I never understood why Mojang did not do the 3D chunk "grid" earlier on, it seems a logical act. In fact, it seems so logical that I started out trying to do the mod, and had been dabbling with it a few days until I found out about Cubic Chunks, which, of course, is exactly what I want/need/crave! How close is it to 1.2.5 completion? I read about Robinton's college and other weights of the world, but is there some sort of rough expectations? I assume that I might as well drop my own mod, since it's hardly going to take him/her/them/you more than a few weeks from now... or is it?
Sorry if I'm a bit nosy/pushy on the matter. Just got my new computer, should finally be able to do a whammer of a video series, and damn I would love to see CC and PTM be part of that... I WANT MOUNTAINS TO SHAKE MY FIST AT!!!!!!
PS: I teach and coach for exams professionally, if I could lighten Robinton's burdens in that regard and allow focus on the mod(s), let me know
Thanks for the offer!
I've been in private conversations with Robinton about Cubic Chunks but I'll just repost his current public statement on the subject: [ Source ]
BTW, Cubic Chunks update progress is virtually nill (apart from some time getting familiar with the 1.2.5 changes). I'm looking into releasing the source code, perhaps under a license, or perhaps creating a team of modders allowed to update it.

Oh, that is most unfortunate. :C I really hope that the source code becomes available ASAP and that someone motivated and with enough time can start working on it!!! And I hope Robinton continues to make awesome mods!
Maybe he could look into getting the CC source code to Jeb or something like that? If I recall, he was already rather intrigued by the possibilities. I know that would be difficult, probably impossible, to arrange, but one can hope.

Oh no... There are a few, core, heck I'd say primal features that Minecraft needs to grow. 4096ID might come along naturally (I understand it mainly patches incomplete Mojang code), but CC is really the next, true frontier for the game. As others have said, it's the one thing that could change the whole paradigm of Minecraft. I am now a sad zombie
What I was wondering, though, is if Robinton would rather stop all involvement entirely, or would just prefer to guide someone to do the grunt work. As I mentioned, I am actually working on something similar, but I doubt that I in ANY way have the skills to do it, or at least do it as expertly as the CC mod..... but with some rough guidance, I'd be more than willing to do all the dirty work! Heck, I'll chuck it up to a Padawan experience! So if it is a matter of not having the time to do the grunt coding, I would happily submit myself to Robinton's teachings (I watch too much Star Wars....). Working on my own might be less likely a scenario, at least outside my decidedly more clumsy attempt at pulling off a height mod...
Edit: I will be going to northern Greenland in two months, and staying there for at least a year, in a small town that practically isolates me from everything, physically speaking (do have internet). I'll have the time, trust me

I hope some people take the reins and finish developing this much-needed feature... why do I have to be in grad school? I'd totally be able to help were I not... *sigh*
I don't know if this is the right place to post it, but I am making a fair bit of way with my "Ynlimited" mod, which basically allows the whole layered / 3D chunk method. I am currently building stuff in two layers (see details below), setting and breaking blocks and such in both creative and single player.
I was thinking that once I figure out how to make block collision detection work on the second layer, I'd publish the code, since I have no intentions of making a big name of myself as a modder and would honestly rather see if others want to tamper with it in parallel to me. But how do I publish the code without publishing actual Minecraft code at the same time?
Details on current state of the mod: In at least Creative and SSP (maybe SMP, I lack the tools for checking), the player can currently use 2 layers. Each layer is currently 6 blocks high, to make testing easier, but that goes to 256 with a switch of a number, making 2 layers = 512 blocks high, and allowing for an unknown number of layers stacked, for unspecified (large) maximum height. At the moment, I can fly around up and down and break/place blocks on the layers, which should mean it already allows breaking/placing blocks in 512 block height, with unknown upper limit potential. As stated, I haven't yet figured out how to make collicion detection work on the extra layer(s), but I am working on that. Also, many things (water, fire, some mob activity, etc.) will still only work on the "base" layer, but it should be more a matter of grunt code work (inserting a single variable over and over again across the entire code) to make that work.
Note that I am only moving on with this mod in case the Cubic mod update falls apart. I doubt it can match up to Robinton's work, but if that work is lost, well, now there is another Skywalker. Sorry, another mod! I meant mod, definitely mod!
Nice! And yes, this is exactly the place to talk about such Height Mod related things.
I have to say though, it's sounds like what you are coding is a derivative of Jebs Quasi-Cubic Chunks and not the real Cubic Chunks (3D Chunks) method that Robinton is using.
There are no layers involved with the true 3D Chunks method. The y-space just goes out as far as the variable size allows. What jeb has done is a sort of compromise between the true Cubic Chunks and the old Linear chunks methods. If he had been willing to work something out with Robinton he could have had true Cubic Chunks.
The Quasi-Cubic chunks still do work better than linear chunks, but don't be fooled. Robinton and Nocte have discerned that these Quasi-Cubic-Chunks could perhaps be pushed as far as 4096 blocks without changing much base code but the performance at that scale would never be as good as true Cubic Chunks performance.
And jebs Quasi method is not really compatible with Cubic Chunks. Most all of the minecraft base code that Robinton had to change before would still need to be completely changed in order for true Cubic Chunks to work. And that's a looot of work to do.
As much as I Love the clever name you've come up with "Ynlimited", a derivative of jebs Quasi-Cubic Chunks is actually much more limited than the true Cubic Chunks method. However! It would still be a VERY Useful addition to the Height-Mod community. Especially if it didn't need to change as much of the base-code to work. It could be more compatible. The fact that you have SMP working already shows that.
I would love to see you complete your mod, there is definitely room and use for it. In fact I predicted to Robinton when Anvil came out that there would be a Height Mod derivative (extension) of Jebs Quasi-Cubic Chunks at some point.
* It really is the natural way to go now that completely Linear Chunks Height Mods are a thing of the past. An extension of the Quasi-Chunks method could easily give people 512 high or 1024 high worlds that run FAR faster than a similar old Linear Chunks mod could do. In fact, Linear chunks worlds of those heights were completely unplayable, whereas yours would play just fine!
Hehe, I have absolutely no idea if I am doing a true 3D chunk, a quasi-3D, or something completely different. When the player (or, hopefully, other beings/mobs) move higher than the 256 ceiling, they enter a completely new chunk. Right now, the chunk is a copy of lower chunks, but it should be made empty soon and eventually be accessible to world generations (to generate 256+ high mountains and such). I got one part of the collision stuff working, but not the full thing; things still collide as if they are elsewhere (don't ask... *sigh*). Plus, tons of other "interesting" bugs/problems...
But the main question still stands: Is there an accepted/acceptable procedure for sharing larger code without tresspassing on Mojang property? I may postpone public sharing a little, because I may have found a far more streamlined structure that I will test once the collision stuff works. But after that, I'd like to make the code public, in a proper manner. But how?
Nice! I'm glad to see you are making progress on it.
I'll put you in contact with ScottKillen regarding the source code issue, He may be able to better advise you regarding that.

Nevercool, I am no lawyer. I have tried to find the articles supporting this, but I cannot: I read somewhere that, technically, modders who share their code are operating in a gray area--but Mojang is supportive and very lenient. Certainly it helps that large projects make tremendous efforts towards respecting Mojang and not releasing full sourcecode. MCP contains no sourcecode and Forge distributes diffs that it applies to MCPs deobfuscated code.
I think that the safer ground is to distribute only diffs...which means that I need to revisit so code I am hosting on github (Robinton's 4096IDs) I believe that Mojang would be within its legal right to take civil action against modders, but in general they understand the positive impact of modding and know that they have not been damaged even by the most blatant distribution of their code. They also want to maintain their position in the community, so they do not pursue their rights to the fullest extent allowed.
I hope this allays your concerns a bit...I liken it to my next door neighbor who lets my kids play in their yard...technically they could enforce trespassing laws...but they know that there would be no positive results from that...and they are nice...so they don't.
That all seems like the right thing, yes. I think I will not release code, but rather a quick guide to insert some released (made by me) code snips into an unmodified Minecraft 1.2.5 codebase via MCP. That will be even more plausible once I do the streamlining I plan, hopefully allowing me to publish something next week.
Thanks for the input! And thanks for getting Scott in on it, MineCrak :-)
Nevercool, I hope you will consider me a friend and cll on me anytime.
I was going to wait until it's full release, and actually will wait a bit before saying everything that needs saying, but I just want to make everyone aware of this new 1.2.5 Height-Mod option that is currently in beta but will soon be available to everyone!
This post rambles for quite a bit but does have a lot of info in it for those interested. So I will preface it with a copy of the OP annoucement Summary first then you can dig into the rest of this post for more info if you wish.
--------------------------------------------------
[2012-7-11] GravityCraft for MC v1.2.5 is currently in closed Beta-Testing but is Soon to be Released!
It combines two different types of Height-Modding as well as Gravity Manipulation and even block reorientation! It is absolutely crazy and it works!!
The new GravityCraft is the culmination of the combined Genius of Ivorius and MineT3485. All of their prior work on the MineUp! and original GravityCraft Demo have been combined, updated and improved in every way imaginable to bring us all this Tour-d-force called GravityCraft!
--------------------------------------------------
The history leading up to this new Monumental Release of GravityCraft for 1.2.5:
A number of people here may recall MineT3485's incredible and completely uniqueMineUp! Mod for b1.8.1. It gave you more height, and depth, in minecraft in a way completely different to every other Height Mod. It stacked separate Dimensions directly on top of each other and made the connection seamless!! You could dig, fly or build directly into the other dimension layers including a configurable Nether layer and skyrealms layer!
In addition to all that some incredible Minecraft Gravity manipulation was included in that mod. One optional aspect of MineUp! in it's last version was the ability to have upside-down dimension layers! You could dig down to where there would normally be Bedrock but not find any, instead after you go below y=0 you would flip over and down would now be up. You would keep digging "Up" until you break through to the surface of a normal looking world dimension that just happens to be on the opposite side of the world than the one you started on! You could even blow a hole through the ground from one side all the way to the other and see through it! And here's the kicker, When it's day on one side, it's night on the other etc. So you truly have a two-sided flat world.
It also included a fun bit of Gravity manipulation where-in you could reverse a mobs, or players, Gravity anywhere by hitting it with a snowball.
Well; Ivorius, maker of the GravityCraft demo for b1.8.1 (Which allowed controllable Gravity Shifting of the player in all directions), was brought together with MineT3485 by me back in those days to see what these two Minecraft Gravity Manipulation Geniuses could accomplish together. They started working together on a unified Minecraft Engine that combines both of their methods and abilities in regards to Gravity manipulation, Dimension stacking, Block rotation etc.
MineT3485 unfortunately ended up having to leave in order to pursue a fantastic job opportunity, but he left Ivorius with all of his MineUp! Source Code and his blessing to keep working on this dream of a unified engine that would be the Core of the Next Generation of both MineUp! and GravityCraft. (Thank You MineT!! )
* Well... The new GravityCraft for Minecraft v1.2.5 is almost here!!!
Ivorius has been working his butt off on this project, the reworking of MineUp! and GravityCraft into one engine and making it Anvil compatible was not in any way trivial. There are so many things in minecraft affected by all that this engine allows that it takes a crazy amount of attention to detail, creative coding and sheer willpower to bring it all together and make it work. Well, Ivorius has all of that.
The Unified Engine is now called GravityCraft and provides amped up versions of all the options available in both prior projects and even more! You can stack as many dimension layers on top of each other as you desire now, during world creation, with a friendly and convenient Menu system. You can stack different kinds of dimensions in whatever order you want and even determine the Gravity and block direction of each layer. In addition to this you now have a nicely polished system for user controlled Gravity manipulation within your worlds via discrete objects that you can set up however you like.
** The adventures that can be had with GravityCraft will be the stuff of YouTube Legend very soon! And what the heck, I'll let this secret out now... Ivorius has fully cracked Anvil Height Modding and included it in GravityCraft too!!
Not only can you stack as many layers (dimensions) as you wish into a single seamless world, but you can control how tall each layer is! You can even make the layers 128 high each like before Anvil, but it will actually still be Anvil and your FPS will go up! Or you can make each layer 512 or higher each. So technically you could make a world with only one layer but make it 512 blocks high or more, or make it only 128 high.
You might be tempted to think that all of this wild stuff that GravityCraft does to Minecraft might make the game too slow to play.. But I'm here to tell you that isn't true!
The new GravityCraft is currently in closed Beta-Testing and I have a Golden-Ticket allowing me to test it. I have tested GravityCraft on a truly ancient and slow system; it plays smoothly! It is completely playable even on slow laptops etc.
** One important thing I need to mention though. Currently you really need to create a new world with GravityCraft in order to use it. I was able to get into an old world with it but for some reason it barely functioned. I'm sure Ivorius will look into this over time, but for now just expect to start a new world with it. Besides, you need to start a new world in order to use the WorldGen options for setting up the dimensions, gravity orientation etc.
This is something to keep your eyes on folks! I will let you know when it has been fully released.
*** In the meantime; keep a clean copy of your Minecraft v1.2.5 folder (yes the entire .minecraft folder not just the .jar) backed up and zipped up in as many locations as you can. You'll be wanting sure access to GravityCraft for a long time.
Im trying to make my mod to include world generation code that would raise the base terrain height up further. It seems silly that now that we have such a large high we can build at that most of it is just empty space in the the air. This is minecraft so some of that should be put to mining. So basically I just want to raise the sea level and the rest of the generation up 32 to 64 blocks, so we would have much more underground layers. But Ive run into a problem and I cant seem to figure out how to do it. I understand that it is probably in chunkproviderGenerate and in the generate terrain function, but Ive messed with the variables and only have gotten really wacky results and nothing like I wanted to.
This topic seems like it would have quite a few people that might know how to do this and I really would appreciate the help.
The base terrain level is partially defined in WorldType and partially hardcoded in various places. I'm working on a similar mod, but have not traced it all yet. But, it will require you to begin in WorldType and trace how terrain is generated.
Could you please inform me if there is any way at all to install Cubic Chunks on the current official release of minecraft (1.2.5)?? If not, are there any official download links for older versions of minecraft, specifically 1.7.3 or 1.8.1? All I can find when I search for them is torrents..

I hope this helps.

Interesting, luckily Im making a new world type and generation so changing them wont be a problem but tracking them down I guess will be the hard part. Let me know if you figure it out. Ill do the same if I do.
Edit:
hrmm only thing I found in world type that pertains to this is getChunkGenerator but I kinda already knew that hrmm oh well Guess Ill keep searching

There is no official way to get earlier versions of Minecraft from Mojang. And no unfortunately there isn't currently a version of Cubic Chunks for v1.2.5. Maybe later, or for 1.3.
However; you can use MCNostalgia, which is linked at the top of my OP in this thread , to convert your clean copy of Minecraft (any full released version not the snapshots) into most any previous version with a diff file. This has been allowed on this forum for well over a year now so download it now just in case!
I would personally use one of the two methods listed at the top of my OP here to create more than one install of minecraft on your computer. That way you can still play the newest version while also playing an older CC version whenever you want easily. If you are using Windows then I would recommend the first option that I list.
Good luck!
btw: Great topic for your first post in this forum!

The MineUp Height Mod, combined with GravityCraft, has now been Released for Minecraft 1.2.5! The features and capabilities of this mod are unbelievable!
Please read the New MineUp Intro/Summary in this threads OP Post which includes links to the Mod and it's Videos etc. MineUp is now listed in this OP along with all of the other Height Mods Minecraft has had and still has.
* Do yourself a favor and use one the methods listed at the top of this OP post to set up a separate MC 1.2.5 folder that you can install MineUp into now. You'll be glad you didn't wait.
Thanks for the offer!

Curse PremiumThe base terrain level is partially defined in WorldType and partially hardcoded in various places. I'm working on a similar mod, but have not traced it all yet. But, it will require you to begin in WorldType and trace how terrain is generated.
I hope this helps.
Scott
Thanks

Curse PremiumInteresting, luckily Im making a new world type and generation so changing them wont be a problem but tracking them down I guess will be the hard part.
However; you can use MCNostalgia, which is linked at the top of my OP in this thread

Jeb just tweeted that 1.3.2 will likely come out to address the Nether Portal bug that is killing people.
* So expect more of a delay when it comes to Height Mods, and all other mods, being updated for MC 1.3.x.
