So obviously you can use player names in commands to select players. But you can also use @p, (Nearest player, which if you type in chat is you) @r, (A random player on the server) @a (This will target everyone.)
So you probably knew about those little @ selectors. But did you know that you can do this after them:
So what do they all mean? Well I'm about to tell you, that isn't even all of them.
So, let's start off with the basics.
x=#,y=#,z=#,r=#
So as you might have guessed, these are co-ordinates. "But what is the r?" Well, this is the radius of the area it checks. Quite simple.

This will let you press a button which will make you go a certain way. Of course, I wouldn't expect people to remember numbers. So just have a sign above/below each button saying where the track leads and then everything will be just dandy.
