...and award for biggest killjoy of the year goes to!..
Had to happen eventually I guess, one way or another. Sectional Moderators don't write the rules, but they have to enforce them. All we can do is complain to the higher ups, which won't do anything. We're best off making a totally badass CTM website, because nulling off topic in this thread is like telling sharks to go vegetarian. It just won't work.
Stay on Topic - Don't derail threads with your own conversation.
Am I right in saying the topic is set by the thread owner? I am not speaking for Vechs, and don't expect him to post on this matter, however he has explicitly said that posts pertaining to his maps, WIP CTM maps of readers of this thread, etc are fine by him.
Vechs created the CTM genre, and over the past year this thread (have you noticed its reached 27k posts? ) has become not only a place to discuss Vechs' wonderful maps, but also the genre as a whole, including...
- Snapshot updates that could be used in a Vechs or CTM map (e.g. tripwires)
- Discussion and feedback of other CTM maps that are inspired by Vechs
- Fan art regarding Vechs or his maps
- etc, etc
These all, by your logic and the logic of certain people are irelevant to the thread that is to discuss these maps and the maps only, but this thread has been going strong for over 1350 pages and if it was not for one silly argument that happened yesterday then everyone would still be happy.
I, myself have been making posts about a CTM map I am working on, and have received some great feedback, however that is to stop now, apparently.
Go ahead and remove my post, warn me, whatever. This thread has become a place to discuss more than the topic that was originally set over a year ago. I'm not saying that blatantly off topic things should be allowed, but the veg/vegan thing was actually relevant to a possible subset of CTM/Super Hostile rules.
Thanks.

This is, largely, how the majority of us feel. There's only so many times a person can say Nightmare Realm is a horrible, terrifying place full of fire and dying, or how Kaizo Caverns is an awesome map, or that Legendary is brutally long. When we talk about things that may seem off-topic, they have a purpose for being there, and in my experience we've never let any one thing become all-encompassing to the point where the topic becomes bogged down in irrelevant information.
This is more than just a topic for the Super Hostile maps, it's for the CTM genere as well, being its birthplace. People come here with Let's Plays, new maps, new ideas, a way to see things in a way that wasn't seen before, and we talk about that. If the only thing we're allowed to talk about is Super Hostile maps, we won't have much to say, because we've said it before.
So essentially, we can't advertise other CTM maps here, Rosie can't post her comics, Vechs can't post about other games, we can't discuss mapping tools and techniques... only posts directly relating to the maps. that'sallfolks.jpg
Comics about vech's maps are fine. Discussion on tools for making vechs maps are fine. That falls under 'content about these maps.' Discussion on someone else's maps, however, belongs in that person's thread, not this one. Additionally, if you wish to have long, in-depth conversations about the CTM genre, create a webpage or IRC channel for it.

Still rather impeding. Rosie has only done one or two SH related comics. Mapmaking tools is okay I guess. But this is like the core place to advertise other CTM maps too, something Vechs not only allows but encourages. It's how CTM maps gets around, this thread has an entire community around it due to it being a new genre... it's up there with Parkour, Adventure, Survival and the like. Treating it like another thread just sort of tosses that community to the wind. What would you suggest us to do, if you were in our shoes?

Steelfeathers, have you read the main post? What your saying goes agest what Vechs allows us to do.

What he's saying is he has to enforce the rules set down by the people that run these forums. In reality, he has as much power as the rest of us do when it comes to this. He's a mod, he has to enforce rules. If not him, then some other mod would. Sadly, Vechs can say he wants on this thread... but what's allowed comes down to the people that run these forums. It's a privilege to be here, not an entitlement, and as such, we abide by their rules in order to use their forums.

I have to treat it like any other thread, no matter how popular or ground-breaking. No one is above the law, so to speak (as you noted). Again, if you guys really feel like there's important conversation that needs to happen about the CTM genre in general, create a thread for it in maps discussion or make your own forum.

Well your more understanding than that other moderator, he deleted anything doing with his existence being here.
I wonder if it's possible to volunteer as a mod for a single thread. That way I could moderate my own thread and the Sectional mods wouldn't have to deal with it.
Anyway, my thread is about more than just the maps that I've made. It's also about the CTM genre as a whole, and map making in general, and obviously Minecraft itself. So I think there are a lot of appropriate topics that are welcome here. I would much rather read a well-written, slightly off-topic post than dreck that is on-topic.

You are fully welcome to start a topic in either the maps discussion section or Minecraft General to talk about map-making/minecraft in general. This is your thread, and I greatly enjoy your maps, but unfortunately topic posters cannot determine the rules for their threads-- the rules are universal across the forums.
EDIT: That is not to say that you can't discuss some aspects of map-making within the contents of these maps, such as saying that 'such-and-such can be done to make a great TNT trap, you should totally use that.'

This is the best solution that I can see and would be, in my opinion, ideal.

I understand that you personally have no control over what rules Curse, Inc. has set down, so this is just academic on my part:
*Vechs puts on his business helmet*
That policy seems poorly considered. I know for a fact that my thread generates at least 5,000 page views per day, because that's how many downloads I get on a slow day. That's people just clicking my download links, so the actual page views should be much higher.
Now, look up and down this page. Assuming you aren't using AdBlock software, you'll notice Curse is running advertisements on every forum page. So every time someone views this thread (or any other) Curse is making money off of it. I'm not sure what CPM rate Curse is getting from their banner ads, but even at a very conservative estimate, my thread has generated thousands of dollars in advertising revenue for them. I assume this is why Curse tolerate modders and mappers using Ad.Fly -- without their threads on Curse forums, their own page views suffer. It's a symbiotic relationship. We earn some money, and so does Curse. (But not nearly as much as YouTube partners earn, but that's a whole other topic. >___> )
That's why I think a policy of "go make your own forum" is... umm... I'll use the word "confusing".

This has been suggested before by members of other "communites" that felt that the staff were pushing in where they weren't belonged, and it was stated by the admins that being a moderator is all or nothing. You either moderate the entire section, or you don't.
You are free to, and I would heartily encourage you to, apply to be a moderator if you wish, however you should be prepared to deal with the entire section. Plus, we generally avoid moderating our own threads, as that can cause bias (whether conscious or unconscious).

We aren't hired by Curse, we are volunteers. The rules aren't dictated by Curse, these are the rules that we have decided on our own.
We couldn't care how much money curse makes, we just want to make sure everyone follows the rules so everyone can have a level playing field (for example, bumping this thread for needless conversation might bump off a cool new map that not many people know of).
Further, I think it would be best to take this to PM.
You can send one to me, or Steelfeathers, and include all the people in your communtiy who you think would be appropriate, so we can sort this out without cluttering the thread
Well, now we have two moderators on the thread... I think I'll check out the CTM Central thread... or start a new "CTM Off-Topic" thread...
BTW Vechs, might I suggest adding a link to CTM Central in the OP?
No, I don't mean over-powered... or operator... Man, abbreviations are a pain...
EDIT: Combining posts for the win!
Copy-Post from the CTM Central Thread:
Hi guys!
Just taking a quick look over the original posts, I'm not exactly sure if this would be an appropiate substitute for what was going in in Vechs's thread... This sounds suspicious, doesn't it?
This seems to be focuses more on reviews and stuff... So might I suggest that Vechs starts an off-topic thread on CTM maps? I would make one myself, but I won't feel quite right doing so...
I don't think it's a problem if this has obviously been a pretty popular thread for about forever. ( referring to everything, of course. the thread should stay how it is.) I mean, no one has ever been upset about it before, and no admin has ever barked at vechs. If it's really an issue, (or if admins really cared), it would have been dealt with beforehand. the thread has been about off topic stuff for a VERY long time, and while I may not post often, I'm here much more than I'd care to admit. I've never seen anyone besides that one guy complain, and then whomph. this ordeal comes up. I say have steelfeathers or Theevilpplz or vechs or whoever take it up with an admin and see what they have to say.
funny thing is, i'd guess that they've already resolved the conflict over pm's, or are pretty close.
well, whatever happens, when Inferno mines and the full Waking Up come out we'll certainly have a LOT to talk about.\
What about a pic of you in 3rd person flying over the void on creative mode?
Also, I get what you are saying for map rules, but it might be fun to try the other way too. It would be more difficult to remember what you can and cant do. It might be fun. Just a thought.
That was my old picture :3 I might revert to that when I hit it.
Which IRC, the normal fourm one, or the CTM one if that exists, because i want to have answers.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I beat two super hostile maps, see of flame 2 and spellbound, have to finish more. Plan to do inferno mines for lulz and win when it goes out. Have fun!
