I definitely plan to. I'd have built some epic cities already, if not for the fact I can't find a suitable world. I've been trying to find a seed that gives me like, a continent (large island, multiple biomes of each type), but every time one seems to be panning out (by following the shore in a boat), it keeps generating bigger and bigger, until the area I've spent exploring turns out to be like, 5% of the size of what the continent is likely to be.
Its annoying. Though, if I got a world where mountains and cliffs and such generated thousands of blocks high, I'd be perfectly happy building there, and exploring as I go, rather than exploring first, then building. Reason being - with default terrain generation, as I see it, its the build that makes an area epic, so long as you find a suitable area to build in. But, with a cliff like that? Both play an equal part. So, I won't need to build a series of unique cities in order to be satisfied!
I hate hearing about you having to go through all that. Perhaps the following tool will help you somewhat when searching for the right Vanilla world.
It doesn't need you to even supply or generate a world, just give it a seed. Once you find a world that looks investigation-worthy you can go ahead and actually make that seed. Then using the tool you can change your location in game so you can check it out in greater detail.
On that note, perhaps that could be an interesting world type, in addition to your super mountains generation? Continents world type? Course, they would have to be suitably huge, but if there's a way to generate a world that forms continents separated by oceans, instead of the usual flat world with oceans here or there (as is the usual case with me), that'd be cool. Make it seem more like a world. For reference, check out the Civilization series' world variations. You could get land with lakes, or continents, and so on.
Just an idea. I have no idea how possible it would be.
Also, totally just realized the forum saves posts in progress. Wow... go Minecraft Forums!
Actually, Continents as Meta-Biomes with variable size and graduated height characteristics and other biomes on top of them has already been discussed in the Cubic Chunks thread a long time ago, as well as deep ocean trenches and much more. Great minds think alike!
There is so much that can and should be done to get us the kind of truly awesome worlds that we'd be happy with keeping.

I love you, MineCrak. Within minutes with that program, I found me what seems to be a suitable world. Seed is 'continentsplease', amusingly enough. The main concentration (its kinda two together) is about 15k by 15k blocks from northeast to southwest, but there's a nice sized island of a few biomes to the north of the rough spawn area. I can start something there, then when I'm geared up, I can explore the island.
This is a good plan.
Well now... I guess I should have paid more attention to the thread back then! Ah well. Anyway, thanks again... I'll go start on that world now, and see where I get!

All right! Man, that tool you gave me... it really got me motivated! Having found a suitable seed, one with a pair of connected continents that, while huge, are not stupid huge, as well as a small starting island to use... I've started!
Nothing huge so far, but I have my first temple! Its only a small one, as it should be considering this island is a sort of 'colony', or will be when I get more done. With regards to the 'artifact' or 'statue', its a small version of the bigger ones that will be featured in bigger temples, when I get more Lapis and Gold. And red wool too. As for what those bigger statues will be of (since the small one isn't big enough for any sort of detail; I just went with a neat looking one with the right color scheme)? A blue falcon. You see, my character skin has always been Captain Falcon, so my world's 'God' figure is, of course, Captain Falcon, or in his place, the Blue Falcon.
...anyway. Small build though it is, it kind of gives an example to the type of builds I prefer - simple builds that use and, hopefully, enhance the landscape. Here's a pic from a small island just off the coast. I have more, but I figure I shouldn't clutter up your thread. I have too much already I fear, but since you gave me the inspiration to finally start my build...:

That is the PERFECT place for a Temple!! And an great looking one it is. I'm so glad you've found a world with potential that works for you. That's the big part of the battle right there. I've been on plenty of worlds that just did not inspire me, but those that do are priceless.

Just wait until the accompanying village is finished (or further progressed). Its... its something. Lots of tiered height changes, since its build in a sort of hilly area (the hill leading tot he temple butts up against two others). Lots of terraforming work. Worth it though.

zarrab, the author of the 'MapHeight 256' Mod for mc 1.1, has today confirmed that Robinton's SaveConverter 2.0.1 is able to successfully convert people's 'MapHeight 256' worlds over to Anvil! Rescuing them from oblivion.
zarrab is officially including SaveConverter's use as the first step in how to move his mod's saves over to Anvil versions of Minecraft.
His current project is a Terrain Mod version of his original Height Mod, since Anvil already has 256 height. His mod starts terrain at a different height than Anvil does so his new project, when combined with the use of SaveConverter, will allow people with those worlds to continue using them as if nothing has changed.

* The following Mod is a great Support Mod for Higher Worlds and Height Mods as it can make keeping track of your Elevation and showing it in Screen shots much easier.
Introduction to Robinton's:
Coordinates Info Mod (CIM) [F4] v2.2 [ Download Here ]
This is one of my all-time favorite mods, one I'd even use on a "Vanilla-only" world. And now with version 2.2, for mc v1.2.5, it's pretty much a completely customizable replacement for Minecraft's [F3] Debugging screen (Without those graphs and pie-charts). I believe it requires ModLoader but I might be wrong, I always have ML installed.
CIM is Toggled On and Off with the [F4] key. It can display most all of the useful info available on the [F3] screen except for the graphs (this is a feature). Aside from not cluttering the screen with the graphs, which [Shift][F3] also does now; The Info displayed by CIM [F4] is completely customizable!
CIM creates a Config file in the .minecraft/config folder named "CoordsInfoProperties.txt" after your modded Minecraft is run and used for the first time. It is conveniently a .txt file so you can just double-click on it to open and edit it. The contents of this file will determine what Text and Info will be displayed on your screen and where it will be displayed when you toggle [F4] On.
The Default contents on the config file will currently look like the following:
Which will produce the following Info Display In-Game:
For the rest of this I will omit the contents of the top of the config file and only list the lower configuarable portion.
You can type any text you want into this config file and it will appear on the screen. Combine that with the Special {Strings} that Robinton has provided and you will be able to piece together just about any combination of the available info that you want in almost any way that you want! Much better than [F3].
Below is an In-Game Display of [F4] with All of the available Info strings activated:
Below are a few examples of very basic Info Displays with just some of the available info displayed. I'm still experimenting myself to find my favorite one:
You can see the possibilities. I also want to mention that Robinton has added something else to CIM that I find makes it much nicer to use than [F3]:
Instead of just a Direction number [0-3], though you can have that too, CIM can display the Direction names, and 8 of them not just 4! The following pic shows what I'm talking about:
btw: The seed used in the above CIM Intro is "CIM" (no quotes and all capital letters). It translates into "66727".
It has turned out to be a fascinating seed! You can't really tell from the pics above because I just used one scene with a dark backdrop for the display.
If you keep going exactly straight S.W. from spawn you will eventually find a very large lake with a Mysterious Jungle Island right in the middle. Island is at -1024, +1024
When I first played Minecraft, one of the first things that I had to know was simply this: how high could I build? Of course we all know how that works now, but the question was very important then because it would determine the extent to which I could build huge and strange things. So I built my little idiot tower and, disgusted, hit the height limit. I promptly jumped to my doom in a fit of nerd rage.
This experience did not stop me from playing Minecraft, but it was a sore disappointment. When I heard about the doubling of the build height I was overjoyed and soon began a large project, converting a single player survival map into my own twisted fairy tale of a world using imagination and a few mods.
The scale you can build on now (in a normal map at sea level) is much better, as a structure at sea level can be three times as high as it could previously be. This is awesome, and (for me at least) fundamentally changes the nature of play. Towers can truly be towers. We can do things that are staggeringly large compared to what we did yesteryear.
And yet there are still limits imposed. I don't object to this in the slightest; I'm enough of a realist to accept limits as necessary, and a bit of a programmer myself, so I can begin to imagine some of the reasons for their existence in this case.
But I have to ask (as I can't seem to find other references to this particular question) if we'll ever see a further extension of Minecraft's vertical scale. For even my insanely massive mountains are really small hills, at 630 odd feed above sea level. Even if I were to build on the lowest level that would still be 840 feet - scarcely worth a bother to any real world mountaineer worth his pitons.
Understand that I am not complaining. I've been playing for a very long time, and I imagine I'll be playing for at least that long yet. Minecraft is without a doubt the best value in gaming as far as I'm concerned. But there are still things I'll never be able to do at the current limit. I'm curious if we'll ever see these limits changed, or if there are mods for this sort of thing.
Funny you should ask.
You can visit my Higher Worlds thread for some of those answers and a bunch of Links, but I haven't updated it recently so I'll answer some for you here and now.
Jeb's conversion of Minecraft from 128 tall to 256 tall was inspired by Robinton's Cubic Chunks height Mod, which increases vertical space to 64k blocks. There is a huge difference between 64k and 256, but jeb chose to use a "Quasi-Cubic" method instead of a fully Cubic Chunks or "3D Chunks" method in order to play it safe for now and to get it working faster. -- Even so, Robinton believes it may be possible to extend Jeb's Quasi-Cubic method as far as 4096 blocks instead of 256.
Robinton hasn't updated Cubic Chunks for mc v1.2.5 yet due to being incredibly busy in college atm, but if it doesn't get updated for 1.2.5 then it likely will for 1.3.
In the mean-time, if you really need more height badly you could use the Spoutcraft client to extend the height via the old method of Linear Chunks. You'd better have a really fast computer though because going beyond 256 with linear chunks slows your computer down horribly, whereas Cubic Chunks wont. The link for Spoutcraft and everything else is in my thread linked above.
* Or better yet: There are also links to instructions for setting up more versions of Minecraft on a windows PC at the same time, and reverting some of those installs to prior versions of Minecraft. You could then Download and use an older version of Cubic Chunks to start building in and then convert that map/world to a newer version later using Robinton's World Save Converter. There are several Large-Scale builders doing exactly that right now.
[EDIT] Also! Ivorius is in the process of updating MineT3485's incredible and unique MineUp! Mod for mc v1.2.5 (Perhaps will end up for 1.3?) MineUp! uses a completely different method of achieving greater Vertical space than any other Height mod ever has; it Stacks Dimension folders! And it works surprisingly well. It even throws in special features like the option for an upside down version of the normal world beneath the normal one where gravity is reversed. You can tunnel down to the other side of the world!
The last version of MineUp was for mc v1.8.1. MineT3485 recently handed the reigns over to another Gravity Modder, Ivorius, to carry on the torch. He has a very big job ahead of him since he must convert to Anvil etc. Let's give him our support and appreciation! The link to Ivorius's thread is his name just after the edit mark.
Its annoying. Though, if I got a world where mountains and cliffs and such generated thousands of blocks high, I'd be perfectly happy building there, and exploring as I go, rather than exploring first, then building. It doesn't need you to even supply or generate a world, just give it a seed. Once you find a world that looks investigation-worthy you can go ahead and actually make that seed. Then using the tool you can change your location in game so you can check it out in greater detail.

Minecraft {MCVersion} - Seed: {Seed} - ({MCDebug}) Elevation: {PlayerY} x: {PlayerX} z: {PlayerZ} . [{FacingNumber}] {FacingName} {Biome}You can see the possibilities. I also want to mention that Robinton has added something else to CIM that I find makes it much nicer to use than [F3]:
Instead of just a Direction number [0-3], though you can have that too, CIM can display the Direction names, and 8 of them not just 4! The following pic shows what I'm talking about:
8 Direction names:

It has turned out to be a fascinating seed! You can't really tell from the pics above because I just used one scene with a dark backdrop for the display.
If you keep going exactly straight S.W. from spawn you will eventually find a very large lake with a Mysterious Jungle Island right in the middle.
