Hey all. What's up? I just got some new hours at work, and I'm feeling good for a stream, so who's with me? Sadly, I can't do tomorrow or Monday-that's when there are new hours, but I can do Tuesday! So, let's get started today! I expect Dylan will get to me at some point today...
For the moment, I will play last week's winner on the Strawpoll, some more Simulation Protocol 2: Overload.
Hope to see you there!
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Hey there all. I stream CTMs as well as other indiegames, RPGs and more. Check me out: www.twitch.tv/aurabolt
I stream too, its just I don't have that big of an audience for me to feel like I should schedule things consistently. I will, however, if you guys want me to! Just let me know. If you want to know my twitch, just PM me because I feel like it is spam sitting in this post here.
...I bet Aura's stream would be better anyways. Good day gents.
Heyo guys! As a heads-up, I've started doing Dev. Updates for Simulation Protocol 03, in which (for all the new people that missed the time I was doing these for Overload) I will talk about various things I encounter throughout the development, as well as show some screenshots. As I was doing in the past, I will try to post these each weekend in my topic.
Hey guys, I would like to check in on you guys and get your opinion on a concept that I have been thinking about very recently: Augmentation of yourself and your tools/weapons.
I have recently been playing A LOT of The Last Of Us. It is a wonderful game. But what system in that game has intrigued me the most is the idea of parts and supplements. In The Last Of Us, a lot of how you get your ammo and materials to craft certain things like medical kits is through scavenging. In doing scavenging, you also come across parts and supplements.
Parts allow you to upgrade your weaponry in certain areas, such as clip capacity, fire rate, and reload speed. You do such upgrades on a special workbench that is found in certain areas of the game. In order to upgrade further out of first level upgrades, you have to obtain "tools". Tools are basically a level up which allows you to upgrade your weapons further.
Supplements allow you to upgrade your stats and skills that you have, such as crafting speed, max health, and weapon sway.
What I would like to try to do is to implement such a system into my map. Now, obviously, that would take a lot of command block trickery, but I'm not looking for how to do this. I am looking on your opinion as to what you guys think if such a system was implemented into a CTM map, and would you enjoy such a system. Weapon/Tool Upgrades would obviously be enchantments. Supplements would be through permanent potion effects and possibly through certain attributes. I am currently also wondering what item/block would you use for such things as supplements and parts.
You don't lose your items when you die in the Last of Us, do you?
That's the main problem I could see with the upgrades being enchantments. I find that CTM maps tend to be better when they supply, well, SUPPLIES, rather than better weapons or gear that are just in a chest. If you get an iron sword with sharpness 4, it's good, but only until you die and lose it, or it breaks. Then the gameplay that the mapper put in that is balanced around you having the sword is just ruined. If you find a giant iron ore deposit, however, you get iron armor and an iron sword guaranteed for the rest of the map. That's why (I assume) the top map makers like to give the player ridiculous amounts of ore when they give it out. It's like you're upgrading the player with a better tool tier. You can rely on the player having certain things.
I do think it would be cool to see a CTM with keepInventory on by default that uses this system, though. If it's done right

Well the way I see it, an easy and simple solution would be to have it held by a mob and have that item have a large unbreaking enchantment (since the damage varies from mob drops). Then, the player would have an infinite resource to that item.
Sounds fun, I might steal some of this if it's all right.
Please note I've never played The Last of Us, give me a second to wollow in self pity....
Okay!
So for upgrades, are you going for enchantment books? I think those would be good, give the player a choice as to when/what they want to enchant. A book with Power V and Sharpness V gives players a choice they don't often get. If you do use books, make sure to pile in lots of experience.
As far as supplements go, I'd stick with potions. If you want to get complicated, you could maybe make a potion combiner or something. Potions are simple, and they don't require command block trickery. Not that command blocks aren't awesome or anything. I just find that I need to use the economically. I don't have a super powerful computer, so I need to make sure I'm not running too many at once or that I'm not using to fast of a clock.
The biggest problem with potions, is that they're one hit wonders. Once you die with an effect, you can't redrink the potion.
I do have a patent pending system I'm thinking of using in my map. I'm somewhat proud of it, and I don't really want to post it here. That and I haven't made a prototype yet. I'd be happy to PM it to you and let you use it.
I think it'll work decently with your system, especially if you've got a good way to do you custom crafting/upgrading.
Sounds fun, I might steal some of this if it's all right.
Please note I've never played The Last of Us, give me a second to wollow in self pity....
Okay! -snip-
I do give permission to take the concept and idea of it, as long as you give me a little bit of credit somewhere, whether it be on your thread, or somewhere in a map. Doesn't have to be obtrusive, just somewhere to let people know.
In the light of recent talking with some people who know a lot more about command blocking and redstone than I do, I have learned that in order to do such a system such as the weapon upgrade system similar to The Last of Us, it requires a massive system of command blocks that at this point, scares me a little. I have given off the weapon upgrade system off to someone who knows a lot more about it than I do, and they will play around with it as it seems to fit ideally in their map, and return to me if they find a method that is semi-easy to execute.
However, I am sure I will keep the system for supplements. I am currently thinking of making supplements in the form of flowers, either being the peony or some other flower. You find such flowers in patches of 5, 10 and 20. Whether in chests or out in nature. You use these groups of flowers to amplify your own skills in a system with levels. So something like Maximum Health would have, for example, five levels. the requirement for each level goes up as you level up your maximum health, and you can't get second level before you have the first level. First level takes 30 supplements. The next might take 40. So on and so forth. This might require redstone and command blocks to execute, but either than that, it is a solid system that I am proud of.

You got it!
Never thought of a level system... maybe I'll steal that too.
Have you thought of villager trading? Should be simple enough. The hardest part would probably be make an NPC village/r fit within the map.

When I made the area I used gold block while building without thinking. Now I can't decide what I should replace it with...
With gold on the left. With other blocks on the right. Open to suggestions.
I don't know how well the orange and yellow complement each other here. I would probably start by getting rid of that orange carpet, and replacing it with something a little grayer, or just a less vibrant color. Otherwise keep the orange and change the yellow, just because they don't contrast well in my opinion. If you must chose one for the yellow pillars I suggest rethinking the design for the pillars all-together. Get rid of the stained glass around the edges, and flesh out the pillar. Make it 3x3 with some added textures. Then line it with your color, which I suggest 159:4 (yellow stained clay).
Never thought of a level system... maybe I'll steal that too.

I'll jump in the discussion
I think indeed the easiest way for upgrades without torturing yourself with c blocks would be through villager(s), whether in a village or key spot(s)/area(s) of the map.
Regarding fitting them they are many ways, it for sure has to go with your theme and or your lore somehow.
I personally intend to use them...
You'll see in a couple of months how
Now regarding Keepinventory, I feel it's best to have it false and up to the player to turn it on if they can't handle the difficulty of the map or just for several areas.
After all one of the purpose is to survive and fight for your ressources and gear!
Hey there, all. I stream CTMs as well as other indie games, Minecraft servers and probably that's it. I'm your supreme overlord too so I command you to CHECK ME OUT: www.twitch.tv/techniclepanther
Hey all. Just letting you know I'm planning a stream after I get lunch-might be able to do some stuff solo, but I believe my efforts will be alongside Dylanmite, and we will be tackling more of Goliath today. Hope to see you there.
