I've recently started working on making a mod called Mapmaker's Assistant, which hopes to make life easier for mapmakers by adding a simple, ingame interface for tasks such as making custom item strings, mob spawners, etc. Since I am not a mapmaker myself (or at least not a very good one), I would like to hear from people who have experience in the field on what features to include. You can suggest anything, but bear in mind that if it's too difficult to code or too obscure in usage, it probably won't make the final version.
Please note: The mod will be made using Forge, at least initially. Sorry to those of you who have problems with it, but it's all I know how to use. Once the main features are complete, I may look into porting it to other APIs.
Here is the list of planned/suggested features so far:
Items
Item names and lore with font colors and styles. Finished!
Forced stack sizes (for non-stackable things like potions and tools). Finished!
Enchantment editor. Finished!
Attribute editor. (Attributes are stat buffs/debuffs you get while holding an item or wearing it as armor.) Mostly finished.
Potion editor.
Book formatting editor.
Spawners
Custom mobs with gear, loot, potion effects, etc.
Spawn potential. (Chance to spawn different mobs from the same spawner).
Stacked mobs.
Detection radius, spawn rate, etc.
Other
Command blocks are now in the creative menu under "Decorations." Finished!
Save favorite item, mob, spawner, etc. settings to a file for later use. In progress...
Sign and book formatting with font styles and colors.
Villager trade editor.
Infinite mining/placing reach option.
Note: The mod will not include MCEdit-style mass block-editing, so don't suggest it. There are already plenty of mods that do this, and I don't believe it's worth spending the time to create another one.
Screenshots
Here are some screenshots of my progress so far.
Basic Editor - Editing of item name and forcing stack sizes for things that aren't normally stackable.
Lore Editor - Adds lines of custom text to the item's tooltip. These can be formatted in the same way as the item name.
Enchantment Editor - Allows application of any enchantment to any item. Levels range from 0 to 255, a hard-coded limit set in vanilla Minecraft.
Attribute Editor - Allows the addition of attributes to items. The four currently available are max health, attack damage, movement speed, and knockback resistance. They can add either a flat bonus or a percentage of the existing amount.
Update: I have finished the enchantment and attribute systems. I'm going to make the favorite saving/loading for items, then possibly send a closed alpha version to experienced mapmakers for testing. I don't intend for this thread to become a development blog, but I thought I should let everyone know.
I am still looking for feature suggestions if anyone has them, because once again I do not make maps on a professional level and so I don't know what a mapmaker would want in this mod.

This is really neat! Will it be available as a bukkit plugin? Voxelsniper is what I make my maps in, and switching around is a bit annoying.

There ain't much left of the world these days. The gods have forsaken us, there's no denying that. But still you press on. For what? A chance to sift through the ashes one last time? The hope to one day be called a hero? Whatever your reason, you've got a lot of work to do. The corruption won't leave without a fight, so you better get started.
If someone hasn't already suggested this, a command block text editor? Make the text bold and colorful? I use NBTEdit for this, but if you add that, this mod will be much easier.

You can do this already. Renaming a command block with font effects/colors will cause its text to have the same font.

An editor that changes an author of a book, villager trades, and something that creates floating blocks like sand and water. Basically things that are in map maker programs, just making them more convenient with a mod.

Agreed. Changing the author of a book was something I always needed in making my adventure maps.
I am like @Cosokin, a "soon-to-be" mapmaker. I've made a few but they aren't famous. Anyway, I agree with his first one. Command blocks support italics, underline, strike through, bold, and color. You should add that to the mod.
And his second one, if possible. However it seems more likely that anyone playing a map would require a map for that. But the third one is rather impossible, to only change the texture of one block. It would change every block with that ID.
Lastly, I would be interested in testing this mod out. I won't be available until Monday, however.
When can I download! As a map maker, this is right up there with in-game NBTEdit and MCedit! If I could make a suggestion, it would be to add some kind of color editor for armor (you can dye leather armor, so I assume it would be possible to make it more vibrant, or differently colored) and an easy way to edit mobs, like make them persistent, give them gear, change their drop chances, etc.
Those of you asking for command block whatever's. This is already possible through MCEdit. Go sift through Sethbling's MCEdit filters and find the ColorCommandBlockText filter. Stop bugging him about that, please.
Secondly, @Cososkin I know for a fact that that second one is not possible without external 3rd party modifications to the world (I.e MCEdit).

That is all.

I do agree with you, however the whole point of this nod is to build your maps in-game and not have to use third party editors like MCEdit.
Have you saw the filter Sethbling made where he made command block make players teleport to a sign? Or something like that? (I'd like to post a link to his video but unfortunately I'm in a mobile device)

I'm currently writing it in Forge, but I may be able to port it once the core features are done.
