“People always talk about how hard it can be to remember things - where they left their keys, or the name of an acquaintance - but no one ever talks about how much effort we put into forgetting. I am exhausted from the effort to forget... There are things that have to be forgotten if you want to go on living.”

Despairing Insanity by wacky3zaybxc
Welcome to my first CTM-style map, Despairing Insanity! This map goes into, what we would call, the "Complete the Monument" map genre, popularized by the user Vechs, and you can see his maps HERE. This map comes in multiple variants, those each in different modes, as you can read below, each suited for newbies and veterans alike.
My maps aren't just Linear Branching, which means you go to different checkpoints, where each leads to about 3 objectives, or just Open World, where exploration is the key factor, no. Just to make you rage more, I've made my maps interestingly strange; one, a hybrid of Linear Branching and Open World, allowing those who like both of these worlds to join in a PARTYYYYYYYYYYY; another, using command blocks for an Infinity map, going in a perpetual loop until you finish the course (for clarification, this is going to be used in my Christmas map, not the main Despairing Insanity one).
Yeah.
This map uses the same rules as most CTM maps, but make sure to read the Rules to know if what the heck you plan to do is permissible. xD
Wool and Records (plus the occasional Bonus Objectives) are the objectives for my maps, making a large objective of 22 things to find, leaving you with hours of fun (dying). Each of these represent memories of a past time, with each world you step into the decisive factor in whether or not you can remember it.
I hope you enjoy my maps, but as always, go die in a fire.
The Maps
Despairing Insanity Version 0.6 (For 1.7.4+) Linear-Branching/Open World Difficulty: Random/Increasing
Spawn Difficulty: Easy [Regular Variant], Impossible [Insane Variant]
There is currently a bug with the Extra Objective redstone in the Memory Lock. I'm really busy right now with Christmas stuff (and that's a really lame excuse ), so I probably won't get to fixing it for a while. Since you don't get any rewards for the Extra Objectives, I'm not too concerned with it right now; just place the blocks in. Thank you!

Ooo, and figure out how to make the Blindness potion effect work; I think some things in Optifine disable it (maybe Fog setting? I don't know.). It's really important in later parts of the map if you want to play a TRUE Despairing Insanity experience. <3
Welcome to my first CTM-style map, Despairing Insanity! This map comes in multiple variants, those each in different modes, as you can read below, each suited for newbies and veterans alike. For fun, I've added custom spawners, plus in a moment of inspiration, custom beacons that make the Px4 more fun. You'll know what I mean when you get there.
This map is meant to play with your mind a bit. Don't be confused on why I give you a ton of stuff at the beginning, but I won't spoil anything. <3
And a little mind-blower: this map is both Linear-Branching and Open World at the same time.
This is a set of three maps that I've created for the Wintery people, or Christmas if you celebrate that sort of thing. I'll release three of them over the December of 2012.
These maps will make you hate Christmas. <3

RFW Parting Ways for Multiplayer (For 1.4+) Multiplayer PVP
Difficulty: Medium
Spawn Difficulty: n/a
This is my first RFW (Race For Wool) map that I've created. This map was released first on its own thread before Despairing Insanity, however, I've decided to stick the map in my main thread also. With a 30-second respawn timer, plus compatibility with AutoReferee, a Bukkit plugin used to create completely fair matches without the need for other players to watch, this map will provide buckets of fun for both teams, win or lose.
Insanity Maps Standard Rules:
1) Find and complete the Memory Lock.
2) Find wool and records in fleecy boxes and music tunnels scattered around the map. DO NOT use dyes or spider string for wools, or use records dropped by Creepers shot by Skeletons!
3) You may craft the Iron, Gold, and Diamond blocks.
4) Use at least Easy difficulty, and never Peaceful. This map is balanced around Normal difficulty, so use Easy if you're stuck, or Hard if you really want to die.
5) Do not leave the boundaries of the map and go into normally generated Minecraft terrain, which in my maps is flatland. If you find flatland, go back, and make sure to leave a notice on the forums so I can fix it in a newer version.
6) Do anything to survive. This allows the placing, breaking, and crafting of blocks or tools, etc. However, read rule 8 for more information on this rule in the Memory Lock.
7) You may use spider string wool and sheep wool to craft beds and other items, but not for the Memory Lock.
8) Do not place or break any blocks within the Memory Lock boundaries, which does not include the standard "break" room put before the Lock. Only place Wool where it should go, as certain things are activated when you place each Wool. (TIP: After getting a Wool or a Record, bring it back to the Lock for special loot!)
9) When you choose to rage quit the map, I'm not responsible for any emotional damages done due to the insanity.
Don't know how to play? The Insanity Maps are sort of like playing Minecraft normally, but it's more difficult and you have a long-term goal to work towards, which in this case, is completing the Memory Lock. Also you may find yourself in some unusual terrain, however, some things might not be as they seem.
Difficulty System and Extra Ailments:
To help you guys choose the map that's right for you (but all of them are demented, don't get me wrong ), I've made this little doobly-doo to help classify my maps with 3 different systems: Map Style, Difficulty, and Spawn Difficulty.
Map Style: Linear: As straight forward as it can get, there's one way to go, and that's forward. Just chug on. Linear-Branching: Composed of intersections of several areas. From one or more of these branches you will find another intersection, and so on. Open World: The boundaries here are only your curiosity and will to continue. Dungeon: Open world with labeled dungeon sections (e.g. "Dungeon 1", "Dungeon 2", etc.). The dungeon number reflects the difficulty of the challenges within. Hub-Branching: Like Linear-Branching, but with travel only going outward from the spawnpoint, or the hub. Once you reach the end of an area you will be teleported back to the junction where you can travel another path. Time Attack: You versus the clock, you can't stop time, but time will stop you. You'll never actually complete the monument... Single Objective: You have one objective; it's staring you in the face. You can't do it though. <3 Super Mobs: Fire proof zombies? Punch 10 Skeletons? Speed 3 Cave Spiders? Find them all on steroids. Myriad Branching: Structured like a Linear Branching but with the different branches being a different classification (e.g. Boss Battle, Time Attack, etc.). Flipside: If you thought this place was bad enough already, you'll have to go backwards, in reverse, with some extra side effects for fun (used in correlation with Time Attack).
Difficultly: How hard the map is overall.
Easy: Like eating sponge cake. Medium: Like eating sponge cake...but with tiny needles sticking out. Hard: Like eating sponge cake...but with tiny needles sticking out that are on fire. Insane: Like eating sponge cake...but nothing like eating sponge cake. Probably won't finish it. Random: Each main area of a map has a totally random difficulty. Increasing: The farther into the map we get, the harder the map becomes.
Spawn Difficulty: Not to be confused with regular difficulty.
Easy - Die from the madness? It's ok, you get to respawn.
Medium - Sleeping is helpful, as we can store your memories somewhere. Otherwise, if you don't have a bed spawn set, you'll be lost in the darkness forever.
Hard - The boundaries are only cracked at major points. You can only set your spawn at Intersections. (No beds are allowed here.)
Impossible Just For My Enjoyment - The boundaries are too powerful. You have one chance, and then it's GAME OVER. (No beds are allowed here.)
Client Modification Rules:
I use Vanilla Minecraft for gameplay, and I recommend it for this map. Mods that impact gameplay functions are technically cheating, and the Insanity doesn't really take kindly to that.
However, some modifications are fine to use for this map:
- Mods that make your hand-held torch give light LIKE A LANTERNNNNN (which honestly, I have no idea why it's not in the game right now)
- Mods that don't affect the gameplay. (Graphic tweaks, UI tweaks, etc.)

I started playing through your map, and so far, it looks really nice. The opening area as well as the intersection 1 areas were pleasing to the eye. The monument is new, I've never seen anything like it before. The block combinations really pop. I started by going to the Pauhular(?) Caverns. The spawners under the stairs were a pain, but I got them. Now, moving through the area, there are a large number of natural spawns. Was this intended? What difficulty did you aim for in this map? Looking good so far, I will keep you posted!

Edit: I've put what I've said in a Spoiler because some people might think it as a bit of a walky throughy of some of the areas of the map. Feel free to look at it if you want though.
Thanks for the feedback. I've played through this map quite a bit myself, and I think it is somewhat of a challenge as you start, especially in that area. I do like it that way, however, but I'm planning to come out with a slightly easier version of the map in the future, if those people who like that sort of thing want it (like a bit more lighting, etc.) The Palauth Caverns, the area you mentioned, is meant to have natural spawns, rather than the more conventional spawner idea, which is used in most other parts of the map. I've designed it that way so you more concentrate on lighting up the area, rather than finding spawners and just destroying them. The idea behind that is to reduce the amount of coal I supplied in the spawn area, The Bridge of Despair, which was supplied to create a "false hope" in the player, and to have the player look for some coal deposits I've left in the map. There are a few spawners that have been placed in the Palauth Caverns, however, they're not really that much of a problem, as lighting up the area usually can take care of it. As I was testing the map, I was playing around with the glowstone lighting in that area, since I felt that, in certain cases, the amount of spawns were crazy hard, and that when it was lit up, it was way too easy to get to the waterfalls. Right now, I'm pleased with the lighting in that area.
To answer your second question, I've tried to create it with twists. Some areas, you'll find to be crazy easy, and some areas, you'll think are impossible, though most of the crazy areas have hidden things that you can easily bypass (if you've gotten to Intersection 2, see The Descents of Insanity and Death To Dine: Part 1). I've done this so you can't expect what will really happen in each area, however, I've created numerous traps along the way, which will probably make you rage quit the map. Overall, I'd say that the map does get harder as you play along, and is more suited for a veteran CTM player, though new players to the genre could probably do a good portion of the map, but I'd not expect them to finish the Memory Lock (but don't let that freak you out xD).
Once again, thanks for the feedback; it helps me make my maps better.
Oooh I can tell this is going to get big. It's one of those good maps by a new mapmaker. These go far.
I'm insanely busy, what with IRL, mapmaking, and beta testing maps, but I might try and play this sometime.
Just a tip: you should probably change those pictures all to default textures, and try and increase the resolution. They look a bit pixell-y right now in their current resolution. Also, if it really is a 22-objective, large map, you might want to take screenshots of later areas, which probably look cooler. (I understand, being a fellow mapmaker, that you don't want to give too much away of later areas, but it's verrrry important to draw people in with the screenshots).

Thanks for the tip! I've been taking some screenshots in default textures. I'll probably stop procrastinating in about 2 minutes and decide to finally upload them. xD
Very good... not too much obvious mcedit uses... and very fun! Good job!
Yeah. Actually, I only used MCedit for creating the huge block of stone when I first started the map, and then for creating bedrock walls between areas I didn't want bypassable. I used a combination of WorldEdit and VoxelSniper to create this map.
I like the changes to the OP. They show off the map a lot better as well as give more information. Unfortunately, I'm pretty busy right now, so I won't have a massive amount of time to play the map, but I'm looking forward to the chance to delve more deeply and more greedily.

Cool. I'm glad you liked the changes, and I like them too. xD
I was making a let's play of this map (which i have absolutly no intention of finishing) and i came across a pretty big bug. I wrapped up the video in order to upload it as quickly as i can. It seems that half the signs are blanked out:
Hey, I was only able to recreate your problem only once, but doing a reload of the map (closing the map and going back in) seemed to solve the problem. I'm trying to figure out what's going on, but I think that's all you need to do. If that happens, just reload the map. I'll try to upload a new version that doesn't involve having to reload the map.
EDIT: I've added your video to the Let's Play section of the OP.
