I built a slimetrap which works on the small square of swampland at sea level.
The big slimes can only spawn on 3x3 grass with 3 air cubes above it.
I enclosed the grassy swampland square in a box 3 blocks high inside and I have running water inside it on a side to push the mobs down 23 blocks like a classic mob trap. I used a hopper and a chest downstairs to collect the mobs drops. I also placed two redstone lamps in the walls of the box with levers outside.
When I hear the sound of a slime, I turn the redstone lamps on so no more mobs will spawn, I wait a bit till the mobs have been swiped down. If the slime is big it cannot follow the water which is only 2 blocks wide. I just remove one block off the wall and hit it, put the block back and let the smaller slimes be swiped down too.
Then I get down and finish off the small slimes and collect the drops from the chest.
I suppose that the slimes are able to spawn because of the redstone lamps. I only turn them off when I want the trap to work.
Do you get very many Enderman? I wish I knew where a slime chunk was. I tried to build a couple of spawn pads down above the bedrock, but they must not be slime chunks.

Post #279 (page 14 for me) in this thread gives a slime chunk map in the spoiler. I'm in the process of expanding my underwater area to try slime farming there. If I place a layer of wood on the bedrock, will the slimes spawn there? (Not sure if I'm too close to the bedrock or not.) I know I need to keep the area well lit for the slimes to spawn.
Just require one piece each of chain, gold, iron, and diamond. And then another full set of dyed leather armor
Yep, that sounds fair. You can collect chain and diamond items by whatever means you can (rare drop, villager trade), then fill in the other two slots using constructed armor of iron and gold.

I think that you just have to have it up off the bedrock (and lit up, and in a slime chunk) for slimes to spawn.
The other factor is that, ideally, you should be 24-32 blocks away, which is only about half way up the ladder. I made a small platform to the side of my ladder where I can stop and wait, but haven't yet gotten any slimes down below.

I did the same thing with the platform (level 30) and have no slimes after hours of trying. I looked at that post and I have parts of 2 slime chunks (one is 8x8 and the other one is almost the whole chunk). I put wood and jack-o-lanterns down and no spawns. That is really strange. Is it cheating to use the slime chunk map?
This has got to be one of the favorites in terms of Minecraft survival maps just because it's got a more interesting idea behind it with an island surrounded by the various species of trees.
So do you think they wouldn't spawn way down on the bottom of the ocean because it was too close to bedrock? You clearly had a slime chunk, based on the results you got in this episode.
I really like what you've built there, very nice mechanism to funnel them to the surface. I'm still not quite clear how big slimes get broken down into small ones, though. And slimes can climb dry ladders?
So to review: to get slimes on this challenge map, we need to do one of two things:
1. On a slime chunk, build a 3-high slime spawning platform somewhere between level 2 and level 40 (the lower bound is uncertain at this point, since we seem to be unable to spawn then on blocks placed on bedrock). This platform should be well-lit, preferably with pumpkins instead of torches, so you aren't blocking slimes spawning on that spot. Awesome water-channel delivery method optional but recommended
2. In the swamp biome, build a dark mob spawning area. Works good, but you have a method for handling the other hostile mobs that will also spawn there. Redstone lamp and water-channel killing system optional but awesome :). I had a couple of questions about this that the wiki doesn't seem to answer: Does this need to be on grass? Do they only spawn "at night", as the wiki says, or can they spawn during the day inside a dark room? If the room is 3-high, I assume I will have to deal with enderman?

Thanks Mega!
I think they would not spawn on the bottom because it might have something to do with the map being a "Superflat" world. But that is just a guess on my part.
The 3x3 and 2x2 slimes die because they drown in the 3x3 block of water. When a 3x3 slime dies he breaks into 2x2's. Those 2x2's die and break into 1x1's that drop through the fence system and get funneled to the top.
1x1 slimes can climb ladders if they have a block behind them. That is why the 1x1 tube with ladders in it works perfect.
Slime's can not spawn on torches. If you put a torch down it will limit the spawning area by a lot. You have to use jack-o-lanterns.
So a few results from some some slime research and testing I did, much of it from the wiki, and this forum thread:
Slimes can, in fact, spawn on blocks placed directly on bedrock (I tested planks and pumpkins)
Our map does contain 2 diagonal slime chunks, centered on the original island. I've listed the coordinates in a spoiler tag below.
Slimes in a slime chunk can spawn up to level 39. Don't make your slime spawner any higher than that
Slimes in a swampland biome can only spawn on levels 51-69
Other hostile mobs will still spawn more often than slimes in a dark swampland biome. You will need some method for handling them.
According to , slimes don't de-spawn like other mobs when you are further away than 32 blocks (but still within 128)
Despite all this good data, I still haven't had any slimes spawn in my ocean-floor area. I have fully cleared out, platformed, and lit up one of the two slime chunks. I think they are just that much more rare than other mob spawns. I wonder if temporarily shutting off my main mob/xp farm might help.
Here are the coordinates for the 2 slime chunks closest to the island (this was posted earlier in the thread, but I did manually confirm it, on a new custom flatland using the same seed):
slime chunk one: (x=272, z=576) to (x=288, z=592)
slime chunk two: (x=288, z=592) to (x=304, z=608)
These are diagonal to each other, the corner where they touch is the center-point of the original island.
Yeah the surface slimes (and wolves) are hampered by too-small biomes. I think I'll go back to the 16x16 biomes in the next version, or even in version 4.1.
I'm considering forking OceanBlock, and making 5.0 drastically different while making 4.1 the same as 4.0 with a couple bug fixes and the addition of anything in the Redstone update.

Yeah, larger biomes might be handy. Is that using the current 4 biomes? Or are you still thinking about swapping the desert for the mushroom biome (and eliminating red mushrooms from the initial island, since you can get them off of mooshrooms)?
Based on the fact that the last weekly snapshot didn't have any new items or features, we might be getting closer to a 1.5 release. Other than adding some Nether Quartz and maybe adding some challenges that require a hopper, I'm not sure what other changes this might bring to the map.

Sounds fair to me honestly

That is a really great room. You sure did a good job with it.
Thank you! I like the map too

Did you die before resting in the bed?
My friends and I began the map without the island in sight. We've been searching for the island for a while.
If you watch my video at the end I have F3 up with the coordinates. Around the 33 min mark.
