Here is some information on my new Complete the Monument style map that is a throwback to the old 404 challenge. It doesn't require you do a big cave without torches like the 404, but I did have the old 404 challenge in mind when I made it.
What is the map?
This map is inspired by a Vechs style map where your task is to complete the 16 wool monument. It was also inspired by the old pre1.8 404 challenge which I personally spent a lot of time working through. This map is intended to start off very easy and progress to be a bit harder. It isn't exactly "ROMhack" hard but medium/hard beyond the first 4 wool.
Rules:
1) Find and complete the Victory Monument.
2) Find wool in chests scattered around the map, do NOT use dyes, placed wool, or spider string for wools!
3) Use at least Easy difficulty, and never Peaceful.
4) Do not leave the boundaries of the map and go into normally generated Minecraft terrain.
5) Survive in any way you can think of. (Yes, you can mine, craft, and place blocks.)
6) You may use spider string wool and sheep wool to craft beds and other items, but not for the Victory Monument.
7) Leave the surface before the first night and never return, even by death (IE set your spawn in the cave before you die the first time, yes, you are going to die)
Versions: Version 1.2 10/24/2011
- Updated the pond on the surface after a lot of requests.
- Changed the surface blocks to half slabs to prevent surface spawning.
- Added 1 little creeper trap early on, nothing special.
Version 1.1 10/23/2011
- Updated a few balancing things.
- Removed the early wheat farm.
- Added 1 piece of dirt a little earlier for tree growth.
- Added more hidden lava :-)
Version 1.0
- First Release.
If you like the map or have suggestions etc, please feel free to post.
I just started the map and found 3 problems:
1: the melons only gave me one slice. I was on prerelease 4
2: monsters still spawned on the non half steps
3: it's raining. might be intentional. probably is

as i was digging around the Light blue wool to destroy the spawners i stumbled on some wool which i burned to revealed a big hallway with a reaper pixelart and a tunnel into its mouth. then i died. :tongue.gif:

So I was watching episode two of BdoubleO when you guys were talking about traps and I thought of one. so the melons you put in walls could drop onto a wooden pressure plate and ignite TNT. also, you shouldn't put a melon in front of the pressure plate or else the person could see it. it would be evil. you could also just put the pressure plate there without being hooked up to anything just so people will freak out.
I also sent you a message on youtube :smile.gif:
anyway, KEEP IT UP
You have to be careful with those. Don't want those baby slimes. :biggrin.gif:

Number 1 is fixed with 1.9_pre5, that was a bug.
Number 3...
I checked the level.dat with NBTEdit. Looks intentional...
That seems like an odd thing to have intentional on this map. I mean, you are supposed to go down the hole before night, but the rain makes it hard to tell when that happens. Sure, there is a watch in the chest, but it would just be a lot more obvious if it wasn't raining.
On a side note, the last section of the map exemplifies why I think void fog is a nonsensical addition to minecraft.
*can't see more than 3 blocks away*
*tard pillars*
*can see for miles*
Makes no sense.
It's also stupid how right after they removed an annoying environmental effect that could show up in buildings at certain heights (moved clouds) they added an annoying environmental effect that can show up in buildings at certain heights (void fog).
I don't know if this is intentional or not, but when i was getting the light blue wool, I poked a hole in the wall (to get to the last zombie spawner) and I found this giant wool building in a square room, I looked inside the building and I saw the giant skull entrance/exit whatever it is. Is this supposed to happen? Or was I just lucky?
i dislike your map but good job on the map its funny i didn't die to mobs but to lava lucky i made a bed so i had a re spawn but then i tryed to get past that part where the lava is and a freak of a creeper killed me GUDDE I LOVE THE MAP BUT GEEZ
this one was real fun, but it should be saved in daylight with no rain/thunder because you really cant tell what time of day it is, and I know you provided a watch, but who uses them? Well, I didn't think to, so pooh.
I think it'll be one of my new let's plays unless it starts to get boring
usr1k and I will be recording more episodes tomorrow!
