About a month back I started work on a massive project, probably way too much work for one person to do, and I'm starting to lose motivation. That's why I'm creating this thread, I figure that I'll be more motivated to work on it if I have somewhere to post updates on my progress.
You're probably more interested in the map itself though so I'll get right into it. The world itself is a map a I made in worldpainter after a few weeks of on and off work getting it exactly the way I wanted. The total size of the island is 2048x1536 blocks, here's an image exported from worldpainter.
There's going to be two smaller towns and a large city as well as various temples and ruins scattered about, they're all very fantasy-medieval sort of style.
Fairgrove (Town 1) 100% Complete
The first town I started working on is placed at the couple of roads that jut off the main one just to the left of the long mountain range in the exported worldpainter image. It's mainly a farming village but there is also a coal mine in the mountain.
Here's a slew of pictures of the town, starting with the town hall of course.
Next up we have the bakery, just to the right of the town hall.
Then on the other side of the square, there's the apothecary.
To the right of that is a small barrack with a training area and a forge, as well as a watch tower
Next up is one of the farmhouses, just down the road from the square. You can see the back of the apothecary on the left.
Here's another farmhouse a bit to the left of the other one, behind the barracks.
Next is the windmill you can sort of see in the barracks image.
On the other side of town there's a graveyard and a small shrine to the local deity.
Here's a photo of some of the unfinished houses(which are now finished, see update 1) in front of the graveyard as well as some watchtowers.
Back onto the other side of town, behind the town hall there's a few more unfinished homes(which are now done, see update 1) and where the mine is going to enter the mountain(which it now does, see update 1). You can see some of the farms on the left.
Here's just another picture of the fields.
Finally an overview of the village from the mountain.
Mosspoint (Town 2) 100% Complete
This town is now also finished, it's along the coast just to the left of the swamp. It's mainly be a fishing village, it is much smaller than Fairgrove. Here's an image of where it is, roughly, highlighted in red.
Here's a short tour of the town.
Pretty much as soon I finished Fairgrove I moved on to this other town and after two days I've finished it. As i said it would be, this town is much smaller than Fairgrove, there's only ten buildings in total; 6 houses, 2 fisheries, a supply shop, and a warehouse.
With the houses I went with a bit of a different design than I used in Fairgrove. The roofs are quite a bit shallower and overall the look a little bit more beat up and worn down by the wind and the storms from the ocean. They also tend to bit smaller than the houses in Fairgrove. The houses are split into small footprint two story homes and slightly larger one floor designs.
Here's one of the two story homes, I replaced some of the blocks in the walls with stairs and roughed up the roof a bit to make it look a lot more worn down and falling apart.
Downstairs shot, pretty cramped. There are shelves all over the walls to maximize storage space as well as break up the walls a little bit, in that alcoveon the far end of the house is a furnace with a chimney out the roof.
Upstairs is equally cramped, just slightly different furnishings.
This is the exterior of one of the single floor homes, the exterior is equally beat up as the two story homes, you can also see just how shallow the roof is; it's only one block higher than the walls at it's highest point.
The kitchen, it pretty much takes up this whole half of the house.
The other half of the house with the bed and a desk as well as some bookshelves.
I'm not sure why I don't have an exterior shot of the supply store but here's an interior shot, it looks pretty much the same as the single floor homes anyway. It's named the Seaside Supply.
Fishery exterior.
Fishery interior, lots of storage and tables for preparing fish. I thought the iron bars hanging from the ceiling looked a bit like hooks that they could hang prepared fish from to dry, I'm not sure if this was actually ever done but I thought it looked interesting so I think I'll leave them there.
Another fishery exterior.
Another fishery interior.
Warehouse exterior and dock. This would be the dock they use to send off cargo boats carrying fish to the city and unload supplies from cargo ships returning from the city.
Warehouse interior.
Finally a shot of the fishing boats with nets made of cobwebs off the sides of them.
Portmont (Main City) 50% Complete
This city is going to be the real heart of the island, the villages bring in supplies; fish from the fishing village and crops and ores from Fairgrove. It will also have most of the island's industry and craftsmen along with some magical element; a tower or college or something.
Here's an image of where it'll be, roughly of course.
WOW it's taken a long time to get to 50% but I think I can finally say that, most of the houses have no interiors yet but the main features are all but complete. This is the trading hub for the region so there are a lot of markets and an expansive harbour, as it is also the main link to the outside world. This is an overview shot of what is looks like so far.
Have a look through some of the recent updates for a bit more detail.
Ruins etc. 0% Complete
There's also going to be a bunch of temples and ruins and dungeons and things like that scattered around the map. I can tie them into the main story or side quests when I get to that point.
After the build is done, which might take a while considering how much I have to do, I can start on the story. So far I'm thinking it will either be that you have been contracted by the king to collect the pieces of an ancient artifact for him or you have a vision that the world will be destroyed unless you can collect all the pieces of an artifact and use it to save the world.
Hopefully there will fairly regular updates here as I work through everything I have to do on this map.
Awesome! I'm doing the same thing - an impossibly large map that I post about to keep me motivated. Hope that works out for you. Will you be releasing builds as you go or are you waiting until you have a more complete build?
Your post is pretty much the reason why I decided to do this. I was reading it earlier and I thought, hey I have a map that I'll probably never get done unless I find some way to stay motivated, maybe I should try this. I probably won't be releasing frequent builds, I might release a build occasionally though. Not sure yet.
Fairgrove is now completely finished and I'm really happy with the way it turned out. Over the past few days I've been really motivated to work on this map so I finished up the houses I had left to finish and the mine. I also added a few decorations around the town, which I think really bring it to life. Here's a couple of pictures of what I've done, I'll also update the OP.
Pictures
An overview of some of the houses, they don't look a lot different from up here but I have finished the interiors to all of them.
An image of one of the kitchens, I didn't take more interior screenshots because they all use the same sort of style with minor changes to things like the floor color, layout, plants, whether or not they have lots of bookshelves and a few other minor things like that.
A shot of the new well in the town center.
One of the lampposts I scattered around the town.
I decided to only do two houses over here, it was too crowded for my liking. You can also see the mine in the top center.
Finally another shot of the mine, I ended up going with coal for this mine.
Next up I think I'm going to start work on the seaside town. I'm still not sure what i want to call it so any name suggestions would be great. In fact there are a couple things that i could use name suggestions on, the bakery and the apothecary need names and so does the city.
The village by the ocean, which I've decided to call Mosspoint, is already finished. Pretty much as soon I finished Fairgrove I moved on to this other town and after two days I've finished it. As i said it would be, this town is much smaller than Fairgrove, there's only ten buildings in total; 6 houses, 2 fisheries, a supply shop, and a warehouse.

Finally a shot of the fishing boats with nets made of cobwebs off the sides of them. Next up I guess I should start working on the city, this will definitely take me longer so there will probably be a few updates as it progresses. Thanks for reading and I'm still looking for a name for the city and names for the bakery and apothecary in Fairgrove.
When I was planning out the city i made sure to minimize the amount of walls there would need to be, one side is covered by the mountain and the opposite side is covered by the ocean so there was only two wall segments I had to do. I made sure I didn't have to do a lot of walls because I don't really like building walls as they are usually so repetitive. I also used worldedit pretty heavily to repeat the pattern along the length of the wall, again to minimize the amount of it I had to do by hand.
Pictures
Here is the finished product, I think the design I went with has just the right amount of detail so that it's not boring but it also doesn't look too repetitive. The black parts are coal blocks while the white parts are the new bone blocks. I tried quartz in it's place but it seemed too bright white to me, the bone blocks are a little bit more subdued and I think they fit really well. The gates are pretty simple, just an arch between two towers with a walkway on top and a portcullis coming down from the bottom. Next up I think I'm either going to do the port or the castle, then I'll move on to some other larger buildings in the city before working on houses and shops.
Man, you are a great builder! I wish I could help in some way.
Thanks! I'm looking for a name for the city as well as names for the bakery and apothecary in Fairgrove if you wanted to help with ideas. Also I'll probably be needing some ideas of what buildings to build in the city.
It's been a while since I posted an update on the progress I've been making, mostly because I haven't done a lot, I've been working exclusively on the castle in the city on and off for a while. There has been a lot of progress there though, I'd say I'm about halfway done; all I have left to do is the treasury, the dining hall and some living spaces. It's turning out looking a lot more sinister than I originally planned but I'm just going with it.
Pictures!
An overview of the exterior as it currently stands, it will look much different when I'm done right now I've bee mostly focusing on the work inside the mountain. The design on the outside looks pretty similar to the design of the walls, not exactly the same but they at least look like they match.
A closer look at the front of the main tower, I tried to blend it into the mountain as best as possible so it doesn't look weird.
On top of the tower there are some plans for future living spaces and towers as well as what is supposed to be a ballista, it's not my design but I thought it looked pretty good so I decided to scatter a few of them around. I'll probably put more up when I build more towers up the mountain.
A side view of the stairs up to the entrance, pretty basic I added some braziers to add some light. I'm pretty sure that the main town center is going to be at the bottom of the stairs, I'm not sure what I'll put there yet but it will at least be some kind of main square.
The view at the entrance, another ballista off to the left and some places for archers to shoot down the stairs from. You can go up those towers but all that's inside is a ladder and a few torches.
The view as you enter the entrance hall, with another ballista (and yes I know that makes no sense because they were really not short range weapons but I thought it looked cool) at the back and some more places for archers to shoot from I'd say this entrance is fairly well defended. The doors into the rest of the fortress are to the left and right of that defense area, since you can't see them from the entrance I might have to add some carpet of something to lead people.
This is the hallway that you come into through the entrance hall, you enter through the arch on the right or the on at the other end of the hall. The door in the middle on the left goes to another hallway and there is a door behind me (to the left of the entrance hall) that goes to another hallway
This is the hallway to the left of the entrance hall, right now it's really unfinished but it'll look like the other hallways later. The door on the left is where you come in from the previous hallway and the large door goes into the throne room. It ended up being a lot more sinister than I was going for but ah well, maybe I can use it as a bit of foreshadowing for the story, or maybe not; I haven't put much thought into the story yet so I don't know yet.
This is the view from the entrance, personally I think it looks downright evil in here but maybe that's just me.
An aerial shot over the entrance, that platform is where you come in an then you have to walk down one of the staircases to get to the throne.
The view from the bottom of the the stairs, that staue over there took quite a while to get right. I ended up looking at a tonne of other statues to figure out how it should look.
A better view of one of the statues, there's one on either side of the throne.
A shot of the throne itself, pretty evil looking in my opinion.
Finally the view from the throne.
Remember the door in the middle of the first hallway, it goes to this hallway. The door on the left that you can't quite see obviously goes to the barrack for the palace guard, the staircase on the right goes up to the dining hall and the kitchen and at the very end of the hall on the left there is a staircase up to another unfinished hallway with nothing off of it yet.
Inside the barrack on the first floor there are some training grounds and some storage.
On the second floor there's really only beds and a bit of storage, but there's also a door (behind me in this shot) that goes to the bridge over the first hallway.
This goes to the balcony thing overlooking the entrance hall, it's just a bunch more arrow slits for defended the entrance.
The view from one of the arrow slits.
Up the stairs on the right of the hallway is the dining hall which is incredibly unfinished right now. The only reason those designs are on the wall is because this is inside the main tower. The hallway you can see on the right just leads back to another exit from the entrance hall.
So there's still quite a bit of work to do on the castle but I figured I should update my progress since it's been a while.
Again, it's been a little while. This isn't really even going to be a full update either, that will be coming soon just not quite yet. Work has been coming along, albeit slowly, but in this post I wanted to talk a little bit more about how the story is coming along, if anyone still cares. This might be less for your enjoyment as it is for me to just get some ideas out there, I still hope you enjoy though.
Recently in my English class we finished reading Oedipus Rex, if you're unfamiliar with it that's fine, all that's relevant to this post is that Oedipus is a great character. He is a man who generally tries to do the right thing, he is driven by his pride and sometimes blinded by it but he is really just trying to get through life honourably. My English teacher described him as a man between the extremes of good and evil. Unfortunately fate has other things in mind for him and ultimately he ends up suffering greatly in the end. I've been thinking a lot about Oedipus as I had to write an essay about his pride but it also caused me to think a lot about what kind of character I want you to fill the role of in my map. I want him to be a well developed character, someone the player can really feel for. The story is really the most important part of a story driven map like this and without strong characters the story has no impact. I want the story to be organic, and I know that's asking a lot of myself and minecraft even but I want it to be the player's story as much as it is the main character's story.
Also just earlier today I was listening to the truth podcast, which is basically a podcast for short stories(all really good), and I was listening to one of their older stories "That's Democracy" (which you should really listen to, it's great http://www.thetruthpodcast.com/story/2016/7/13/the-making-of-thats-democracy) because they had a newer episode discussing a short film someone recently made based on it. Pretty much it explores some of the really tough decisions elected officials have to make on behalf of others, and that's another thing I want to embody in the main character. I want there to be some really tough decisions in the map so that each player's experience is entirely different and unique to them and so that everyone can take something different away from it when they finish it. I think I can also really use the idea that the main character never meant to be a hero, he was just thrown into the role and told that he is the only one who can save the world, to shape him and the story around him.
All this really adds to the complexity of the map, but I think it will really push the map to a whole new level so I will be somehow adding these ideas to the story. Anyway, thanks for reading and it would be great to know what you think about all this, it's still an idea in its infancy so input is always appreciated.
Thanks! There will probably be a lot of command blocks, I've got some mechanics in mind I want to add with them, I think they really add to the experience. I don't think I'm going to worry about mods to keep the installation process as simple as possible for anyone who wants to play.
In my last mini update I promised a full update would be coming, so here it is! Mostly I just wanted to finish the castle before I posted an update on my progress, major milestones are always a good time to update. A lot has changed since the last update, so I might as well get right to the pictures.
Pictures:
This is going to be a long one... I'll try and get through it quickly
let's start with an exterior shot, it doesn't look a lot different, there's just a bunch more stuff on top of the tower now.
Speaking of the tower, this is what the inside now looks like. In case you didn't notice its a grand dining room. Also that hallway off to the right of the first picture is now finished.
Nothing real special. Back in the main hallway, there is now a staircase up to another level, there are three hallways stacked on top of each other here.
The staircases on the left side lead to balconies overlooking the dining hall. On the right side of this hallway there is a small chapel and another staircase up.
I figure that there should be someplace that the royal family could go to pray to their gods without making a big deal about it.
Up on the next floor there are more balconies and this staircase:
It goes up to this room:
This is the entrance to the main living quarters,on top of the tower.
Hallway you can see from the last shot. On the left is the ballroom, the right is some other living quarters and upstairs are personal rooms/
The ballroom, pretty fancy, good place to hold parties.
Sitting room.
Another sitting room.
An office. Or study if you want to be fancy.
Art gallery.
Up the stairs back in the hallway are some guest rooms, nothing too fancy.
There is also this staircase room. The one on the right goes up to the royal family's level and the one on the left goes up to the library tower.
This is a common room on the royal family's floor, off of this room are four bedrooms, three children's rooms and the king's room.
The first of the children's rooms, there is also some kind of balcony or outdoor space on all of these bedrooms.
The second child's room.
The third room is inside a tower, the furniture is spread out across multiple floors. This room also has the best view from the top of the tower, a mostly unobstructed 360 degree view. The render distance doesn't really do it justice but here's my best attempt, I'm sure you get the idea.
Don't worry about the floating building, I'm just trying out a design. You can also see from up here I've been doing a bit of planning down in the city.
The king's bedroom is quite spacious, there really isn't a great view though, sadly. That's it for the living space, going up the other staircase in the staircase room leads you here:
It's that tall tower at the back with the big roof.
There's a balcony out on top of the king's bedroom from a few floors up the tower.
And at the top there's a study/reading room. The windows bring in most of the light up here, they would have a great unobstructed view out across the ocean but that doesn't really come through in minecraft, again due to render distance.
Now we're going to take a little detour back down to the dining hall, more importantly this door, it goes into the kitchen and servants quarters.
Where you come in from the dining hall is mainly just a storage area, the main kitchen is behind me.
It's mainly just a large oven in the middle with prep areas around along the walls.
Behind the oven is a passage into the servants area
This is the main storage area for the castle, it's actually right around the corner of the throne room, that's why it's L shaped.
Down the side there is a slow sloping staircase that goes right to ground level so that the servants can easily bring in supplies without disturbing the main entrance.
Off the side of the storage room, there is a small work room where all the laundry would be done and possibly some stitch work.
There is also a staircase in the storage room that leads up to a smaller kitchen area for the servants to prepare themselves food. The door on the left leads to this room:
It's just a sleeping area for the servants, with personal storage around.
There is also this staircase which leads to this corridor:
It leads to a couple of passageways so that the servants can get around the castle without being seen.
The first door off that corridor leads back into this hallway, as a convenience.
The passageway also leads up alongside the main staircase to the living areas.
At the top of those stairs is a small preparation room.
Around one corner is an exit to the ballroom.
Around the other corner is this passage.
It exits into the art gallery.
It also leads up to this weird passage.
Which leads back out to this staircase room, for easy access to the royal bedrooms.
If you made it this far then we can talk about this new doorway at the bottom of the stairs in the throne room.
It leads to some more stairs, seems to be a common theme in this castle.
It then opens up into the treasury, there is this large hourglass in the middle and it is flanked by mounds of gold. This will be a major plot point in the story, but I think I'll keep that to myself at least until that idea is a little better developed.
Mounds of gold and more hourglass imagery, I really like how the pillars turned out, they look great.
I guess it's not completely finished, this hallway outside the throne room is still unfinished but that's because this hallway is going to link up with the city guard headquarters but I haven't got around to that yet. I should be able to move on to the actual city now, that should be pretty interesting. It's still going to be quite a while before this city is done.

Very nice! The builds look very good! Although I find alot of adventure maps have a kind of medieval/fantasy theme. As long as the story is different and interesting though, it'll turn out great.
Maybe I should do a build log of my map?

Update 2: Mosspoint Finished
The village by the ocean, which I've decided to call Mosspoint, is already finished. Pretty much as soon I finished Fairgrove I moved on to this other town and after two days I've finished it. As i said it would be, this town is much smaller than Fairgrove, there's only ten buildings in total; 6 houses, 2 fisheries, a supply shop, and a warehouse.
More Pictures
With the houses I went with a bit of a different design than I used in Fairgrove. The roofs are quite a bit shallower and overall the look a little bit more beat up and worn down by the wind and the storms from the ocean. They also tend to bit smaller than the houses in Fairgrove. The houses are split into small footprint two story homes and slightly larger one floor designs.
Here's one of the two story homes, I replaced some of the blocks in the walls with stairs and roughed up the roof a bit to make it look a lot more worn down and falling apart.
Downstairs shot, pretty cramped. There are shelves all over the walls to maximize storage space as well as break up the walls a little bit, in that alcove on the far end of the house is a furnace with a chimney out the roof.
I'm not sure why I don't have an exterior shot of the supply store but here's an interior shot, it looks just like one of the one story houses on the outside. It's name is the Seaside Supply
Next up I guess I should start working on the city, this will definitely take me longer so there will probably be a few updates as it progresses. Thanks for reading and I'm still looking for a name for the city and names for the bakery and apothecary in Fairgrove.
Oh no, the pictures in your latest post aren't showing for me... The stuff from Fairgrove looks really nice though.
That's odd, I'll try re uploading them. And thanks!
EDIT: I think I might have deleted the album on imgur after I posted the pictures, clearly I shouldn't have done that.
Update 3: City Walls
Update 4: Castle Progress
Looks nice. Don't stop. Will you use Command Blocks or mods?
Thanks! There will probably be a lot of command blocks, I've got some mechanics in mind I want to add with them, I think they really add to the experience. I don't think I'm going to worry about mods to keep the installation process as simple as possible for anyone who wants to play.
That's good. Most people don't want to figure out Forge just to play a map.
Update 5: Castle Finished
Your building is truly amazing, the castle especially. Following this thread so I can keep an eye on the project.
Thanks! Clearly my shameless plug worked out.
Looks great, Do you have or know any of the storyline yet? Can't wait to see the finished product.
I have nothing here, go look somewhere else.
Very nice! The builds look very good! Although I find alot of adventure maps have a kind of medieval/fantasy theme. As long as the story is different and interesting though, it'll turn out great.
Maybe I should do a build log of my map?
