Nobody knows more than I do what this map owes to Skyblock. Oceanblock literally would not exist without it. However, one of the best parts about Oceanblock is it's NOT Skyblock and doesn't try to be. It's a different map.
8hu5rust, I do understand your point of view but I must respectfully disagree with it. Oceanblock is what it is and part of what it is, is a whole ton of potential squeezed into a tiny little package. Things may move around but I doubt they'll get any less crowded in future versions.
Ok, here's my opnion of what has been talked about since my last post...I was a rabid fan of skyblock, but I do agree that is very old, and quite out-dated, Oceanblock however is quite up-to-date, but in no way an "imitation" of skyblock, it may have been inspired by skyblock, but its 100% different from skyblock...Oceanblock has a TON more potential...and can easily be changed and updated to keep up with current versions of minecraft without changing the theme of the map. That, in itself is what makes the map great! 5thHorseman did an amazing job in designing the map and maintaining it...keeping it up to date and though its very limited at the start...its not "too" limited as to keep you from enjoying any features of vanilla minecraft...as in skyblock you can't get any ores...so all you have is limited dirt and a TON of cobblestone...not much else...
on the topic of episode length and content...I myself try to keep the episodes within 30 minutes...that way its like watching a show on TV though there are alot of shows with an hour length...but no one takes into account the commercials...a 30 episode is actually like 24 mintues long with 6 minutes of commercials...and an hour long episode is like 48 minutes with 12 minutes of commercials...and this seems to be a standard with alot of the famous youtubers, and alot of people have a short attention span so having episodes ~30 minutes~ keeps their attention without making anyone bored or whatnot. And for content, I do agree that building things that wasn't planned out by the video maker in an LP is unwise..which is why I try to tell my viewers what I plan to do off-camera...and also I tend to do more "speed-runs" when comes to building or harvesting...just so the viewers can still see it happen...But like I did with mining the obsidian...it was better to say "i'm going to mine this obsidian" cut the video feed...then start recording again after, because who really wants to see about a minutes worth of someone mining obsidian...lol quite boring, and not even interesting in a "speed-run" when I get a new headset, I'll start my series back up, and I do have some exciting plans for it too!
And Hillhome...here is your information you wanted...
On the "ceiling" of the nether you will find a layer of glowstone, and a layer of netherrack above that, and according to 5thhorseman, there should have been a layer of soul sand there too, but theres not...above the netherrack is like a TON of bedrock...(I made a creative mode copy of the map to look around...) Since you are do a livestream, I thought I'd tell you so you don't waste footage on something you might not want up there...as I prefer jack-o-lanterns to glowstone as its a renewable resource. But with 1.5 and turning netherrack into nether brick, which I love, as I think nether brick looks awesome (I like the color and design of it)

That's a pretty good point, I appreciate when I can watch a fast-forward of a large build instead of a cut and resume. I'll have to see if Windows Movie Maker can do something like that for my Let's play...

That's a good point, a further idea for an OceanBlock update once Minecraft 1.5 is out:
That top layer sandwich would also be the perfect place to include the new block, Nether Quartz Ore. New gadgets, new sexy building material

yes, thats what I'm using for my video editing...though there are people that say "don't use windows movie maker for editing"...my say is "why not?" why pay $$$ on video editing software when movie maker is free and works perfectly fine!

One more thing that's nice about the "fast forward through this mundane task" idea: no matter what happens, you have it recorded.
So if you encounter a problem (creeper, unexpected fall, etc), then you can show it instead of just saying "while I had the recording stopped, I was killed by a creeper that dropped on my head from the jungle tree".
I just hit that issue on my map: I had the recording stopped, but almost drowned trying to rescue a villager who glitched through the half-slab floors of the village (don't make your village floor out of top-half-slabs, by the way). It isn't recorded, so I'll have to just tell the story once I start recording again.

You hit the nail on the head...I made that mistake as well, and I think that's what caused the iron golems to attack me in one episode...my villager area was full of top half slabs...and 2 villagers fell through and were floating in the water underneath...but since there was air under there, they weren't drowning, but as I was trying to get them out, I think I struck them once or twice trying to get them out from under the "village" and that angered the iron golems, so to get the golems nice again, I dropped the golem into the water and got rid of most of my villagers except the ones I've traded with before and those that had awesome trades, and didn't want to get rid of...and that fixed the iron golem killing me problem...sadly I didn't record all this. But I'm fairly new at recording videos, so I'm learning as I go how to make good LP videos.
On a different topic, I fixed the lag problem from recording with fraps...and my next videos shouldn't lag anymore...somehow my computer put itself in power saver mode, so when I started recording with fraps...which increased CPU usage, the computer cut down my FPS to "save power", so I changed my settings around and now it shouldn't lag anymore...I even tested it with a new video that I put on my channel, just a simple 2 minute video showing a automatic/manual harvesting switch to a Iron Golem farm designed by Docm77.
...the perfect place to include the new block, Nether Quartz Ore. New gadgets, new sexy building material
I'll probably put some on the starting island (maybe even in place of the brick, now that you can cook your own) but yeah, that's exactly where the rest will go Hopefully I won't forget
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
I see you have sheep and pigs. I just got 2 cows and you can hear the excitement in my voice when I saw them. I'm encoding the video now and hope to have it uploaded in the morning.
I'm pretty sure nobody (but me) has gotten there yet, at least hasn't mentioned it.
The End is sadly just an End island, not custom at all. Making it really small would essentially make it impossible.
I haven't gotten there in oceanblock yet, but unless its been fixed, the ender dragon is totally easy to beat, there's been times where (s)he dived bombed me and did no damage...I honestly hope (s)he has been fixed, as being bugged, freaking wither skeletons and the wither itself makes the ender dragon look like a braindead zombie...but ya, editing the end realm would ruin the ender dragon fight as you have to dodge the endless amounts of endermen, destroy the ender beacons and kill the dragon, and all that is kinda impossible on a tiny island similar to nether/overworld.
but on the other hand, I should be getting a new headset within the next couple days, so I'll be recording the next episode of my LP soon...I'm excited as I want to play it some more but I don't want to do much off-camera...lol
I'll probably put some on the starting island (maybe even in place of the brick, now that you can cook your own) but yeah, that's exactly where the rest will go Hopefully I won't forget
and maybe somehow put some more hidden some where, as its also a beautiful building block also...though not totally essential to survival so alot of it won't hurt!
I activated my end portal tonight on stream, started working on my house (on top of some brown mushrooms), and mined the diamonds. Along with getting the rest of the wool and all the potions except regeneration. On that note 5thHorseman I love/hate you. I despise Ghasts in general but to try to build a "Ghast Spawner" which is basically just a "Nether Mob Arena" is going to suck. I anticipate dying many times trying to get those darn tears!
My plan is simple but resource intensive. Build a giant room from the lava level up to the roof. Wait. Kill whatever shows up and hopefully get two Ghast Tears to drop at some point. Following that to break the sides so lava flows in preventing further spawns of pigmen and the Ghasts would be trapped in that room basically. That's the idea at least. As to if it actually works well...
I doubt it. Regeneration potions? really!?
Other than that whole regen potion fiasco waiting for me I just need to finish my house and build an area for slimes to spawn and optionally (and most likely) to move my "library" building over a bit for aesthetic reasons. I'll drop some pics of my future home tomorrow if I get time!
I seriously considered making the regeneration potions a bonus goal. I also seriously considered making you only have to make 3 of them. Then I said, "naaah."
I've recorded several episodes ahead, so it won't be up for a little while yet, but last night while recording there was an "unfortunate zombie-related incident" in my village
Actually I don't know yet if I'll do it, or how I'll do it. But it's an intriguing idea.
well thats the only way I can think of to make custom end portal locations...as they can't be moved, nor destroyed once placed. (unless of course you're in creative mode lol)
Or you could be really evil and make it a villager trade...like a few emeralds for an end portal block.
I don't know, but I'm rather leery of hacking villager trades for special items. One little mistake (zombie siege, drowning, etc.) and the whole map is unfinishable. Much better (in my opinion) to plant special chests in hard to get to locations (like under water or in the Nether). Not so keen on high altitude caches, but that's just me.

I'm pretty sure that's the point...5th horseman wants it to be tough, so if he actually does do that, you'll have to be extra careful to not let that villager die...or you may need to restart the map!

I think he is asking for it to be deeper than 1 block. I kind of wish it was 1 up from bedrock so I could do a big drop into it from the island.
Edit: after reading this again I think he might not be playing v4.0.

Not 4, no. I've been reading this thread and, up til now, have not seen any discussion of the end.
So ... what does the end island look like?

Looking good! You should embed your image like I did in the quote. Just surround it in IMG tags like so:
