I've been working really hard on a new skyblock challenge map with some unique and fun twists to what's been done. Here's a breakdown of the story and the status which I will update as progress continues. Your feedback will help the map to become that much better and I'm always looking for volunteers to help test the map out once it's in a playable state.
THE STORY
You knew it would come. You just didn't know when or how, but this is it. The world, and everything you've ever known is gone. No one knows exactly how it happened but scientists discovered an entity that seemed to consume worlds as it traveled, and it's hunger seemed endless. They would call it "The Beast" for lack of a better term since they were never really able to identify it. They watched it progress across the sky and head towards our home. It didn't matter what we threw at it - it just kept coming.
I woke up on what appears to be a small piece of land floating in an endless nothing, with little more than a tree for company. I've been in worse situations - there was that one time I was in hell. No really - they called it the nether but there I was on a single piece of ground surrounded by lava. I ended up using my hair to...well it doesn't matter. I managed to survive that so I can survive this. Perhaps if I attempt to feed this creature it will spare me long enough for me to make my escape.
There's also a space faring civilization of merchants that travels around and our scientists were trading technologies with them before the collapse. Perhaps they are still out there and, if I can prove to be a worthwhile rescue perhaps they'll give me a lift and a start at a new life.
Do I feed the beast or do I take my chances with the merchants? One thing's for sure it won't be easy escaping this situation.
PROGRESS
Progress is progressing well with the map itself. The player will have two choices of a path they can take, and each one will contain hundreds of quests and tasks. If I can find a modder who can help me make a custom mod that will take care of events, then there could also be some very interesting challenges imposed on the player depending on the mood of either faction.
Challenge modes will exist so that multiple players can work to complete tasks before the other in the hope of getting rescued first or in the case of the beast, overwhelming the other. I've got some great ideas for this, but again it will evolve around an event system that doesn't currently exist yet. If I can't find a modder I'll end up making it myself but it will take some time.
Update: I've decided to make the mod required for this myself. I know there are modders out there that could do this quickly and easily but I would never have as much control over it as I would like. Java isn't my favorite language but at least I'm fluent enough.
What I'd really like to do is require the player to escape with the help of the merchants by completing a series of tasks all the while keeping the beast satiated. The hunger of the beast could increase, faster and faster as the game goes on requiring more and more or greater value items to keep it from getting hungry, and as it does get hungry, perhaps events start occuring such as eternal night, blood moons, hunger, random poison effects, etc depending on how hungry the beast gets (Based on a faction level so it can be viewed in HQM perhaps?) - this would force the player to attempt to keep the beast from getting too hungry all the while trying to earn their way away from the beast.

Let me know what you all think!
