I've always loved video games. Even when I was really young, I remember sneaking down from my room at midnight to play on my Gamecube. Then getting promptly caught by my parents because I didn't mute the sound. And more than play games, I want to make games. And making a Minecraft map is kinda like that, right? I do have experience coding in Java and making a text based game with that, but there is something great, and terrifying, about making a Minecraft map. I remember playing Herobrine's Mansion/Return and being awestruck, especially by Return's spells. The fireworks just had me shocked. I wanted to make a map like Herobrine's Return where you could actually use those spells. And... after almost a year and something like 300 hours of development... I did. 1.8 gave me that chance. I originally made a PVP map with this system, Dawn of Magic. It isn't as good. The spells aren't as cool. But it was still my first map I published. And now, here's my best. I hope you enjoy... Of course, knowing my luck, it's going to turn out that I forgot to pull that one lever that turns on everything and the whole map is broken. I sure do hope it all works... please...
Pick one of five classes in this four hour long (at least, that's how long it takes me playing solo) map, inspired by greats like Herobrine's Return. Except here, I've added a touch of magic. Well, not a touch because the entire map is based around it. You can either go alone or with up to four people you might call friends. Although, I haven't tried it with any number past 3, so it might get laggy after that. And the map takes zero mods. This map is for Minecraft version 1.8.8. Currently, the majority of the map should work in the 1.9 snapshots, but the final parts don't.
Features:
Five classes each with three unique spells, plus a shared fireball spell
Each class has four upgrade trees, one for each spell + one for passives
Currency and scoring
Custom items, weapons, and bosses
Storyline exposition!
Five semi-open world levels
Some custom models here and there
References EVERYWHERE!
7,111 command blocks. It has a mess of redstone, so it MUST work!
Plus one random block of pink wool. I'm sure it's somewhere... maybe...
You get four "sacred" items. Now, they might look like a map, snowball, egg, and XP bottle, but they are actually artifacts of incredible power. Well, if you have the resource pack enabled properly, they should look different. Right click with any of them to cast the corresponding spells. In addition, each class has an ultimate spell that you get later on in the map and a wand spell that you get rather early. Each spell takes a varying amount of mana. By default, you can have up to 50 mana and you recover about 2 mana per second. Certain potions, abilities, or pieces of armor can help you recover mana faster. Technically speaking, you have unlimited mana because you can go into negative mana. However, if you do, you'll get various status effects like poison, slowness, and wither. The effects get worse the farther into the negative you go until it eventually straight up /kills you. You respawn with 30 mana after death.
"The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled..." - Plutarch
The Mage is a good, all around class. They can launch fireballs slightly faster than other classes. Their first spell is Ice Barrage. For 15 mana, it fires a small blizzard of snowballs in the direction you're facing. Enemies hit by this take damage and are slowed. Their second spell is Molten Spike. It launches the closest enemy into the air with a pillar of flames at the cost of 20 mana. Their final spell is Cuboid of Cold. For 15 mana, it launches a blast of wind in the direction you are facing. That blast flings enemies and damages them. Doesn't work on flying enemies very well. Their wand spell is a volcano shot that explodes into a little ball of flames when the projectile hits the ground.
Unfortunately, for this video I had to record myself, so it isn't as good as the others.
"Nature always wears the colors of the spirit." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
The Druid's first spell is Thorn Burst. It launches a ring of thorns from your location for 15 mana. It can be upgraded to carry either poison or healing potions. Their second spell is Falling Star. It targets a nearby enemy and summons a falling, explosive block above them. Costs 20 mana. Their third spell is Shapeshift. It "transforms" you into a wolf temporarily. While you are a wolf, you have strength, speed, jump boost II, and resistance. In addition, once per shapeshift, you can cast Feral Howl, which costs no mana and starts out doing nothing. It needs to be upgraded to do anything. Shapeshifting costs only 15 mana, but you do not recover mana naturally while shapeshifted. You can still recover mana with potions or other sources though. Their wand spell fires off a quick blast of three thorns in whatever way you're looking.
"We are twice armed if we fight with faith." - Plato
The Cleric's first spell is Chain of Light, which costs 20 mana. It launches a projectile which damages nearby enemies and heals nearby allies. If it hits a mob, it will split into a bunch of other chains, which can also split. The splitting stops after that. A fair warning, if you fling this into a massive group of entities, expect a lot of lag. Their second spell is Shadow Flay. For 25 mana, it launches two shadow nodes into the air. After a few seconds, they explode into darkness, debuffing all nearby enemies. Their final spell is Divine Wrath. Costing a whopping 35 mana, it gives you temporary access to the Staff of Mercy to use to beat enemies' faces in. Landing a kill with the staff will restore 5 mana to you, so it's good against swarms of weak enemies. Their wand spell is a lightbomb. It fires a projectile into the air that explodes if it spends at least a second in the air.
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." - Arther C. Clarke
Technomancers have stronger fireballs, but they take longer to recharge. Their first spell is Sniper. It costs 20 mana and gives you one shot with a very powerful sniper rifle. You cannot move while holding the sniper rifle. Their second spell is Polarity Slam which launches all nearby enemies into the air and holds them there for a moment for 20 mana. It also deals a little damage. Doesn't deal damage against flying enemies like blazes. Their final spell is AirStrike. For 30 mana, it places a beacon that calls in a powerful airstrike after a few seconds. Their wand spell is a grenade launcher (yes, that wand is actually a grenade launcher. Don't ask.). It fires a long ranged projectile that will explode after a little while.
"My strength is as the strength of ten, for my heart is pure." - Alfred Lord Tennyson
Dragon Acolyte's launch powerful fireballs, but slowly. Their first spell is Shining Shots. For 15 mana, it launches 3 enderpearls in the direction you're facing. These enderpearls can either hit enemies directly for damage or if they hit the ground, they will explode a few moments later. Their second spell is Ender Acid. For 30 mana, it launches several acid nodes that fly around randomly and rain down acid on enemies. The acid also can buff allies. Their final spell is a fun one, Draconic Rush. For 25 mana, it launches you in the direction you're facing, causing an explosion where you land. You also ignite enemies you pass by and it can be sometimes used to glitch out of the map. However, you take some recoil fall damage and it doesn't work against Fairy type enemies. Their wand spell fires a small projectile a short distance. After five seconds, you will teleport to it in a little explosion. Dragon Acolytes tend to be slightly better in groups because they have passives that can buff allies, but you're perfectly able to play it solo.
The laggiest class in the game is actually Mage, solely due to Ice Barrage. Cleric's Chain of Light can also cause serious lag if it happens to hit a large group of entities. Some bosses can also be laggy, namely the bosses of the 4th and 5th level. It probably won't lag if you're playing solo, but for servers, here are the classes in order of least laggy to most laggy:
Technomancer < Druid < Dragon Acolyte < Cleric < Mage
Now, there seems to be a high correlation between the number of pictures a map has on its tread and how successful it is, and because correlation ALWAYS implies causation...
Level 1, ManaStream.
Level 2, The Treetops
Level 3, Venlanti
Level 4, Techletia.
Level 5, The Crater? I guess?
The post level hub, the Ethereal Keep
An example of skill trees. This is for Druid.
So much lore text I had to turn down my GUI scale!
This is me having a WONDERFUL time. This picture and the one after it are from before I had custom models.
Dragon Riding! I was messing around with resource packs, so that's why the golden apple looks weird.
Yes, I know, Adfly. I'm so greedy. I would say it really helps support me, but it doesn't. Although, something I've wanted to do for a long time is actually try to use a map to raise money for charity. So there you go, clicking on one of the above links donates up to .2257 cents to teaching kids magicThe World Resources Institute. And because it takes 5 seconds of your time, it's like getting paid 1.6251 dollars per hour and donating it straight to charity! I know I've always wanted to work for much less than minimum wage without realizing it. Sadly, this donation is not tax deductible. Sorry.
Here's the direct links if you want those instead.
Now, I'm not very good with the widget, so if you have a choice of which file to download, just pick the most recent one.
This map has a resource pack directly in the world folder, so it should work auto-magically. But if it doesn't or you are on a server, here's the download link to specifically the resource pack. It's not actually that big and you can play the map perfectly fine without it.
Teh Youtubes (although right now, I only have Let's Plays of the alpha version, where things were somewhat different. Most notably, Cleric had the OP Pull of the Grave spell.):
Now, I have tested it several times, so I'd hope nobody runs into any issues. But just in case...
First, download the .zip file from any one of the 5 possible links. Open up Finder/File Explorer (Finder for Mac, Explorer for Windows) and go to your downloads/where ever you have your browser put files. Either right click and extract the .zip file or just open it. Inside, there is another folder called "ManaMight", this one isn't zipped though. Right click it and click cut. Now you need to get to your .minecraft folder. Open Minecraft and go to Options > Resource Packs > Open resource pack folder. That should open a new Finder/File Explorer tab in your .minecraft folder. Go up one layer and paste the ManaMight folder into your saves. Or, if you're making a server for it, paste it into your server folder and change the server.properties to say "level-name=ManaMight". Or rename the world folder, either works.
You might be able to break certain spells by spamming them really fast. It's not too difficult to fix if it does happen though. First, type into chat /scoreboard players set @p spell1 0 . Use "spell1" if your class's first spell broke, "spell2" if your class's second spell broke, and so on. After that, discard the glass pane and /give yourself another snowball, egg, or XP bottle, as needed.
Clear out your inventory of any filled or blank maps. Wait about 10 seconds, then go into creative and grab another blank map and put it into the first hotbar slot.
First, take note of your coordinates with f3 so you can come back. Then, use /tp @p 205 5 -51 . I hid a chest there with copies of a bunch of different items and a bunch of other random stuff. Take whatever you need then tp back to where ever you were.
First off, there are several points where you're not supposed to be able to summon her because it would be totally game breaking. These include, inside the Ethereal Keep, inside those mini-dungeon void rifts, and in certain parts of the final boss. If you're certain that you should be able to summon her, use /setblock 118 5 -64 air , and try again. For any other problems, move far enough away from the dragon to make her despawn (it's about 30 blocks) and try again, preferably away from other players. If you're in limited space, drop the Dragon Command in any direction to make her fly away from you. And if that doesn't work, just /gamemode 1 to fly around. The Dragon Riding doesn't work as well on servers.
Jan 2nd, 2015: Added a preview of level 3.
Jan 3rd, 2015: Fixed some bugs, made the boss fights a little harder.
Jan 4th, 2015: Added the "Force Spells" option at the very start. It should prevent you from losing spell items due to having a full inventory.
Jan 4th, 2015 part 2: Made the intro more interesting. Varied up some of the initial buildings. Made the night raid shorter.
Jan 7th, 2015: Bug fix, added a new vendor, new building, text is now colored, no longer possible to wait out the night siege, added a new side quest in the treetops.
Jan 8th, 2015: made tree parkour a little easier, Changed the clock with the Treetops boss fight.
Jan 11th, 2015: New side quest in level 1. Now, celestial pets have the ability to spawn in automatically tamed.
Jan 15th, 2015: Bug fixes, Venlanti now has mobs. The boss fight isn't done though.
Jan 18th, 2015: replaced potentially laggy clocks, the Venlanti boss fight is finished! Rejoice! Also, lots of bug fixes and got some more interesting pictures. The potion shop in the Etherial Keep will now open after finishing level 2.
Jan 27th, 2015: Bug fixes. Nerfed Cleric slightly, buffed Druid. All classes now have ultimate spells which are unlocked after beating Venlanti. Sadly, there currently isn't much to use them on.
Feb 2nd, 2015: Posted some initial screenshots of the 4th level. Reduced Falling Star's mana cost. Changed the Dragon Acolyte's first spell from Dragon's Blessing to Shining Shots to make it more viable when playing solo. Still isn't the best class for solo play though.
Feb 6th, 2015: Replaced mage's Flaming Wrath with Ice Barrage.
March 24th, 2015: Bug fixes, replaced the Dragon Acolyte's ultimate spell with something cooler. Added some of level 4, but doesn't have the balance or boss fight yet.
March 29th, 2015: YAY! Level 4 is FINISHED! The boss fight took me several hours, but its in now. Also, Cleric's first spell has been replaced with chain of light and Dragon Acolyte's third spell has been replaced by draconic rush.
March 30th, 2015: Me vs. bugs, round 1, Fight! Fixed bug with general store, fixed bug with druid's temple thingy tping you to the cleric's skills, fixed bug with draconic rush randomly launching you into space (it was kinda funny the first time) and made the boss fight much shorter and less tedious.
April 23rd, 2015: Bug fixes, made intro stronger.
April 26th, 2015: Bug fixes, replaced current clocks with /fill clocks to reduce lag. Gave more mana after death (from 10 to 30), made summoning a new celestial kill any you currently have out.
--------OFFICIAL RELEASE!--------

Bugs/Suggestions
-So in Techletia (idk how to spell it, but it was the electromancer stage), I only had to fix one of the solar panels, then all the chat dialogue from fixing all of them played, the gates opened, and I was able to fight the boss without having to fix any of the others. I was playing cleric, in case that helps troubleshoot it.
-The final boss was pretty laggy until I turned down my video settings. Maybe adding a sign or something to warn about this would be helpful?
-The Holy Grail references were hilarious, but the part outside the castle with the raining cows and chickens seemed a tad difficult (to be honest, I had to cheat past it).
-Not sure what the rabbit spawn egg is supposed to do (tried renaming it and spawning it in ethereal keep, but it didn't seem to do anything).
-The Notched Grail never came back after my first use of it (I tried to save at least one slot in my inventory for it, but maybe a mob drop from the final duel filled it?).
Overall, I had a blast playing this one. Definitely worth playing, but if you do try it, play past the first few levels (it gets way better in the later levels).

Responses to bugs/suggestions
- I think that might have been from certain scoreboard objectives carrying over from Venlanti... it should be fixed now.
- Hm... okay. I'll add a note in the post. You really don't need a render distance above like... 5. Maybe 1.9's new repeat command blocks will make it less laggy.
- Montey Python is one of the cornerstones of civilized society as we know it. Also, I've made the jumps leading into the Castle of Arrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh a little easier.
- Ugh... Does nobody remember that meme? There is no profit. It's just a meme reference. About 6 people have asked me 'what do you do with the rabbit?' and the answer is nothing. It's just as useless as the power core. ... ... YOU KNOW WHAT? FINE! Have your profit! There's now something to do with the rabbit in the Ethereal Keep.
- Hm... I'm not exactly sure how... Did you use it before and it did come back but was lost forever in the final battle? Or did you never use it except for in the final battle?
Which levels would you say it "gets better" on? Because then I know which need work. But thank you for playing!
Now, I didn't want to post unless I actually had something to say, and now I do. I spent two days learning how to 3d model and then actually modeling. All the cool kids are doing it, so I figure I need to as well.
The Abyssal Gaze got a major aesthetic upgrade. Although now it kinda looks like a Bane/Power Rangers mask. And it is CLEARLY a very practical helmet. Provides great protection against people punching you in the face. Anyway, there are now 5 custom textures/models. One for each spell, one for the fireball, and one for the Abyssal Gaze. The thing in my hand for that picture is actually a snowball, but it kinda makes my hand look like it's glowing, so I like it. And that texture plus the one for the fireball are animated.
Also, I got Curse Premium... and I have no idea how... But apparently it lets me break Net Neutrality in my favor.
Thank you. To be honest, I didn't think I'd get this out before 1.9 ruined it all. Although, maybe it was me over estimating the speed of Mojang.

I only used the grail in the final battle. I'm not sure though whether it glitched out of my inventory and was blown up or something, or it just didn't come back (though I think it's the latter of the two). I will have to try the map as-is though, just for the sake of debugging. As for the "gets better" part, I was referring to the second level onward (activating chat and mechanics with pressure plates really doesn't leave a good first impression, even though you stopped using them after that). Also, I forgot a glitch about the mage portal in the final level. All 4 of the others worked, but the mage one teleported me back almost as soon as I entered.
Well, I'm doing another playthrough just to check for additional really tiny bugs that no one cares about. To give you an idea, I listed the absence of a period on my list. Heheh, talk about critical.

I've fixed some bugs. I'm not entirely sure if the Grail bug is fixed because it was working for me. And yes, I put the period at the end of that sentence. Next up, I think I'll do some testing to make the Technomancer's Sniper more interesting. What's cooler than 'guns'? Guns that shoot lasers!

Oh! There's something I totally forgot to mention! A while ago, the Minecraft Traveler (they asked for me to not use their MCforums name) was asking around here for a map to base a book off of. Like, an actual Kindle novel. On actual Amazon. I offered up mine, said a bunch of the super secret story stuff via PM, and here it is. It's actually pretty good.
Now, the story has gone through some changes between the time I told the writer the plans and me posting the official map, so there are going to be some discrepancies. Not like it particularly matters though.

Sorry I haven't been able to give much commentary on this because school started up. Seems like Druid and Technomancer are the least popular, so maybe I need to work on making their spells cooler. Although, it's a tiny sample size, so it's probably just variance.

I believe I can tell you why those two are the least popular. Druid, though very practical for combat, seems very plain for a game full of strange yet epic magic abilities. Technomancer, on the other hand, is more support-based, so it's harder to play solo (which is how i'm guessing most will play this map).

I just downloaded and started playing this map, and so far it's great! However, i'm kind of stuck on something. I don't know if I'm stupid or i missed something, whenever I go into the room behind the waterfall with the lava and the villager, nothing happens, and I have to kill myself to get out. How am I supposed to progress?
Also, there's a bit of exposed redstone there:

I switched gamemodes and when I looked into the redstone, I found that a piece of redstone was missing. Also, one of the command blocks was blank. I'm not sure what that is supposed to do. Could you please fix that?

This is one of the most unique maps I've seen in a while. Good job! This is one of the only maps I will go back and play, all the different classes will keep me busy for a while.
Now I may just be stupid but In Techletia what is the boss and how do I get to it? And If it is the Slime Monstrosity, I already beat it so what now? no new text displayed and I scanned over the entire city and pushed every button and I already found Scuti so what the heck do I do?

If you've repaired enough solar panels for the gates to open, then there should be another area around (120, -510), the gate having been opened from the other solar panels being repaired. There should be a fourth solar panel in that area to repair, and when you repair it, you'll get some text. From there, it should be simple enough to figure out what to do.

I hate it when I miss tiny things like that. If you still have the world file, do /setblock 1215 11 25 air . If you want to force it to skip that event. I fixed it now though. The widget version might take a little while to be approved.
And yes, once you trigger three solar panels, the doors open and you can get to the last one.
I wanted at least one class to be somewhat melee focused for people who didn't want to use the magic system too much. Based on the poll, the most popular class is... Dragon Acolyte. I kinda expected that. Draconic Rush is the spell I'm most proud of.
I'll have a little informal poll here. Which do you think is more important? Having lots of possible classes, or each class having lots of spells? I could do a more major update and give each class a fourth spell, not counting the ultimate.

I would recommend adding a fourth spell for each class. As you were saying about druid and technomancer not being played, you could add something a bit less support-based for techno, and something a bit more interesting for druid. As far as the other classes go, they are already pretty cool in their own ways, so an extra spell would just make them cooler!
PS: I wonder what kind of extra spell would be done for the "secret class" (the game-breaking one you put out on april fools) XD.

Downloading the map now to try out. I am so excited for it! Also, if I were you, instead of using AdFly, I would recommend using AdFocus. They pay up to $6.70/1,000 clicks.
Features:
However, you take some recoil fall damage
and it doesn't work against Fairy type enemies. Their wand spell fires a small projectile a short distance. After five seconds, you will teleport to it in a little explosion. Dragon Acolytes tend to be slightly better in groups because they have passives that can buff allies, but you're perfectly able to play it solo.Technomancer < Druid < Dragon Acolyte < Cleric < Mage
Now, there seems to be a high correlation between the number of pictures a map has on its tread and how successful it is, and because correlation ALWAYS implies causation...

Yes, I know, Adfly. I'm so greedy. I would say it really helps support me, but it doesn't. Although, something I've wanted to do for a long time is actually try to use a map to raise money for charity. So there you go, clicking on one of the above links donates up to .2257 cents to

Or, for people who want to use the widget...

Awesome! I really enjoyed the alpha version and can't wait to play this! Looks amazing!

My life in a nutshell.
So I just finished the full version.
(This is mainly here for Talist, but anyone who has either played the map or hasn't played but wants spoilers can read it (don't read this if you don't want any spoilers)).
Thank you. To be honest, I didn't think I'd get this out before 1.9 ruined it all. Although, maybe it was me over estimating the speed of Mojang.
Responses to bugs/suggestions
- Hm...

Ok. This sounds epic, and looks cool. I will download it straight away!

It's actually pretty good.
http://www.amazon.com/Minecraft-Diary-Traveler-Minecraftia-Unofficial-ebook/dp/B0118LHX36
Now, the story has gone through some changes between the time I told the writer the plans and me posting the official map, so there are going to be some discrepancies. Not like it particularly matters though.

This is amazing. Good job!

Hi!
Everyone shall perish... in the end
I switched gamemodes and when I looked into the redstone, I found that a piece of redstone was missing. Also, one of the command blocks was blank. I'm not sure what that is supposed to do. Could you please fix that?
Everyone shall perish... in the end
