I actually adore the new Enchanting system. It helps lock Enchanting to a higher-tier system, as it was intended to be, and adds some nice difficulty to CTM maps, so that a player can't just stumble across an Enchanting Table and make huge use of it right off the bat.
Just got that new diamond sword? Let me sing you the song of athropods.
But thats what made it great. The risk of getting a bad enchant made it so that not every item you ever get is enchanted to the max. If everything you had was enchanted with the best possible enchant, the game wouldn't be fun to play. And now as long as you have way to easily farm XP and whatever else you might need, you can just flip through the list until the best possible enchant is found.

I could be wrong, but I believe it's not that easy. Each item has a few enchants it *can* get, at varying costs.
I personally have to agree with Fangride here guys. The current enchanting system is too 2-dimensional! This adds some great new challenge to enchanting, as well as a use for gold other than just health potions and golden apples.

I know a lot of you are gonna be mad, since you have to update your maps. Stick half a stack of gold next to the ench. table in your map, and you're done. Don't complain, minecraft evolves, and that's not a bad thing. (I'm probably way to easy on this, since I don't have anything to update, but oh well).
I think the system is great. Enchanting tables were really OP. You couldn't give the player half an enchanting table, and if you gave them one, they would become like 1.5x more stronger. Balancing with where to put it was really hard, and limiting the amount you could spread difficulty through your map.
However, this way, you can "control" the enchanting. You can give away like 1-3 enchantments, and if they want more, they have to farm zombie pigmen. The fact that you can see the enchantments seems bad, but remember, you can't just choose 1. There is the same chance to get fortune, but you'll see it before enchanting... Refreshing the table does nothing afaik....
Can we modify the enchantments that are possible in any way?
So I was thinking, hey, why don't I make a trailer for my CTM map? So I did.
Hope this convinces a few more people to give the map a go. A lot has changed since I did a closed beta a few months ago. Download meh plea

I'm eager to see how it's used.
The old enchanting system was a Skinner box anyway :/
I don't care about updating any maps. I'm just bummed out because there is no more risk, Its all predetermined. And actually, I like giving the player gold before they get the enchanting table, so my maps are all good there. I think in the future it will use more than just gold though. And I'm OK with change in general, but this is a bad change. Its like if creepers didn't explode anymore (although this is not that extreme of a change). I can't see any good to come out of that change, same with this. Well... I can see some good coming from it, but not that much.
I think mobs should drop some sort of crystal rarely, which could be used instead of gold. I do agree with you that gold isn't a good option (too rare and annoying to get, and providing gold in maps such as CTMs opens up the option to make golden apples, which can be OP).
I never use oak leaves or saplings, so that I can give out gold without worrying about golden apples.
Why change something that worked perfectly well before. I hope they just make gold reduce the level requirement
