Community Question Time!!! *fireworks* *firework noises**something similar to the family feud theme*
How did you start making CTM maps? Who/what inspired you to start?
My story is somewhat short, but tearful nonetheless. I had recently been accepted onto Monumenta, and became friendly with Eye Sac, or as most of you know him, Isaac Bardin. At the time, we were just derpin' around, but he (for some unknown reason) got into map making. I played his first map and had a really great time with it. I was even the first to post a finished wool monument screeny on his thread. His work was what made me want to make my own CTM maps, but sadly, by the time I had finished, he was no longer around for me to share my accomplishments with. Now I just roam the minecraft forums, a hollowed shell of my former self, waiting for someone to accept me for who I once was. (not really that last part, it just makes it sound like more of a tragedy)

Looking for a CTM map, you say? Just click on the banner and look no further!
Well, it all started out when I finished Paulsoaresjr's 1.2.5 LP. I remember him talking about his SBC LP, and I thought it was some sort of RPG LP. I decided to check it out.
I don't like it >< For one I have no idea which part of it is the intersection, so can't really compare it. For another I don't like the lava - stone brick - sand/sandstone combo, plus whatever that is lower down... clay bricks? Also, the lava falls look quite out of place and, well, random. Could we have some screenshots from a different angle? And yeah as Com said, bland walls, although I like the way you've used all the different types of sandstone!
can someone help me, should I erode the lines in the wall that stick out?
Heres what I would do: Download and install SPC (It comes with a free world edit!). Download and Install InHaze's Build Commands. Then use the erode tool.
If you're using MCedit for this, then I guess just use the erode tool.
I have progress screenshots! Just to prove that I actually AM doing something (other than lurking like a pro).
Both pictures are from the area "Darkfall Depths". It's the red wool area (the fleecy box is barely visible at about the center of the screen in the first picture), and it contains a nether portal (visible in the second picture) leading to the black wool area.
What do you think? Needs less obvious brush strokes and more block variation, amirite?
the irony is it probably does need less obvious brush strokes and more block variation
Looks cool, but the problem is with the lighting and how ice will melt.
About the how I got into CTM mapmaking... and pretty much a whole story that goes on too long.
I first saw the CTM genre REALLY far back when the Mindcrackers did a OOGE thing and played one of the Vinyl-Fantasy maps. I thought was a Vech's map though, cuz I'm clueless. Anyway, I never, ever really cared for CTM because whenever I played it or saw video of it, it was only insanely hard and annoying maps. So I mainly only played Adventure. When I first decided to start making maps, around April 2013, I planned on doing one adventure map, one CTM map, and then one Survival map, and see which I liked the best. I made the simple adventure map first. It actually got a pretty good response for my first map ever. Then I made a CTM map. I really had no clue what people liked in CTM maps, so I just threw stuff together and had terrible aesthetics. (DON'T DO THAT) Anyway, my first CTM map was terrible and I'm glad Karrot basically told me I sucked in a nice way. I was determined to make a better CTM map so I decided to not make a survival map and make another CTM. I looked at some other CTM maps and was mainly inspired by Amlup instead of Vechs to make maps. I like CTM maps a lot more than adventure maps now. My second map (Corrupted Lands - I didn't know about XeroThomas when I named this map) was better, but it was just really unbalanced I would say. I gave unbelievably good loot. My third one was Corrupted Lands 2. Again it was unbalanced. The loot was fine, it is just too easy. These are both easy and quick to complete which has actually worked out since people like a quick simple map to play. They seem to have been more of me still learning how to make better maps. I wanted a big map. Something that can actually take the player over 2 hours to complete. That's where Abundant Seas came in. It's much bigger and is more fun. It's very balanced and I consider my best map so far by a long shot. It's more like a CTM map where you travel over 2 minutes to each intersection.
What's really crazy to me is how many downloads I've gotten on my Corrupted Lands maps. I have over 1100 with the 2 combined and over 800 on the first one alone. I think Youtube played a big part of that since a person with 400 subs played it. I honestly wish Abundant Seas got that kind of attention since I put a lot more work into it, but I guess that's just how it happens sometimes. I consider the Corrupted Lands maps more of a learning and how I got more into map making which is why I put the whole thing here. SORRY FOR THE LONG RAMBLING!!
COMMUNITY QUESTION (For mapmakers):
How do you combat the "rush in, grab the wool, and get out" strategy? Do you even try?
No no no no no, no, no... no... no...... no, NO! You're doing it all wrong! You need to do something more like... THIS!

Yeah, I have run into the same problem in almost every area, which makes the map super unbalanced. I would love someone if they told me how to fix it without changing the entire area.

I have that problem with a black wool area. I'm probably going to have to redo the entire thing leading up to it just so players can't use ender pearls and destroy the purpose of the last area.
Easy: No spawn delay on spawners initially, and things players need to break or do to progress.
Well the thing about "no spawn delay" is that it can also completely overwhelm the player who's trying to do the area "legit". But, that's probably still a good solution.
Also, I've added some redstone torches as ambient lighting... Better?

Mapmaker and LPer of Complete The Monument (CTM) maps.
Creator/owner of the CTM Community Mapping Server - ask about it on the CTM Community thread!
Current projects:
Thanatos - a subterranean semi-open-world urban CTM
Titan's Revolt - a collaborative project run by ProjectCTM; sequel to Pantheon
Pinnacle - a "sketch" mini-CTM intended for newer players (nearing completion!)
Looks cool but probably just annoying. Placing torches will melt all the ice, and then your cavern is going to be a giant flooded hole...

Yeah.
I kinda went crazy.
IT WAS SO AWESOME.

So I got inspired.
And here I am.

Hey ya big goof! where's all the loot chests in frigid wasteland intesection 4? im out of arrows!
Any criticism?
I'm pretty sure the only arrows in Intersection 4 are in
I like the lava pools, but the walls are a bit bland.
Wish Granted.
maybe that's the point! muahahahaha... and I might try redstone torches, see how it looks. Thanks for the suggestion.
But in all seriousness, the easiest way to get through this area would probably be just to run. I'm trying to think of some ways to combat that...
Y'know what?

Make the torches one block in the ground and use unupdated snowlayers to cover the torches on the ground, the ceiling is fine though. Looks good!

And I also finished that machine I mentioned earlier:
Looks really cool but... Why is there a modern crane with a 200 year old ship next to each other?
What I'm asking myself right now.
Just because it's wooden doesn't mean it's old. :/
