Since in 1.5 you can bake netherrack into nether brick (and thereby gain enough bricks to make nether brick blocks) can you provide us enough netherrack to build a spawning pad for wither skeletons? I THINK they spawn on nether brick so if you had a pad large enough you should be able (in theory) to build a wither skelton spawning area and thereby fight the wither for an extra challenge or two.

Just curious if that works
I take it, that you haven't found the "hidden" treasures in the nether...I'll give you a hint since i'm such a nice guy...while in the nether, try looking up...(well its a natural reaction in the nether to look up as ghasts love to fly around an shoot a fireball at any nearby human...or any other minecraftian thats not a native nether dweller)
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Wisemen say forgiveness is divine, but never pay full price for late pizza.
It would have taken me a bit less time if I'd have had a bit more resources created when I started working on it but overall it turned out fine. It's a very effective and safe system though not exactly one that's easy on your sword durability. Once I get enough redstone I can add in some pistons up top but I also still need slimeballs for that too really. Enjoy the pictures
Nice. I take it the "floor" is half slabs? What keeps the lava from going in through the wood blocks and making a mess?
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
Just put up Episode 2. It's 54 minutes. Do you guys like longer video's showing the building process or do you prefer shorter one's just showing the builds?

I also just put up my latest (and first in a LOOOOONG time) video!
As to your question, I'd say somewhere in the middle? I hate when an episode starts and there is something completely built that wasn't even hinted at in the previous episode, or for example an episode ends with the guy saying he wants to get some blaze rods and the next video starts and he has 10 of them. Collecting blaze rods is the best (and frequently funniest) part! However, in my video I (again) rebuilt my village and it took about an hour. Instead of doing that, I explained what I was going to do, did it off camera, and popped back on a couple times to show off progress and whenever something interesting happened.
I think that's a good compromise between the two extremes. It means a little extra work, but not much.
Note: I'll still watch your videos no matter how you format them

I see... glowstone. A whole ceiling of glowstone I CBA to build a tower to collect when I can trade emeralds for the bit of it I feel I need for my construction projects. If you want you can spoiler tag what's up there that I'm missing so I can figure if want to go mess with it but I didn't see an official "Kill the Wither" challenge.
With Optifine and connected textures are turned on so that the sides where you can see the lava are just a bunch of glass blocks that look like one long rectangular glass block. The floor is half-slabs on top of the bedrock layer to prevent a bunch of pigmen from spawning in and milling around - which helps prevent me being murdered brutally by them.
Up by the portal I have a bunch of halfblocks too (to force the pigmen to spawn in the drop trap - which I need to update with pistons!). That doesn't negate spawns though as they can still spawn somehow near the base blocks of the portal. So when you are down farming blazes for a bit you'll have 5 - 10 pigmen waiting for you in the overworld. Just be cautious when you go through the portal is all I'm saying xD
To build that spawner I imbibed a LOT of fire resistance potions which allows you to "swim" in lava. Swim in quotes because you don't ever run out of air. I'm still not sure if that's a feature or an oversight after they added a potion that makes you immune to fire damage. Just make sure you can get back to the overworld before your last potion runs out or you will slowly burn to death.
Is there anymore dirt? I only have the dirt the map started with and theres not enough to get all the achievments like the grass and tree farms AND the mycelium at the same time, hopefully im just missing somthing. please help. :|

You're missing something
There is literally an infinite amount of dirt, some of it within 70 blocks of where you started.
Just put up Episode 2. It's 54 minutes. Do you guys like longer video's showing the building process or do you prefer shorter one's just showing the builds?
I like longer episodes but that is just my preference I know it doesn't hold true for everyone. Still that's why I livestream instead of edit video on youtube so everyone gets to see the whole process. Even then there are times I just gather resources "off stream" to save a bit of time (like trading with villagers, getting charcoal, digging up dirt, etc etc). Then I start the night with "So I did [fill in the blank] while off stream this weekend so we could work on the next project which is..."
It works after a fashion. But even in YT vids I prefer longer ones that I can see exactly how people built something or went about completing a project so I want to try something similar I have a frame of reference!
Just some tips for you and your map. The island looks very cluttered. A lot of the fun of skyblock comes from how simplistic it is. You can keep some of the materials, but you should put them in a chest so that the player has to build space for the farms and has to do everything from scratch. It isn't as necessary to have all the materials present as it is for the map to have a challenge and goals. So i suggest you simplify the map and ditch some of the resources for a greater enjoy ability of the map.
In the case of the wither skeleton, what you're going to have to do is move the nether portal to a location where there is a naturally spawning nether fortress. It's not important what block there is, all that matters is that there would have been a nether fortress had it spawned. What i suggest doing is creating a new map until you find one with a nether fortress and then lining up the overworld island with the nether island so that the nether island is where the nether fortress used to be.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't quite agree with you that tossing everything in a chest makes the map better, and every single block is necessary to achieve the goals set out. Some of the blocks as placed are actually *BAD* to have down at the start, and some interfere with others. Cleaning off the island is job #1, and while I could put all of those items in a chest... why? I think the cluttered look gives OceanBlock a unique feel.

I'm definitely going to give that a look-see when I start to work on the next version.

What I'm saying is that you should ditch some of those achevements for a more simplistic game. That's what has made skyblock so popular and survival island such a survival classic. It allows people to use their creativity when they're forced to work with limited resources. Heck, that's what makes Minecraft it's self such a iconic game. It's the fact that you only have cubes to work with, it's such a simplistic game. There's many other similar games that add different mechanics to the gameplay such as guns or different sized blocks. But they're still not as popular as minecraft is. The trick is to balence enjoy-ability with simplicity. If you still don't beleve me, just give it a shot. You could create a seperate download and keep the original and call the new thing hardcore or something. You can come with a whole new set of achevements such as getting animals to spawn or collecting a certain number of leaf blocks ect.
Actually, I like OB survival, much more than skyblock.
There was a variant of Skyblock, implemented as a custom map generation mod, that could permit ALL of the minecraft achievements to be completed. This map actually permits almost all of them itself, and with very little starting blocks.
For the next version: Can you please add in an end portal deep down below the starting island? I don't think it's possible to kill the dragon right now, but I think you can do everything else.
My opinion on skyblock: It's an exercise in patience more than anything.
The idea of no lava, and no cobble stone, for a very long time? That is unique. The whole limited coal, no charcoal, limited torches? I'd probably go nuts :-).

I don't disagree with some of your ideals here, in fact I made some similar arguments a page or so back in a slightly different context. But I'm not sure how that is criticism of this map. Islandblock DOES start with the bare minimum of resources, they are just placed on the island, instead of stuck in chests like Skyblock did.
Yes, Oceanblock has a few more available resources than Skyblock, but that is for 2 very good reasons:
1. Skyblock was created a long time ago, and quite a few new things have been added to the game. Most of these are in OceanBlock.
2. Skyblock doesn't have the capability to generate almost all blocks in the game. Oceanblock does, through clever use of its resources.
I might even make the case that OceanBlock is actually an improvement on the genre of Skyblock, but that's obviously pretty subjective. (I'm saying this as the highest possible compliment, I am a rabid fan of Skyblock, I have invested a huge amount of time in SkyBlock games on both PC and XBox, where you have to craft your own.)
Yes, to get every one of the achievements takes quite a bit of time and effort, but I'm not sure which ones specifically you'd object to. If I might make a suggestion, you could just ignore those that you find unnecessary, and play the level however you like.
For the next version: Can you please add in an end portal deep down below the starting island? I don't think it's possible to kill the dragon right now, but I think you can do everything else.
Have you played this map (v 4.0)? There is an end portal incorporated into the blocks under the island.
I've messed around with a few challenging maps like this in the past but this is the only one to grab me, shake me, and demand I finish all the objectives. I think partly because there are so many things you miss out on in skyblock compared to the number of blocks you can potentially get in ocean block. I loved skyblock, it spawned a bunch of imitators and it is a very well made map.
In the same way I find this is a very well made map that offers me more diverse challenges and I can "go farther" with it. I also found the start - with the balance of resources vs expansion - along with the lack of instantly starting with a cobble gen to be a LOT of fun. Forcing only wooden tools for a while was, IMO, a very smart move. I just prefer the atmosphere of ocean block over the others I've tried out
Just curious if that works
