Ok everyone this is my first attempt at making a survival/adventure map. I used mcedit to help make it but most of it was built by me. The thing that i did build are kind of shabby, but the gameplay should nevertheless be fun. So heres the story.
2025: After years of depleting earth's resources and non-renewable materials, earth has grown desperate. You and your team(if more than one player), have been sent to Mars, to begin terraforming it into a habitable new planet for mankind. You land safely in your part of the ship, however, moments after landing you here a loud crash.... must have been your equipment cockpit. Your job is to begin the terraforming process.
Requirments:
Successfully grow grass on the surface of mars.
Begin growing trees to increase the oxygen content in the atmosphere.
Bring water to the surface and have a 10x10 lake.
Build a 15x15 wooden cabin.
Build a indoor garden.
Find the secret alien room.
Survive.
Rules:
Don't tear apart the space ship, you can however, remove the contents.
Don't leave the outerwall.
No mods, flying, xray, etc.
Have fun.
Post screenshots, and let me know if you decide to do lets plays of it. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/27180380/Terraf ... 20Mars.zip
sweet idea, but unless you hack grass into a hidden dungeon or something, tis impossible to create grass in a grassless environment, maybe the so ca;;ed "alien room" could have grass in a chest for you to plant?
So my question is, the rules say not to take apart the space craft, but they say nothing of the equipment pod.
Since the grass block is inside the equipment pod, it would seem that it is excluded from the rules, as breaking the grass block to carry it topside won't work?

Awesome. The idea of this map has me very excited. Absolutely love the new 'theme' of survival map.
First hour...
Ouch: Spawned with head underground, suffocating. Jumped out, but 3 hearts gone :sad.gif:
Holding dirt, in bottom of big hole... ok...
Feedback: Dirt? Suggest using netherrack instead or possibly creating this IN the nether?
Feedback: Could use a little more 'thematic' wording of signs - Make them narrative, or possibly look like a readout on the ship's computer screen?
Grass block - already mentioned
Single glass block in water compartment? Is that supposed to be the water tank that busted open?
Finally climbed up to surface after digging out the capsule and making a small shelter...
Glad to see bedrock wall w small enclosed space. Gave me a sense of end-goal (vs. keep building forever)
Feedback: Too much gear in the ship (for survival). Let the player scavenge the capsule and make their own armor. Way too many picks!! Would rather see uncrafted sticks and let me decide what to make. (After playing for over an hour, I wish I had more SHOVELS!)
Feedback: instead of torches, use glowstone in the ship.
Digging...
digging...
digging...
No water under the river? (dug the whole thing down to bedrock. Found some stone. No underground caves where the water used to be? No ice or lava at bottom?)
No real purpose for the furnace yet...
Is the smallness of the map limiting monster spawns? Switched from Easy to Normal... have only seen 1 zombie.
Dug down thru center of every crater and dune down to bedrock... connected tunnels... nothing!?
Hidden stuff must be under the flat part of the land... oh joy... more digging :sad.gif:
(will report more findings later... but still like this map idea a lot)
Water is almost DIRECTLY beneath the first sign telling about water. It's a SMALL cave only about 8 or 10 blocks long and only 2 or 3 wide. About halfway to 3/4 of the way to bedrock
I played this for about an hour last night before it got a little old. Here are my assessments:
I understand the bland landscape. it is suppose to be mars after all.
However, the goals are pretty easy. Within an hour I found water and created my lake. I found the Alien pod, got my diamond space suit. Also broke some of it down since once again the rules only stated not to take your ship apart. Planted 5 trees. Got 3 or 4 mobs spawned including 2 skeles who dropped bones, so I was able to grow the trees fast, harvest and replant.
Here are my suggestions:
There needs to be a better story line imho. Since you included an alien ship, perhaps incorporate that into the story. This also opens the door for redstone and such to be in the map somewhere. Alien technology and all. Perhaps set a goal to make something out of redstone. A beacon perhaps.
Maybe gather 10 Gun Powder for fuel to return home. A grass patch a specific size.
It's a good start. Use the feedback from people here to improve your map. I'll look forward to a second version.
*insert new trees here after i resurface for shovels*
So... yeah. Boring so far, I found out how to make iron, and now I'm digging like mad, looking for aliens and water. A hint, perhaps? I'm craving a wheat farm. D:
EDIT: Got the water, I have a personal goal to re-fill the river
playing the map right now. havent found the water yet, but i now have more tree's then i could ever want or need. wish i had more coal to make more torches so i can light the entire area so i dont have to fight off an army every night if i dont get to the ship in time. im loving it though. i enjoy how i have a set area that gives me more of a goal than a "build whatever you want, whenever you want and as far as you want" theme. that gets a little daunting for me sometimes. love the map idea and layout.

Although you should have put a grass block in a chest, because i had to hack in a single one.
I had hoped to post pics, but im still a noob and don't know how to upload them.
you are correct good sir.

Very good idea, but, it needs a lot more work.
The grass block in the equipment pod kept dissapearing.... due to no light... added some torches to fix the problem.
thanks man

Also thought of some new achievements:
Rebuild your rocket's engine (below the rocket) out of obsidian
Erect a flagpole with flag on top
There's an alien bunker hidden on the map, but no ship.
Spawn.
*checks forums* Ohhh. Grass! Growing grass.... Growing grass...
DIGDIGDIG. Digging in progress.
Lookie! Stone!
No aliens. No mobs.
Dig dig dig... Bedrock.
