Ahem, hello peoples, my name is slyster, and i like to make maps (mostly with mods). i'm currently working on a Super Mario World map, it's not done, of course, but i at least have Yoshi's Island done. If anyone knows how i can improve upon my map, let me know! The following gameplay mechanics will be:
1. In order to make sure a player can't just skip through the game, i have put barrier blocks to make a strict path. A fence will be used as another barrier, but this time, it can be bypassed. Just simply complete a level, and the fence will lower, providing a way to further your adventure!
2.Your savepoint should be saved in a level, preventing players from skiping levels. This means that players MUST complete the level in order to proceed.
3.Pipes are indeed included too! Either in the overworld, or in a level, a pipe is used to travel to another location, for secrets, or just pursuing onward. To "enter" a pipe, simply look down/up in the pipe, and press the button on it.
4.Secrets will be peppered throughout the course of your game, but how do you get to them? within a level, there might be a lever, used to open a iron door, preventing the player from getting to that secret goodness. whenever there's a iron door next to a level, there's a lever within the... level.
And that should be everything! Well, exept for the MAP, but you get the point here! i'll be uploading a demo for you guys to play, untill then, goodbye!

This sounds really good. Definitely continue working on it, and if the map's for the right version, you can even use the Super Mario mod to add extra immersion to the world. Definitely see if there's a side-scrolling mod too, for the perfect amount of authenticity.

I just took the Minecraft Noob test! Check out what I scored. Think you can beat me?!
Ahem, thank you, The_Last_Dovahkiin! First off, i'm currently using the 1.8.9 version, secound of all, i won't be using a side scrolling mod. I want it to be a 3D enviorment, but thanks for the advise! Here are some more pics!

Hate to say it, but that 1.8.9 MCreator version is quite bad in textures. I'd take up the torch for the old mod by jimboom, but Idk if he'd suddenly crawl out of the woodworks to yell copyright infringement or something.

Also, i'm using the Custom NPCs mod, to help with the enemies, yoshis, etc.
I understand you want to recreate the SMW map as close as possible, but I would still make more of it in Minecraft. 2D levels in a 3D game do not really fit well, so I would advice you to make the levels more 3D and thus improvise more about how the level would look like in 3D. You can use the game Super Mario 3D world as inspiration, because that is an excellent looking hybrid between 2D and 3D in her levels.
The map looks colorful and lively in SMW, because it is quite small and the grass is bright green. However, in Minecraft it looks quite barren and a little bit dull if the grass is not that vibrant. So I would place more mobs, plants, cool details and all that stuff in the map, of course inspired by the levels of SMW.
For example: some levels in SMW have a greenish background, as if you are in a forest, so you can plant or build some trees around that level in the world map. Again, you can use Super Mario 3D world as inspiration, because the world map there is also full of live and detail.
To make the grass more vibrant, you can do a few things. You can use a resource pack, you can use lime concrete or terracotta instead of grass, or you can change the biome of the SMW map into the mushroom island (or jungle, but for Mario the mushroom island is the only fitting of course) with MCEdit.
So my advice is: don't try to replicate the SMW too strict, because it will not really work out in Minecraft. Try to recreate the colorful and lively ambience of the game, in the world map and in the levels, make the levels more 3D, and thus use your imagination and Mario inspiration to let SMW really shine and sparkle in Minecraft.
Ahem, thank you for that advise! I have indeed tried to make it look like SMW, for example, i have implemented the same levels from within the game. And yes, i have also added backgrounds to my levels, and made my levels narrow-ish and long, to feel more like a SMW level. And, of course, my levels are not as flat as the SMB creations, i made it more wider, so the enemies won't knock you into a pit! Trust me, it won't be the best, but it won't be terrible either!
Ahem, ATTENTION! I have made my Super Mario World demo! It's in it's early stages, so expect some mishaps along the way! If you (somehow) get stuck in a pit, press the / button, and type" kill @p", or something like that! You MUST install Forge 1.8.9, and the Custom NPC's mod to get this to work in proper order
Ahem, Herb, i found it out! First off, if you haven't tried to extract the files, then do that...but if you have, then mabey you don't have winrar? And if you did both, then mabey it only works for windows? I have downloaded it AND extracted it with no flaws at all! It might just be your Computer...?
Also, after you extract the files, open the folder. You will see another folder with the same name ( i think ). Use that one instead of the one outside of it. That should help you. You also need Forge, plus Custom NPCs mod, here are the downloads for them,:
This is good stuff! I just played through the demo ( ALL of it; not just up until you placed the "End of Demo" guy. ) and it was quite satisfying. The levels were good and the overworld was organized well. I did have a problem with spawnpoints, though. If I died, I always spawned in Donut Plains 1, no matter where I was before. That should be simple to fix if you just set the spawnpoint with a command every time the player enters a level, but it wasn't too bad.
Stay tuned for the footage of my experience. It's about 40 minutes long and the upload speed at my house is not the best. It might pop up tomorrow; I'll notify you when it's ready.
Ahem, thank you, Stetofire, for that lovely Video you posted! It not only showed me that...you know, it WORKS, but it also showed me the many problems within the demo! I shall release a Remastered Demo, so you can enjoy it better! I also noticed you found 2 of the secrets in Donut Plains, one of which you didn't think one could get there! There is a bush you can use to jump onto the pipe, kill the enemy guarding it, and use the lever to open up a secret! At the time of this comment, i'm currently on work on Vanilla Dome, so most of Donut Plains is complete, all but the pipes, and Donut Secret 2.
Furthermore, I also noticed that the music isn't playing for some reason...i find that rather strange...The "steves" you found walking with you are in fact the ones that play the music, they also were supposed to be invisible, but i already fixed that! if you can get the music to play, let me know!
And no, i'm not a fake account, i'm the real deal, i'm just in school at the current time of this comment! See ya!

Here's a video on how to upload the download to minecraft!
Ahem...hmm, i see. I'll try to see what's wrong. In the meantime, just wait....

looks primising makes me remember when i made my SMW hacks
Ahem...guys, i'm having a problem here...my spawnpoints won't save, so i could easily bypass my own levels... can someone help meh?Ahem, herb, you NEED winrar to extract my super mario world map, you know, to play it. I know of a free version to download, so here's the link:
http://download.cnet.com/WinRAR-64-bit/3000-2250_4-10965579.html
Also, after you extract the files, open the folder. You will see another folder with the same name ( i think ). Use that one instead of the one outside of it. That should help you. You also need Forge, plus Custom NPCs mod, here are the downloads for them,:
forge: https://files.minecraftforge.net/ ( make sure you get the 1.8 version! )
custom NPCs mod: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/minecraft-mods/1278956-custom-npcs
Ahem, well, is there any program that can extract certain files?
Ahem, will 7-Zip work for linux? If it does, i can convert it to a 7-Zip thing!
Ahem, the time has finally come! I just finished the overworld for Vanilla Dome!
Here are some pics!
Why so dark
Nothing can go here but time itself.
