Usually on a map's thread there's a list of LPs so that's a good place to look if you're looking for one on a particular map. The last episode of mah RD3 LP is coming tomorrow, and since it's only 19 episodes it doesn't take tooo long to watch... I've also got a few really long LPs in playlists if you've got a week to burn lol...

Wow smeagolow castle looks neat but you really need to work on blending it in. This is what you're entrance feels like at the moment:
If I may, I actually think it sticking out plays in it's favor - like some ancient citadel from underneath an ocean that had long-ago dried up. If he does a bit to add some sandstone/sand flecked across the castle and buried parts of the side a bit better, it'd fit that role perfectly.
In fact, I'd suggest adding large sea creature "bones" using clay or sommat around the area and play it off as a dried up ocean.
I second this. Watch this guy. He's totally not the guy that posted it, and is very enjoyable.

Not very relevant, but somehow that reminded me of this:
...even less relevant given the fact that this picture isn't from a dried-up ocean. It's just a random whale/shark skeleton in the middle of the desert.
oh dear god why must I make obscure references
...anyway, I had an idea for a mini-CTM, but with a full monument. Basically, 16 wool but tiny areas. I'm thinking of making one as sort of an introduction to the CTM genre for people who haven't heard of CTM before. Maybe I'll make an entire series of these mini-full-monument-CTMs. Take a wild guess what I'm gonna call them:
Sketches.

That would actually be great, I've been having some trouble getting back into CTMing. Do it now. Are you done yet?

Ok i'm cool with you doing it but that's literally what Sketch did with All in a Nut Shell so don't claim it as an original idea

Sounds neat. I look forward to playing whatever you come up with. Don't forget about that Thanatos, though, because that one's looking great as well.
(And regarding what Apollo mentioned, I'm 100% OK with it.)

Even if there is some truth in what you said, you really don't have to be such a freaking jerk everytime you ever say something.
I know that most of the time you bring up some good points, but stop being such a **** all the time, it's freaking annoying.
I've known about CTM maps for a long time, but only now have I been able to complete my first map. I have had a lot of practice using the editing tools, but game play is something that really needs an outside point of view to perfect.
Anyway, if any of you have the time to give me some feedback that would be wonderful The map is below

Don't bother. The mod of this thread finds Hybran funny, so he can basically do whatever he wants. I don't really get it, but app aren ly typing like a c0mpl3t3 idi0 t is such fun ny m8!
Anyway, what makes a CTM fun? Gameplay. Aesthetics are way less important to keep players interested. I've seen quite some download charts by mapmakers, and apparently, having compelling gameplay just works... much better. Aesthetics are great, gameplay is necessary. How to create good gameplay? Variation in challenges.
So, I am thinking of making a CTM map, but, I am wondering what makes one good.
This is mostly subjective, but some good standards of quality are decently pretty areas and good gameplay.
For pretty areas you mainly don't want them to be empty, don't want them to be all one color, and if its a cave you don't want it to be perfectly round or square. To keep them from being empty add trees if its a grassy area, or hills and dying plantlife if its a barren one. Structures are usually a good thing to add too, but it really is determined by the theme of the area. What works for a scarred battle ground doesn't work for an idyllic glade, so choose accordingly.
For good gameplay, you just need to be solid. Make sure the difficulty is balanced appropriately so that its not punishing while still being challenging. (There's a great video by Extra Credits on this, i can link it to you if you still need more help with difficulty) Also make sure the aesthetic pieces (hills, structures, trees, etc.) complement the gameplay, providing dynamics for countering mobs and traps and not just getting in the player's way. Also finally, gimmicks do not make good gameplay. They can sometimes be beneficial but honestly, just starting your first map, don't try too many gimmicks. To be honest you aren't really good at building neat ideas because you don't have the experience, and if you can't build them right they will just drag down your map. Just focus on giving the players new and interesting ways to tackle each new area, not making the challenge anything really different (except for ranking up the difficulty, of course. )
Thanks, yes, these helped, and I hope to get some images up soon on progress. In the mean time, this will be a group project, so if anyone wants to help, send me a pm.

Does anyone know how to use scoreboard to only track kills of mobs with a certain name? e.g. Player kills "scorched native" and gets 1 point added, but when they kill a normal zombie the score doesn't go up.
So with the mentions of Extra Credits scattered through this thread, I figure I'd post a Let's Play I just started up. Inspired by their Design Club videos where they analyze levels, I've decided to do the same with CtM maps. I actually do game design for a small indie studio, so my goal with these series is to try get people to think more about level design, since so many minecraft maps do end up focusing on aesthetics and gimmicks over solid gameplay. First episode is all about the introductory zone to Depths of Irkalla, mainly talking about how it uses the environment to set a tone and backstory with no signs or books. I know it's not the greatest, I'm new at this and a little rambling at times, but I hope people are interested.

edit yes, it's basically Sketch's idea, but obviously not necessarily built over a 3-day period.
