me doesn't post asking for it?
We don't consider ourselves "Risugami's handlers" or anything. We don't think we speak for him. We don't act like we speak for him. We merely give our on insights based on what we know ourselves. Just like you speculated Risu would update, Laijka and I speculate that he won't. I don't think even once we've said we know Risugami won't.
Fair enough, in and of itself and for me. Though many people new to this whole forum and mod thing likely do think you are since they don't see any responses that look more official.
And yes, MCP team updated for the snapshot. That's irrelevant.
I disagree. It's entirely relevant to my point. Perhaps it's irrelevant to your seemingly inferred tangential point regarding some imaginary pissing war between two separate modding community Legends (both of which are instrumental in complementary ways to much of the MC Modding community.).
MCP does NOT have a relationship with Risugami beyond the fact that many users use MCP and Modloader together and that Risugami no doubt assists in whatever necessary MCP decompile fixes for Modloader.
That's the relationship I was speaking of. Sounds like a good one to me.
Risugami doesn't use MCP. Risugami isn't dependent on MCP.
Again, irrelevant. This has nothing to do with what Risugami uses or is dependent on, and I never said anything to imply otherwise. I was merely announcing that MCP had updated for 17a and that it seemed one more point in favor of considering it a worthwhile version for ModLoader to update for, in my hopes that it would. Besides, whether or not Risugami uses or is dependent on MCP, probably 99% of modders who use ModLoader are... So there is an obvious relationship between the use of both ModLoader and MCP.
What both Risugami and MCP have been and are doing for the Minecraft Community is a service born of their talent and generosity, an incredible service, which has both shaped and enabled the entire Modding community for this internationally known and loved game. And much more, has allowed thousands if not millions to enjoy customized experiences with the "Minecraft Engine" that they never would have been able to otherwise.
* I personally can comprehend and appreciate the immensity of impact Risugami has had and continues to have on the entire "Minecraft Experience" for so very many people, including for me and my Mod.
Risugami; I sincerely hope that you still know how much everyone appreciates you and everything you have done. You have been here making Magic happen for us all for so long that the usual human factor starts to kick in and some people may start to take what you do for granted, just expecting your magic to continue on and on just like they expect the Skyscraper they work in to keep standing and shining in the sunlight.
I hope that you will take this all into account and not let it hinder the pleasure you are hopefully taking in the worldwide results of your creativity, talent and dedication to detail.
Q) Did you read the whole post before attempting to install modloader?
A) Yes (except the bits for Macs)
Windows:
1) Open up %appdata%, if you don't know how to do this, start>run, then type in %appdata%
2) Browse to .minecraft/bin
3) Open up minecraft.jar with WinRAR or 7zip.
4) Drag and drop the necessary files into the jar.
5) Delete the META-INF folder in the jar.
6) Run Minecraft, enjoy!
I did EXACTLY that on a clean install of Minecraft, and the game now crashes during loading. I cannot get the errors because the loader closes before anything more than a couple of words can be read. I deleted the bin folder and allowed Minecraft to run the update. Minecraft worked again. I attempted to reinstall modlader from the direct download location (thinking perhaps my archive was corrupt or maybe the Adfly version was not for version 1.2.5). I saved the zip to a different folder (so I could ensure I had a new fresh copy and not a cache of the one I knew did not work.). I followed the directions again. Same issue: crash during loading.
Does Modloader have any prerequisites that must be installed before it can be installed? Do I have to install a mod after installing modloader but before running minecraft so it has something to load?
Does Modloader have any prerequisites that must be installed before it can be installed? Do I have to install a mod after installing modloader but before running minecraft so it has something to load?
No, but since it sounds like you have a PC, you need to delete the "META-INF" folder in the "minecraft.jar" file.
You also need to make sure to only "Open" the "minecraft.jar" file for modification and not "Extract" then recompress it. I would recommend 7-zip for anything other than Macs. It's free and works great.
Either of those issues would cause the symptoms you have experienced. Good luck!

[EDIT]
You always want to install ModLoader first. It's a good idea to then run minecraft once then close it. After doing that you will have a "mods" folder in your ".minecraft" folder. Many ModLoader Mods can just have their .zip download dropped into that "mods folder. But not all of them, check each mods thread for specific instructions.

Yes, I have been a proud PC owner since ...umm...long time.
I followed the steps exactly, so the meta-inf folder was deleted.
I downloaded 7-Zip specifically for this task. I've used it in my own code, but never actually used the GUI. It seems pretty intuitive, but I'll make sure that dropping the files into the 7-Zip window does not actually extract and recompress. Worst case, can I repack the jar with a tool like Eclipse? I've never run into an issue where extracting and repacking caused issues, but then again I avoid using Java whenever possible.

Once installed I always use 7-zip via the Right-Click Context menu. Right-Click on the minecraft.jar file then select the 7-Zip sub-menu then the very top option "Open Archive".
Then once you have finished making changes within the 7-Zip Window you just close it's window (via the top-right-corner X) and you are done.
I have never yet been able to get a minecraft.jar that I've extracted then recompressed manually to work.
