So true, perhaps it is time we moved away from the lists. There are so many maps now, waaay more than there were when the Community was first beginning. Maybe there are just too many to list in a reasonable time. Plus they consistently update/die. I noticed when I tried my hand at updating the upcoming maps list, that its a big wild goose chase.
Maybe it could be nice to use a review as just a personal resource, instead of trying to log the existence of every last one. It may even be a good idea to log the reviews of your map on the actual map page. That is where people are going to be when downloading. Having one or two reviews there sounds like a good idea to me.
Maybe we take down the upcoming maps list, and the huge list of map series, and change them into something a little smaller. Like Hot LP's, or Cool Maps for the newest released maps that spiked a lot of interest. So rarely do maps get released, it might be good to only talk about those. Basically no one comes to us looking for an older map. They want to see the new stuff. So why work so hard updating that? If someone does come round, I'm sure we could just answer the question.
In summary,
- Stop logging reviews on this forum, let the mapmakers use that resource for their own maps. (Divides up the weight)
- The current categories on the front page are to broad. We should design them to take less time to update. Like the front page of Minecraft Forums
The front page has been a time suck for a while. Trying to update it all the time is basically slave labor. Probably time we try something different.
I'm not sure I agree with the not logging reviews on here. One of the reasons, in my opinion, that we post reviews here now is to let everyone know how we feel about a map. Most of us realize that the front page isn't really useful anymore, but we've still been posting reviews to show how we think of a map. A lot of lurkers are looking on here to see for new maps, and the reviews really help them find the next CTM they want to play. Reviews should still be a thing.
Alright, so I know I've kinda been lurking here on and off lately, but I finally have something that needs you guys' opinions. What do you guys think of this Earth-based desert area?
There was a big discussion about this when AlHex joined. Moldy had some good ideas if I remember along with Infi and bunch of other people and AlHex said if I recall correctly that everything can be done, we just have to wait for him to catch up with the thread and sort some IRL stuff.
But since then a lot of time passed. I wrote here a month back and he still seemed to be lurking here but none of the things I asked him for happened...
It's very sad for me because this thread has so much potential but it's all wasted. It's basicly only for the mapmakers. The Map suggestion section just doesn't work and if occasionally someone comes and asks what map he should play it's just self advertising of the newer people in here because the more experience people who could actually recommend the maps don't feel like doing it. (Not trying to offend anyone, just saying)
I'm willing to join the moderator team for the OP if it's not a problem. I have a general idea how to improve it (many of the things were already suggested): sorting the maps in a better way - according to their playable version and other things, adding some more info to them; adding the newest episode of Needs More Sponge somewhere near the beginning; revamp the LPs section completely and figure out some criteria to add newer LPs as well and many other things...
I will not be a moderator in a social way, I'm not very good person for that, but I can manage the OP and update it weekly.
I would think you make a very good mod
I really want some 1.8+ CTM's to play but I can't seem to find any that "fit" my style I suppose you could say?
So I can't get tasch's vines filter to work- it just won't show up in my filters list. If anybody has either a) any idea how to get that to work or where I can find others, that'd be great. Hit me up frens.

Ooh looks cool. It might be a good idea to add a few more of those cool dead trees, though- they look a little clustered right now.
You know, they're all on that one hill.

Good News, i have gotten singleplayer worldedit to work.
Bad news, i forgot most of the help i got from when i was working on the community ctm map. I am wondering how i might add a randomized mask brush of some sort. That way instead of having blotches of netherrack in this area i could have patches of netherrack.
What i did to get what i have now was i typed /mask 43 to set my hand to mask doublestoneslabs, then i did /mat 87 (87,88... something like that), then on right click i am able to create the blotches.
So, if you know of any way i could randomize this slightly, then please reply with advice.
Actually I will have to disappoint you right away saying that I will probably not be able to recommend a map since I don't play that many maps and often have trouble finding maps to play myself but I can try. (The difference between recommending right away and doing it trough the OP is that in the OP the info will come from the mapmaker or the community, not from my head.)
What is your style? Do you prefer classical minecraft gameplay and difficulty based on lack of resources maps like wow_there_hasn't_been_a_map_like_that_in_quite_some_time or do you enjoy the more combat oriented CTMs like RCII or SR?
The map was combat oriented although it contained some old school but working traps. There were some clever custom mobs but not too many and sometimes they felt out of place or were not designed very well. Some areas were a bit too spammy and not very engaging for me.
There were tons of loot and it was overall very forgiving map.
The aesthetics were somewhere around today's standard but some areas were too similar in shape and types of structures.
In spite of the fact it was his first map it was very good.
Fury of The Sun I don't remember by who (late night for me, got to go). This map is kind of different. It's more like a adventure map with monument. It looks well executed but I don't know, have not played it.
There were also bunch of Minimaps released (eg. That's What I Call a CTM or the last Strawberry Jam maps) and maps for 1.7 like Ancient Will I by Dani_F.
If you haven't played one of these and choose to play it, have fun.
I am flexible but my favorite style is like a hybrid between Chipmunk's maps and Vetch's Spellbound Caves

You can use Rubisk vine brush instead of Tasch's vines filter.
Hey guys, I've got some really bad news. My hard drive seems to have corrupted all my MCEdit files to the point that I can't even delete them, and even when I created an entirely new installation of MCEdit, it still won't run. Unfortunately, it seems to have only affected MCEdit, which means I really can't justify replacing it at this point in time. Basically this means that I won't be able to mapmake effectively until I find an alternate solution to this (I'm thinking WorldEdit, but I've had a lot of trouble getting that running in the past and with the new- i.e. like 1.5 update xd- modding system it makes even less sense, plus it's a lot harder to create large outlines of areas with WE). Any and all help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated
P.S. I also did /syschk /F C: (or whatever it is) and that didn't fix the problem either

Don't know if this will help but have you tried moving MCedit into a different directory?

Alright so just a final feedback on my area here:
I am honestly happy with it but I think the giant mushroom stalk is to small to make a path out of, I might remove that...
Other than that I love how this turned out, I just need to put in the mobs and loot <3

omg kaizo caverns 2 !!
I don't get the reference, but i am honored that my areas are good enough that they could be mistaken for a much more popular map series.

@Infanderp it's a brush not a filter.... I think you go into the MCedit app data and put it in there
Also I added some railings:
You can use Rubisk vine brush instead of Tasch's vines filter.
