Howdy, folks, and welcome to "Link of Faith", a story-driven adventure map inspired and motivated by Cyan's Myst. This map utilizes a number of features added in snapshots leading up to the Minecraft 1.4 update and thus will not be released until after the release occurs, at the earliest.
Link of Faith will be a 1-8 player adventure, immersing any and all players into a number of highly differing worlds each with their own past and challenges to face. The players will have a hand in shaping both these worlds and the NPCs that they meet. As this is a Myst inspired map, players will find worlds contained within "Linking Books" that, with a single touch, pull the player into the world within.
UPDATE 12/9/2012: We're over 50% done! If I had to give a rough estimation, I'd say that each of the eight areas will take a bare minimum of an hour each. So with those eight areas alone, you're looking at eight hours (at least) of gameplay so far... plus the other material we've got planned, you're all going to be busy!
UPDATE 12/22/2012: Holy crap suddenly hardcore cracking down and working, we're at a stage where we can do testing! Actual, legitimate testing! Let's DO this!
UPDATE 1/15/2013: THE MAP IS FINISHED. Direct your attention to the OFFICIAL RELEASE POST.
As this is a WIP project, anything you see up until the release of the map is subject to change. This thread will be updated to reflect updates / new screenshots as the map is developed.

If you've read this far, thanks for your interest and curiosity; as well as your time spent taking a look at what's to come! If you'd like to keep close tabs on this project, feel free to utilize the following banner to link back here!
Link of Faith has a custom texture pack that is unfit for normal Minecraft playing, but is based on an existing texture pack: If you like the look of the map, you should definitely check out Good Morning Craft! Link Removed

Here we have the first glimpse at the first of the map "keys". These will play a vital role in puzzles throughout the map and utilize Sarc's "Real Keys" technique.
The following screenshots have also been added to the Screenshots/Teasers section:
wow Can't wait for this to be released! And what if you posted a download link that asked if people were using the snapshot?

If you need any help with any computer issues, check my website for contact information. I also do Minecraft Mods... well basic ones, I can make blocks that do specific things. I've also dabbed into making Plugins... like before, simple plugins

I actually highly doubt we'll be finished before the 1.4 update, but in any case I'd rather avoid a snapshot-based map download as some players prefer to avoid snapshots and some mods only update for full Minecraft version updates.

Figured I may as well post up more screenshots as things get built. We've done a little bit of decorative work with new areas, but the majority of our additions have been redstone-based behind the scenes.
I finally feel satisfied enough with the mechanics to show off, what I think is, the hardest puzzle we've built so far:
The bundle of other screenshots can be found here and in the main post:
Edit: A part of me is wondering if I should recruit any other builders for the project; my existing team is rather... inconsistent. Very reliable, but inconsistent.
Edit2: Despite the prominent in-game use of Book and Quills and the hope that the Lectern is implemented, my team is conflicted on the book/note options we should offer. Simply in-game Book and Quills? Add image files with notes? PDFs? Audio files? Links to YouTube videos? We have the means to do any and all, but we don't know how interested people are in the options.

This time around, we have four screenshots from the Brown area! Once a bit of motivation set in, this area came easy. The story basically built itself as we built up the area! In our screenshots, we have some teasers at the abandoned academy and in the vaults! You guys are in for a sure treat when you reach this place.
The next teasers may not show up for a longer period, however; my crew and I are taking a slight break to review Myst and Riven by replaying the games in full. Wish us luck, because I know for a fact that I don't remember any of the Riven puzzles.

No screenshots this time around, but I'm at least mentioning that they're coming soon. Not particularly sure if I should bump up this recruitment thread in hopes of speeding up progress, but maybe I will; we'll see.
My current crew and I just finished up playing through Myst, Riven, and Exile and we have quite a few fantastic puzzle ideas in mind, now. It's all a matter of building, building, and finishing now. More details and screenshots as things unfold, but right now things are going great and we're well on the way to calling an area or two "finished"!

Alright! Time for a little update and some screencaps. With the latest update involving Anvils and the ability to custom-name items, we're going back and updating our chests full of stuff. This actually takes a considerable amount of concerns off of our shoulders and reduces the amount of out-of-game content necessary to enjoy and experience the map. There are going to be quite a number of easily-overlooked details added, and it'll be that much more rewarding when all of you players find them! I'll honestly be sorely disappointed by any speed players because they'll miss out on so much.
The screencaps this time are of the red area and, gasp, an area that I'll leave to your imagination. Good luck guessing, I'm not telling which area it belongs to. Clickable thumbnails as usual!
Congratulations, Kneecap! Since you posted before anyone in the Yogscast forums about the video, you have given Minecraft Forums 3 exclusive screenshots, courtesy of me!
For even more suspense, I have put the links to the screenshots instead of the screenshots instead... be prepared to be AMAZED! These leaks, as they are, will just about blow your mind! I promise!
Note: Anything as seen here is subject to change without warning, notice, or any other such privilege. This means that anything in the screenshots may not be there when the map is released. Please do not blame me if they aren't; I only help make the map. - jetio4

No pictures this time around, we've mostly been doing redstone work! We'll have some pretty pictures next update, but if you haven't, scroll up a bit to see the we put together for Link of Faith!
As a silly question, I imagine you'd all prefer a full-release of a map instead of a demo, right? I've seen a few people release demo versions of their map and it made me pretty curious. We plan on a full release so you can enjoy it all, uninterrupted!

This time around, we've got some snippets from all over the map! We've got some pretty substantial information this time, so read on if you're curious!
We've brewed up a brand new starting area, giving the players a choice of eight colors! That's right; just because we can, you guys get to choose what color scientist you want to be-- oh, did I say scientist? Have fun theorizing what that could mean!
In addition, we've got two more puzzles in the brown area, bringing us ever closer to the completion of this area! With a little adjustment, Brown will be finished! We're finalizing redstone and polishing off books. Things are looking good here!
We've also, lastly, got a silly message from your Captain as well as a view from the ship's wheel; and most importantly a look inside of our chests! Link of Faith will utilize the center five squares of each chest for important items while all surrounding spaces are purely decorative. Take a look!

An amusing idea came to mind: Usually, we only show off images of the areas to lure you in and it's pretty clear they're big places; in stark contrast to the usual, have some birds-eye views of six areas we've been working on. If you can match them to some of the things we've posted, then congratulations! You can have a cookie. If not, don't fret, there'll be cookies in-game just waiting for you.
As a bonus: Four of these birds-eye view areas are not likely to change between now and the release of the map, whereas two of the others are very prone to change. I won't spoil which is which!
Enjoy!:

Of all the areas, we'd neglected to work on the central Island the most. In this set of screenshots, you get a glimpse of the modifications we've made to one (of the eight) doors on the central island; the others have been updated as well, but I'm not going to spoil them all for you!
Outside of the central island, we finished up what is likely my favorite puzzle ever (and should I ever make another map, you'll find this puzzle in that one too. I love this thing. Speculate all you want about what it is, but be excited when you get to it! Don't get left in the dark on this one. Speaking of dark, the third screenshot is from the darkest area we're working on. It's so dark there that we can't even see without setting up worklights! What have we gotten ourselves into?!
As usual, screenshots are clickable thumbnails!
EDIT: Also, for those with a keen eye, you might notice another key in the first screenshot. We've got over a dozen keys so far; exciting!
when you said "with a with a single touch, pull the player into the world within" (about "linking books) can enchantment tables be used to cause block updates?
I've been experimenting with a number of BUD-enchanting table possibilities, but I haven't settled on one that's both reliable enough and compact enough for the needs of the map. At present, the linking books use either tripwires or buttons; which is very likely to change as soon as I find a suitable option.
As a note, the stacking property of dropped items now includes other blocks (with exceptions) instead of exclusively maps. This can be utilized for lock/key systems as demonstrated here. I know I'm having a blast using this new feature/behavior and I hope to see others use it too!
as an alternative to your current workaround this would be both silent and invisable. (I'm currently using it for some of the entrances on my map and am considering replacing most of the other types with it as well)
WOAH. WOAH. I'm familiar with SethBling's stuff, but I didn't know he made something THAT magical! Testificates with 0 HP and spawners with custom activation radius'... Brilliant? BRILLIANT. This is magical! My thanks to you, sir, for pointing me in this wonderful direction.
currently I'm using re-textured junglewood & cocoa beans as my key's, which could prove more appealing for visual reasons. but I will run into problems with this down the line, where players would be able to take keys from a previous area and use them in a later one. (plus it mean i have to give up using jungle wood as a building block.)
Just make sure you don't rename any of cocoa bean keys or they won't stack; unless that behaviour has been fixed. Also be wary that players may accidentally place the junglewood instead of using it correctly, which could prove problematic.
I will play around with it and if i'm satisfied I'l send you a schematic of my finished design if you would like.
WOAH. That's some unique item behaviour in glass! It looks like the items climb through to get to the next open "air" block in the stack vertically. If this behavior is kept and not considered a "bug" and fixed, that would indeed be super handy! That'd be very, very useful to implement in my current key systems as they currently empty into cacti (for I am an unkind and unforgiving god).

Meanwhile, my team and I have been productive in Aysu with these updates. A water pump control station for the Dam and a few secretive updates in the submerged area! Oh, what, are you afraid of water? You'll be going (20,000 leagues) under the sea in this area!
EDIT: OH. Some of you may have noticed that I've (finally) started using Optifine, and also, if you have a keen eye one of the above teaser images contains a glimpse of one of my elusive co-builders! GASP.
the Item behavior shouldn't be patched out as it's an intentional feature to prevent items from getting lost through halfslabs. apparently 1.4.3 is pretty buggy (which is kind of funny seen as the update consists intirely of bugfixes.) so I plan on waiting for it to be fixed before i test out this feature though.
Still quite the magical feature! You can bet I'll be keeping tuned to it for possible implementations! All of Link of Faith's key systems could certainly use it if it's that awesome.

All the areas now have names, all the authors now have names, and over half of the command blocks for teleportation have been linked up! Also we're considering offering a few limited opportunities to participate in a pre-release playtest sometime near the end of next month, would there be anyone interested who'd be willing to give a thorough report of any flaws / problems encountered? The focus would be finding and fixing any bugs evident in the map at that time.
Meanwhile, have a screenshot from, yet again, a seeeeeeeeeeeecret area! You won't know where this is until you get there! (As always, it's a clickable thumbnail!)

If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much is a video worth?
1:30 long video with YouTube running at 30 frames a second = 2,700,000 words.
I think
This map looks great, can't wait for it to be released! Good luck!
Almost accurate! My video program is evil and creates 29.97 FPS videos, giving us 2,697,300 words. That tiny 0.03 FPS difference cost us 2,700 words!
There'll be plenty of pictures posted as we get closer to finishing, so keep tuned!
