Might want to increase the amount of lapis, since that is the only way to get blue dye, and if we want to include stained clay and stained glass in the goals, it'll take more blue dye than even using a fortune pick will get you.
If 5thHorseman actually update the map for Minecraft 1.7.2, these things probably will be planned.. It's what we hope!
well with
Nice testing! although with anvils, using an axe to cut down all the leaves can wear out the axe quickly...I might test using an anvil to put Fortune on something without durability like a stick!
In creative mode, you might be able to put Fortune on something unusual like that, but you definitely can't do that in survival mode.
Well, I've tested a bit, and it doesn't appear that the new Dark Oak trees are renewable using the current sapling drop rates.
They give a ton of wood, but in my testing only drop 2-4 saplings per tree, which isn't always enough to re-grow a new tree (growing dark oaks requires 4 saplings, no tree will grow with just one).
After some more extensive testing, I no longer think this is a problem.
I planted 16 dark oak trees in creative, canopies not touching, and knocked out the wood from each, tracking the saplings in 16 different chests. Here are the results, in ascending order:
3 saplings from 3 trees
4 saplings from 1 tree
5 saplings from 3 trees
6 saplings from 4 trees
7 saplings from 2 trees
8 saplings from 1 tree
9 saplings from 2 trees
So from 16 trees, I got 92 saplings (and 6 apples).
That's nearly a stack and a half of saplings, from 64 saplings planted.
So while there are some trees that will give less than 4 saplings (just like there are some normal oak trees that drop no saplings), I think overall a dark oak farm should be sustainable.
In creative mode, you might be able to put Fortune on something unusual like that, but you definitely can't do that in survival mode.
Not impossible, just not the same as Skyblock.
You will be staying with wooden tools and building with planks for quite some time on this map...
Ah, I see, must've been changed since I last messed with enchanted books and anvils...oh well, with an infinite source of iron in this map...(with a little work of course) it shouldn't be a problem to keep an Iron axe with Unbreaking III and Fortune III repaired...especially if you build a decent XP farm.

When can we expect OceanBlock 4.2 with 1.7 updates and hopefully slime and zombie pigman spawning fixed? I really love this map and would love to see it in 1.7 and also with zombie pigman spawning, I don't know how to use world edit so I can't fix it the way you said to. A date would be appreciated, even an update to where you are at would be appreciated. Thanks for making this wonderful map anyways.

PM 5thHorseman to see if he will update the map soon..
Haha no need to pm me. I reply here probably more frequently than I check those
I should have a decent amount of spare time in November, literally starting on the first and going maybe as far as Thanksgiving. I'd be surprised if I didn't have the time to make the new OceanBlock at that time.
I'm thinking currently one of 2 ways. 4.2 is essentially out of the question as there are too many changes in 1.7.x
I'd love to hear opinions on:
1: OceanBlock 5.0, a new island with one of each tree and some Nether changes.
2: OceanChest 1.0, which essentially has all the same resources but they're in a chest floating in the ocean and you spawn on it. Maybe 2 chests, and the other one has the 2 villagers standing on it.

Those two ideas sound interesting. I personally would rather OceanBlock 5.0 over OceanChest 1.0, but would play either regardless. Either way have you solved the problem of slime and zombie pigman not spawning or are you yet to figure out a solution?

I *think* so, but I thought so before so no promises
It's on the list of stuff to check before releasing, but if I simply can't get it I'll be releasing anyway.
The weird thing is, I never had any problems getting either to spawn.

I personally would also have to agree with sticking with Oceanblock...the chest thing is just asking to have the villagers drown while you try to get established...
Anyway...when you make Oceanblock 5.0 just put the "World Spawn" at least 24 blocks away from the Island so the "spawn protection" business that some people are getting (including me, until I fixed it)...Or with some clever Command block usage...you could make some command blocks to use the "set world spawn" command, then have like a repeater (for delayed activation) have some more with the remove block commands to remove the command blocks! Just throwing out an idea there...
And I'm sure you know how to fix zombie pigman spawning...(that is if you still intend on doing the whole surround a very large area in bedrock), you just delete everything outside the bedrock! But my biggest question to you will be in a spoiler tag for those that haven't played the current version very long...
Why do you feel the need to put the Blaze spawner all the way at the very bottom? it makes it very annoying to build a decent blaze farm out of it...

"All the same resources", meaning everything that makes up the current Oceanblock island? Dirt, sand, ores, saplings, mushrooms, obsidian, end portal, grass, mycelium?
Unless you're changing the way the map plays in some more substantial way, I don't see the purpose in requiring the player to pull dirt out of a chest and build the initial island manually, instead of a small island already being there.
Of course, if you did put the obsidian in a chest, that would be a pretty substantial change, since the user could place and light the portal as soon as they got flint and steel, instead of needing a diamond pick like they do now.
I'm sure there is more to your idea than just that, so I'd be interesting in seeing what you had in mind.
I personally would also have to agree with sticking with Oceanblock...the chest thing is just asking to have the villagers drown while you try to get established...
Actually I learned from OceanBlock... 2.0 I think it was... that if left undisturbed the villagers will happily stand on a tiny island forever. I don't know if it'll work with a chest but I don't see why it wouldn't.
But my biggest question to you will be in a spoiler tag for those that haven't played the current version very long...

I'll answer in a spoiler...
Because reasons. Mostly because the Overworld is 64 deep. Plus, you gotta admit that first time you looked down that pit you freaked out. But I could see lowering both, or one, to only 32. I don't like the idea of lowering the overworld that low because of slime spawning.
"All the same resources", meaning everything that makes up the current Oceanblock island? Dirt, sand, ores, saplings, mushrooms, obsidian, end portal, grass, mycelium?
I said "essentially"
But yeah. Except probably obsidian, which would possibly make a layer of the ocean floor, or perhaps a 1x1x10 pillar directly under spawn. So you can't make a nether portal until you get a diamond pick.
Unless you're changing the way the map plays in some more substantial way, I don't see the purpose in requiring the player to pull dirt out of a chest and build the initial island manually, instead of a small island already being there.
The purpose is that they keep adding frickin' trees to Minecraft. 1 was great. Make a block, put a tree on it. 4 was a challenge but sure, 4 sides to a square, 4 trees. Sure there are giant oaks and 2x2 jungle trees but those are abberations. Now there are 6 saplings and over a dozen different tree types. And who knows where it'll go next. OceanHex? OceanNonagon? OceanIcosahedron? I'm being a bit hyperbolic but you see the point, I hope.
I'm sure there is more to your idea than just that, so I'd be interesting in seeing what you had in mind.
Actually there's not much more to it than that. I'd make for a cleaner, more consistent start point and make upgrading to a new version a simple matter of modifying the contents of the chests and possibly the villagers' trades.

Maybe I'm being lazy
Eh, then just stick the extra saplings in a chest, maybe even the Nether chest so players have to work for them. I think keeping the "style" of the starting island is kind of important, so it feels like a new version of the same map, instead of a new map that just happens to play similarly to the old one. Plus, you don't have to do something funny with the end portal and/or obsidian.
How about this: grow oak, birch, and the new acacia tree on the starting island. Then put 4 each of dark oak, jungle, and spruce saplings in the nether chest? (The 3 types that can grow 2x2 trees).
Nah, I'd probably hate that. Getting 4 jungle saplings for giant jungle trees is one of my favorite early game wins.
I've been thinking of splitting the initial block into 2 blocks, one for you and one for the villagers, since they introduced farting (I mean humming) sounds. Maybe put those guys on a small 1x4 island with 2 trees. With them standing there, it shouldn't spawn mobs (See OceanBlock 2.0). Then I could have 5 trees on the main island.
Dunno. Gives me stuff to think about before I get that spare time I'm looking forward to starting on Friday.

That's why I was renaming it However, with the unanimous votes for OceanBlock 5.0, it's clear where I should put my efforts!
Plus, you don't have to do something funny with the end portal and/or obsidian.
True dat. I hadn't figured out an end portal solution. The nether won't be big enough for a Pancake-style mini scavenger hunt for portal frames.
And don't worry, I love giant jungle trees too. You'll be getting a jungle tree in the overworld no matter what I do

Oceanblock doesn't necessarily mean the island has to be block shaped...its just you and a couple villagers on a small island in an endless ocean of a world of blocks! but having a separate Island wouldn't be a bad idea either...btw the 2x2 spruce trees aren't technically a "new" tree, just a way to be bigger larger spruce trees, just like 1x1 jungle trees and 2x2 jungle trees are the same tree...so imo Spruce should be treated the same. So the only "new" trees with its own saplings are Dark Oak and Acacia...
Here an Idea...A tiny island of Podzol (so players have to be careful about digging it up) with the villagers and the 2 new trees, then you can still have the classic 4.1 style island with the 4 trees and item chest! (Idk if you can get the new flowers via bonemeal or not, if u can you could add a couple more biomes....) and getting a snow farm can be more challenging by using the snowless taiga (wolves still spawn here) so the player would have to make a platform in the sky if they want snow!
btw, putting the end portal frame in a chest is interesting...as it allows more creativity for how to build your "island paradise" without having the end portal hindering the design...(just put a note in the signed book with a warning about once placed you can mine it back up)and then you can put more ore like lapis or something where the frame was, since lapis is non-renewable and even with fortune, doesn't give ya much. (and it won't make it easier as its only used as a dye anyways)
This is what I have built up on the Oceanblock multiplayer server. I had completed all the challenges within the first two days so I decided to build and you see the progress so far. The main area you see is the automatic sorting room. Not finished yet as the villagers are rather tight with their redstone.
Okay I've gone from worried that it would happen to resigned that it was inevitable to now able to accept it: I have no desire at all to continue doing anything with Minecraft. It's sad, but I've just moved on. There is not enough time to play every game I want to play and I have to cut some out, and Minecraft - after literally years - is one of those games.
That said, OceanBlock 4.1 in its current state will always be available for download. I have no plans on removing it from the server its on and that server is my own personal site that I have no plans on discontinuing, ever. I will also continue to visit the forum and this thread in particular, of course.
Also, if someone would like to take a try at maintaining the map and bringing it up to the current version, I wholeheartedly support that. I may even play it, eventually
Sorry to anybody who feels led on by this. I truly thought that the past few weeks' of extra spare time would afford me a chance to work on the map, but I've just had 0 desire to do so. And I don't think that will change.
