So, I think it's about time we opened this up to the Community at large!
A number of us have been making use of Discord recently, for day-to-day chatting and general discussion, which has resulted in the thread feeling a bit dry of content. As such, we've gone ahead and set up the Discord channel more professionally and are opening it up to anyone that is interested in joining!
Discord is like a combination of Skype and Teamspeak that has chat features, voice features, and channels for specific topics, which is really handy for this community anyway.
So, if you're interested, hit the link below and you'll be invited to the Discord group! A link will be permanently added to the main post as well.
Hey everybody. Figured this was the best place to post since I've literally been gone for a few years and it's like alien territory. Most of you don't know or don't care who I am (rightfully so), but after reconnecting with some of my old friends on here through reddit/other means, I figured I'd try and say hello. Basically, I haven't had a computer worth anything for the past year or so, and I'm saving up for a proper computer here soon, so hopefully I can get back into CTM and Minecraft in general.
What's going on in the world of CTM? I know Vechs is sort of active lately, but are there any other notable projects going on I should be kind of interested in? How have the new updates affected everything? Is CTM dead, and this community the lone stragglers?

Ragecraft III, some other cool maps, 1.9 and 1.10 are getting good maps now, Discordancy is pretty dope, and yeah.
Is CTM dead, and this community the lone stragglers?
It's not dead, personally I'm 80 hours in (about 2/3 done) with Myriad Caves CTM in 1.9.4, and I've seen or played a few mini-CTMs for 1.9 or later as well. I find that checking this YouTube search https://www.youtube.com/results?sp=CAI%3D&q=minecraft ctm every few days is one nice way to ensure I'm not letting any cool maps pass me by.
That's good. I'm hoping to get into mapping as soon as I get a proper computer, so I'm glad that the community will still be going strong by then. Plus, more maps are always a good thing.
I think many think Minecraft is dying because it's dying for them (as in they're not really interested anymore), but CTM seems to be actually dying down a bit. It used to be a lot more youtubers were interested in CTM maps, especially back when Vechs was more active. I'd say the excitement peaked around 1.2.5, and had plateaued until about 1.6 or 1.7, and then Xekaj quit, Vechs quit for a while and hasn't released anything but SHO since coming back, Amlup and three_two have been (sort of) working on their next maps, with the latter planning to quit afterwards...
However, on the other hand, a new generation of CTM mapmakers has picked up the slack when the earlier fell off the map, most notably Heliceo, Krose, ExamineKid, ColdFusion, and several others, who have all created some excellent maps to hold us over. I suspect now that the combat update has occurred, we'll end up seeing a new generation of maps. The minimaps of the Strawberry Jams have already given a hint of this, and with many creators with maps under construction, I'm sure we'll get a ton of new stuff.
Personally, I'd like to see some more full-length themed maps. It seems with Legendary, Vechs planted the seed for the modern CTM area theme format, but unfortunately, good maps with one united theme (and to a larger extent, open world maps in general) have been monopolized by Vetches (Sea of Flame, Inferno Mines, Nightmare Realms, Canopy Carnage, etc.). I'm hoping to see more of these kinds of maps in the future, and I think a lot of modern mapmakers have the potential to do so.
Hey there, all. I stream CTMs as well as other indie games, Minecraft servers and probably that's it. I'm your supreme overlord too so I command you to CHECK ME OUT: www.twitch.tv/techniclepanther
The tenacity of the CTM community has surprised me, too. There's gobs of new stuff, good stuff too, and the old stuff hasn't really gone sour either. I know I've mentioned it before, but I made something of a list of all the CTM maps I could find and as many downloads for them as I could find, and even in its incomplete state, it's some 350 entries long. Much of it's been made past 1.6.4, too, and there's never before been as many tools for mapmaking and modding as there are now.
It may not have such a public audience, but that just means there's space for other people to step in and get their stream/Youtube on, yeh?
Hey Naxza, do you have a link to that list still? I've been trying to find it, but can't be bothered digging through all the forum pages, it's like a needle in a haystack.
Agreeing with Fang, there's lots of maps still in production but the quality bar for a map to be considered 'good' has risen over the last few years. Plus, a lot of people like me do a lot of command blocks mechanisms, which adds even more time.

Yep, couldn't agree more. Just takes a lot of blood, sweat, and jellybeans.
Out of curiosity, is there any interest in a community survival server? I couldn't personally set it up, but if we can get enough people interested surely we can work something out.

We have done that in the past and it had interest for a little bit and then died out rather quickly like most smps nowadays.

K, rant over.

EDIT: Wow, I'm DUMB. Just found it. aaaaaa
I would disagree CTM is dying down. I would say people aren't releasing as much due to the heavy focus on quality though.

Yo, back again.
Most of you probably don't care about this, but anyway. I mapped out where each biome takes it's color from the grass.png (and the foliage.png too) so you can easily change that file to get a biome with any color scheme. Here's the reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/4vcnpe/biome_color_changing_with_resource_pack/

Done before, it died out fast.
That's actually really cool. Thanks for sharing.
There was actually one server a long time ago that had a lot of active players, I think you joined after it ended.

since i'm the authority on this stuff (i'm kind of a big deal)
i declare ctm to be dead
go home everyone
I am home.
I don't care about the Xs. You can call me Navarog. Or Nava if you really want to be a hipster. It's fine.
Well that settles it
Finally someone said it, we can now rest in peace.
