I - or at least either the current prerelease of Minecraft or the new version of MCEdit - fixed the problem and I've got OceanBlock 4.0 pretty much done. I'm quite happy with it.
As a little teaser, here's the new main island:
I would say IT IS BEUTIFUL

No, I'm fixing a bug that Mojang won't fix. It was never my intention to make death a multi-step process. It's sad that this allows you to essentially skip night, but if you're doing things right you shouldn't HAVE to skip night.
There was a pumpkin on the island when you started.
Animals will RARELY spawn on a patch of grass that is well lit and 24 blocks away (or farther) from you. Your best bet is to make a spawn area, get it grassy, light it up, and ignore it while doing other things. Eventually, animals will spawn.
Then, lure the animals away into pens on the other side of your map. Animals won't spawn if there are too many other animals nearby.
Actually I had animals spawning once or twice per day on the 16x16 grassy area I built.
BTW, unless you fancy chasing after animals all over the ocean, fence your spawning area early. Also, it might be worth killing animals that you have more than two of until you have a pair of each animal you want to keep; by doing this I obtained enough animals to start breeding in a few days. After you get to breeding, there's no need to concern yourself with animal spawning.
edit: I did the killing of extra animals early so I wouldn't have to move the animals from my spawning space. Makes for a slower start with breeding than attracting the animals to the other side of the island, but requires less work - and given that working my 75 trees + 4 Jungle giants tree farm, and expanding my underwater platform beyond 64x64, was work enough, I didn't want to waste much time with the animals early.

a 'bed bug' fix? Sleeping should only be needed to set your spawn point. If you are sleeping to avoid mobs then you've done something wrong.
Only bugs that I have really noticed are the clipping and spawning bugs.
Have you made any modifications to the nether or the end? I'd love to see your blaze spawner solution. Did you make a ghast spawner?
I don't think I'll be expanding in the nether this time - it was a lot of very hazardous work.
I'm so jazzed to start playing the new map.
Did you test at all to see if wolves will spawn in the map's taiga?

Breeding the villagers is one of the most important things. Also a way to kill off useless villagers is very helpful and they breed fast enough to keep you busy.
I lived off of zombie flesh and used the animal meat for trading. Having your 'pasture' in the jungle biome will force you to constantly be on the lookout for ocelots.

I don't know of a "bed bug" in Minecraft. What I was talking about was how if you die and don't have a bed, you spawn at the bottom of the ocean and - unless you're in peaceful mode - can't get to the surface without drowning.

In 1.4 the end is very similar to 1.3's end. The platform's smaller and (I think) a little wider, but the blaze spawner area is pretty much the same.
As to the ghast spawner, no I just make a pillar to spawn zombie pigmen, so they fall to their deaths, and then ghasts occasionally spawn up there. I haven't tested it to see how practical it is but I know it spawns them.

I did not, but I can't imagine they won't. And thanks for giving me a couple more challenge ideas

If I was really intent on getting a few ghasts I'd make a 5x5x5 room for them to spawn in right under the bottom floor you provided. Any pigmen that spawned would fall like they were on any other platform.
that's child's play if your villagers are is a breeding pen surrounded by doors.
on another note, the update is new for me! I sort of stopped at the beginning because I didn't want to wait for the one sapling that I had to grow. :/ (I was using the one with one tree and not much to do.)
one more thing, could you include the list of challenges in the download? it's a lot easier than opening a web browser just to check challenges.
I have seriously thought about this, and think I'm going to. I'm already including a book with some notes in it, so including the challenges as well shouldn't be that hard.
The problem is if the challenges change, the book will be out of date. But if I'm willing to allow that (and I think I am) then there is no real reason not to.
I was going to "sign" the book but I think that instead, I'll leave it editable so you can delete challenges as you go. Which is a bit difficult seeing as you can't edit except by deleting everything. But hey, that's not my fault

Yeah, the challenges aren't all difficult. That one was more to be fun. When I put it in there, sieges could and would happen at any time. These days, you can keep them from happening pretty easily.
Version 4 of the map has this challenge, but it's in the bonus challenges area so you don't have to if you don't feel like it.
I got to admit the more i had those moments where i hate , the more i love you !
am playing for 2 days and i just got the bottom of ocean.. this is really the best survival map i ever played ,,

Thank you! Good news: When you finish this you've got 4.0 to look forward to. And I'm starting to give serious consideration to doing a version 5.0 too!

are you going soft?
Good looking island, and fewer starting blocks.
good job

Zombies.
In version 4.0 (which will hopefully be out tonight!) they may be a bit less rare, but possibly not any easier to get

I'll still post here, but as of this moment OceanBlock 3.1 is redundant and no longer supported.
