An Important Notes book is given to all players at game start in addition to Tip notes and verbal explanations given as new things are discovered.
The buttons may be slow or fail if there is a great deal of lag especially in multiplayer. Reloading the map and sometimes re-summoning the Town Hall can temporally correct glitches. Their is however a small intended delay that greatly reduces memory demand as one of many optimizations exclusive to this map. This same random delay is applied to all books.
The zombies were likely killed by another source like a doorway or a villager shop thrown potion. I actually did not think to mention in game that doors kill zombies since it is a common occurrence. It is to compensate for Mojang's coding errors allowing zombies to attack villagers through closed doors. I will add a note.
