1. The project is on hiatus until further notice. Technically, it has been since winter of 2013, due to University, work and general life stuff that has taken place since then - on top of having lost interest in the game for the time being due to playing too much. Whenever I pick things back up again, I will update this topic. Until then... the rest of the community will create plenty of great maps in my absence, so it's not a big loss at all! - Darko
Welcome to the home thread of Project TMM - the code name of a custom map named "The Mapmaker"! This adventure has been in the making ever since September 2012, and will continue to develop further as time goes on. What sort of map is it? Here's a simple rundown.
You play the role of a young man, known as the mapmaker. He wants to create the greatest Minecraft maps possible, but lacks creativity and talent. Therefore, he decides the best way for him to publish great maps... is to steal them!
Pretty easy, right?
As the mapmaker, you will embark on a journey through the Internet, and into the Minecraft forums, where you will discover numerous maps to steal for your scrupulous desires. To do so, however, you must bypass the map creator's network, delve into their map and complete it yourself, to steal the map's data. It may indeed seem pretty easy, but it will certainly be a dangerous quest.
How many maps will there be in the forums? The general goal is to have around 10 little maps. These won't be large maps to upload on their own, however.
The initial goal was to have ten large maps, each lasting at least 2 hours, but I decided to change the plan for a few reason. First up, it'd take way too much time - a few years, to be exact. After all, I'm now in university, so I can't dedicate all my time to mapmaking. Who knows if I'll even want to play Minecraft in a few years? Second, there's the length of the final project - not a lot of people want to play a map that lasts over 20 hours, not even me. Third, making ten maps into a single one is a little overkill, when I could simply post them separately and see which ones are appreciated the most that way... which is close to what will actually happen.
The Mystery of the Pumpkin Castle was the first map made for this project that was released. The Prince of Paranoia, sequel/prequel to Monarch of Madness, will be the next. After that... everything else done so far for the Mapmaker will be its own map, but it will most likely last around 2-3 hours instead of the initial 20. Makes sense? Makes sense.
Another reason for all this is the addition of resource packs. Do you know how much bigger they get when you replace sound files? And do you know how many sound files I'll have to modify for the in-game voice-acting? Lots and lots, for sure. If all of this was a single map... there would just be no space for all of the custom sounds in a single resource pack, and I'm not willing to force players to change resource packs ten times throughout their playthrough.
Explanation over! Direct all your questions and comments to this thread!
Note: All screenshots are subject to change. None of them are truly final unless stated otherwise. Final product may change. Final product may also contain traces of nuts and razor blades.
That's all there is to know for now! The project is only around 20% done (and that's being generous), so don't expect it to be finished too quickly... That said, stick around and chat if you want! If you have questions regarding the Project, speak up!
Update November 18th 2012: Added a new screenshot!
Update December 9th 2012: Added yet another new screenshot!
Update January 1st 2013: Added two new screenshots! The first is something entirely new, and the second is November's screenshot, made better!
Update February 7th 2013: Added a bunch of new screenshots, most of which are updated ones with SMP's Revival, the map's official texture pack at the moment! Some of them showcase areas that have changed, and others detail a few things you couldn't see before. Better appreciate these, because the map is now at a stage where screenshots will become few and far between!
Update February 16th 2013: Added one new screenshot, for a new area!
Update March 4th 2013: Added a new screenshot of the very first boss battle, and updated every screenshot! I had to move everything from Photobucket to Imgur due to bandwidth issues, so some screenshots were left behind if I deemed them unnecessary I hope that clears everything up!
Update March 12th 2013: Released the first teaser trailer! Enjoy!
Update April 22nd: The map is still in full motion! Added a screenshot of of one of the map's new areas - a familiar setting.
Update May 6th: Added a new screenshot of one of the map's numerous maps!
Update August 18th: Changed some information and details - change of plans!
Already looking good! Looking forward for the map. Can't wait to play.
Looking forward to keep on building it myself! Can you believe that Revolve hasn't even added his work to the mix yet? All that has been done so far is solely my work! (Of course, that'll change and should help things move along.)
I loved Monarch of Madness!
Can't wait for this to be out. It already looks and sounds fun!
First post ftw. lolwhat.
...Yay for laziness >_>!
It'll be out in a little while, but I'll keep the thread updated as I go along! Stick around and check back every two weeks or so to see if I have added more screenshots!
Please make bosses (Like in Herobrine's Mansion). I am getting psyched by the future of adventure maps and can't wait for more maps like that one to come.

Yes, that's indeed a great map. Played it by myself two days ago, and it was amazingly fun! I am planning at least one boss fight that uses solely redstone and mechanisms, but I might try to do some like HM's using stronger mobs. That said, the way the map will work, I'll have only a few areas in which such boss battles will work... But I'll try nonetheless.
Say, I still haven't gotten how the mobs remained still until disturbed. Were they placed with MCEdit?
I have been working on the map on and off (using the off time to test other maps, do school work and play Sticker Star), but things are progressing! I'd say the map is now around 10% complete, so a 5% gain over the last landmark. I have added this new screenshot to the post, but what could it be, and where will it hide?
That said, this isn't all that has been worked on. I'm purposely avoiding the other area in which I've put work, simply because it contains heavy spoilers. This one only shows an optional area that will barely provide around ten minutes of fun, so no big spoilers here!
Feel free to leave thoughts, comments and speculation!
Well, can't wait to give this a shot Looks lovely thus far!
And it's both lovely to make and play! It will be quite demanding in some later parts, though, especially when I'll have to try (or rather, struggle) to make a texture pack accordingly, wire the redstone in a compact manner, terraform, juggle between filters and host quite a few adventures at once. That said, nothing is ever easy, and a challenge will only help me get better!
This looks amazing so far! I wonder if you recommend any texture packs as well to make it look even more amazing!
The texture pack will either be made from scratch, or I'll try to find someone willing to let me slightly edit their already-wonderful pack. All I really need is a few texture changes here and there, though changing the entire look would also be lovely.

Yes they are placed in MCEdit using one of three filters from Sethbling. My preferred two filters are the one where you turn chests into mobs and the one where you can just plain create them in MCEdit. You should seriously search up Sethbling if you haven't, he has some pretty cool MCEdit filters that makes mapmaking so much easier.
Good luck and I hope your map is amazing!

"Map making isn't about painting a canvas, it's more like creating a giant block and carving a statue out of it."

Oh, I know Sethbling and his filters very well, including the "create geared mobs" one! The one I was wondering about was how the mobs remained still without moving. Since then, though, I did find another filter from someone else that does just that, so it's all good.

If you ever need any redstone help, especially in compact terms, I've gotten especially good at making it over the past few months. Just throwing that out there, though you're pretty excellent at it, last I recall!

Define "excellent"? I might indeed need some help with that, and I might have to study some Boss Battles from other maps to know what's the best way to go about making one.

Well, Monarch of Madness has some pretty lovely redstone stuff in it, last I recall
I'm working on studying some of the boss battles myself, as I'd love to do some prototypes of those at some point. I've really started getting into advanced redstone stuff, and am finding it quite rewarding.

Oh, decent redstone perhaps, but nothing too fancy either And admittedly, I haven't looked all that much into the behind-the-scenes of Boss Battles, mostly because the amount of wires scares me. Do you know of any good redstone tutorial series that start from the basic and go into the complex? I might have to watch one of those.

Also, You're maps are awesome
Thanks! I need to get people excited for it, otherwise it might come out without any warning and I'd rather not do it that way
