Ooh. Idea for custom mob. A witch that, when it dies, turns into a zombie villager. Maybe give the zombie villager some potion effects, too.
To go a step further, maybe make it so there's a set number of witches/villagers, and every time they are turned into a villager they become invulnerable, and after a set amount of time (30 seconds maybe) they turn back into witches.

Even Fancier.
Edit: To add to this epic custom mob conversation, I made a mob with a spawner mine cart on his head that spawned supercharged creeper spawners!
Question: if you have a witch with a TON of max HP, and it gets hit constantly by the player, will it actually fight back or will it just chug health potions like a raging alcoholic?
Hypothesis: If witches are damaged, they drink a health potion instead of throwing a potion, so if they are constantly damaged they will constantly drink instead of throwing potions to solve their life problems.
Experiment: Gave a witch like 1000 HP (and max HP) and wailed on it with an iron sword in survival mode.
Results: Witches can throw potions between taking sips of health potions, so once in a while it managed to toss one at me while I was wailing on it. It wasn't very often, as I was able to break half an iron sword on it before it tossed a harming potion finisher. I was standing still and gave the witch knockback resistance to minimize chances of it missing throws, but it still missed like a blind wanker. I was also not wearing any armor, but unenchanted armor wouldn't have really helped.
Conclusion: I needed to know if a damaged witch was threatening to the player at all, because if it wasn't it wouldn't be viable as a boss mob. From these results I think a witch boss is certainly a viable option, but further tests should be undertaken to see if the witch's poison can or cannot be dealt with by the player in a medium-length fight with or without antidotes.

TL;DR: Yeaah... Science, Witches ;P
I have never seen the scientific method being used with minecraft map making before... Good job.
custom mobs are fun. I had a water themed boss and made a zombie with a squid on his head. It actually looks pretty cool! Reminds me of that pirate monster guy from Pirates of the Caribbean.
I love fighting a blaze boss in an area with burnable blocks.
I had an idea for an area. I gotta test to see if it works though. So the building is one of those areas in a butcher shop or slaughterhouse where there are large freezers with large chunks of meat hanging in there. I want to try to spawn an invisible chicken riding a zombie or skeleton then use a lead to string the skeleton up so it hangs off the ground and shoots at you. It can't move but might look pretty cool/creepy. It might look good in red armor too so it looks more like a meaty thing hanging there. I'll probably try this and see if it works and if it's fun. If it turns out good I'll have to use it someplace fun or put it in my next map.
Time to make a giant zombie with a zombie spawner minecart on its head that spews out baby zombies
I also want to try a witch when it dies becomes a zombie and when it dies becomes a skeleton. So basically each time you kill it it becomes more and more dead until it's finally just bones. Add some effects or weapons and have fun!
I would love a way to make creepers go boom but not die. I suppose some redstone/command block magic could make this happen.
Another mob I want to toy with gameplay is a ghast with a creeper spawner minecrart on it's back. I wonder how this would play out with a ender crystal spawner. So theres a lot of explosive things around you with a ghast shooting at you. But I am guessing crystals dont fall like sand. Still, something that could be fun to test.
Anyway, just some custom mob brainstorms

More brainstorming my me...
Ender Crystals can create tons of lag if they don't have a block below them, since they try to put a fire block at their center every tick causing lighting updates like ***
Unfortunately, MOJANG changed the way Creeper fuse tags worked, so you can't hook stuff up to their fuse anymore
And about using giants, they got stupid giant AI and basically just wander around and one-shot every player that runs into their feet.
Btw, would it be an idea to spawn in creepers with lighted set to 1 and an extended fuse? So they have a time to pathfind to you then BOOM!
Almost every rpg-game does this, giving you stronger stuff while making enemies equally strong. Progress in gear in those cases is purely psychological. I don't see why CTM's can't do the same. I'm not saying that every mob should be like IM's black wool, but the occasional more beefy than regular mob can't hurt.
Hi You just mentioned the easiest trap for RPG game designers
Haha I was just recently messing around with the same idea! Different mob though. Can confirm, anything with Ender Crystal on head is horrible *******.
Fancy.

FANCY, FANCY, FANCY...right
I REALLY WORKED hard on it!
I feel betrayed! D:
For those like me who feel the need to see a serious area, here's one I've been working on.
*Gasp* bu....ut I I worked so so so *Whimper* hard on it
Anyway, Nice area.

Yes you have, the map makers just haven't been so deliberate about it
