You're stranded on an island with nothing but a book to keep you company. What will you do? Where will you go? Will you solve the mysteries of the book or will you wander aimlessly in search of company? It is up for you to decide on Riddle Island.
You're an ex-military who managed to get on the wrong side of a very dangerous group of people. They attacked you on a cruise ship and threw you overboard during the night. Now you're stranded on an island and your only hope of survival is to create a beacon powerful enough to signal for help.
With no signs of wildlife in the surrounding area - you need to get off the island in search of food and materials. Luckily some driftwood washed up shore. You found a book amongst the sticks. You can make a makeshift boat with the driftwood - and there is something strange about this book...
When you need to take a break from working - you read through the book. The riddles are a good challenge to keep your mind off the dire situation at hand. You begin to wonder if there is something more to these riddles...
Make a boat.
Find the tree.
Make a wooden tool.
Make a stone tool.
Make an iron tool.
Make a diamond tool.
Make a Nether Portal.
Make a semi-automated wheat farm.
Make a house out of brick and glass.
Create a cobblestone generator.
Journey to the Summit of the Volcano.
Find the Nether Star.
Create a Beacon. Find the End Portal. -- Not in this version of the map. Will be added along with two additional islands later on.
Below the ocean are caves with resources and chasms and such that ruin the goal of the map. Sometimes the ocean is kind of shallow and with the use of a sign or a bit of ingenuinty you can get down there. You can also dig straight down on an island and start gathering resources like that... that will be fixed by making 4 layers down anywhere into Bedrock at a later date. Likewise, the internal structure of everything is dirt. In some areas it should be stone.
Are the riddles too easy? Are some too hard? Did you have any issues creating something? Do you feel there is something I left out? Is coal a bit too easy to get? Did you find the Nether Star yet?
I'd love to hear some feedback so I can improve on aspects of the map and make it a bit more interesting or unique to play. I would also appreciate anyone who leaves some feedback on "map depth". Changes to the map that don't "add" anything but may make it more interesting or having more of a story behind it. For example...
Would you rather cut a tree or a shipwrecked boat?
Would you rather there be several islands with statues/objects even if the islands serve no other purpose and may provide a "cheap means" of resources such as planks, stone, or wool?
Would you mind the concept of "an abandoned civilization" with half-destroyed buildings, a walkway up the volcano, and other changes to portray the idea being added?
Bryan is right.Adventure maps would be great...but I'm also very fond of surviving.I also love it when I find posts like this.I mean with all the screenshots, introduction, story and goals this map is SOOOOO complete..By the way,if you would like to,please make an adventure map.
Wow! Up to 66 downloads. I wasn't expecting over 20... let alone over 50!
For those who may record Let's Plays! I ask that you wait for the more "polished" world. Although I'd love to hear any and all feedback you have regarding the riddles, the gameplay concept, difficulty of finding the Nether Star (EG: Should it have a riddle as well?) and if you would like it to have a bit more of an "adventure" feel.
A shipwreck at the bottom of a lake.
An ancient civilization that have left many riddles and clues among their ruins.
Several islands each with their own riddles to be discovered for extremely small, resource packed islands.
Some riddles being torn into several pages that must be found - scattered across the islands. For example, to get the iron island's riddle you now have to journey to the coal island and gather several of the pages that have been scattered around the island rather than being given a Big Book Ol' Riddles
Many of these things can be added when I get more time to work on the map - and especially iff I can figure out how MCEdit works or if SPC decides it wants to let me use the wand tools to make selections, copy/paste, replace blocks, etc.
Just an update on the progress of this map. We've taken the concept and adapted it to an 'escape' map. It's currently in-the-works. The current map has been postponed until we get MCEdit to work - or something similar to SPC. Building the resources needed for a survival map by hand and trying to balance that is extremely difficult.
We've taken the riddle concept and applied it to a puzzle/survival/escape-the-"maze" sort of map.
