For about a month now I've gotten so many errors trying to join my brother on Minecraft Java using LAN, but i get an error, find a solution, and then i get a different error, and it goes on. It seems i can't find a solution to this error. The "Timed Out" error. I've already checked other threads saying i should check my connection or port or whatever, i know its not the problem, because LAN was working fine before i updated my Minecraft from 1.10.2 to 1.12.2. I still couldn't find a simple solution to my problem, and so that's why I'm posting on the forum. Is there any easy solution to the Minecraft "Timed Out" error when I'm trying to join a LAN server?
I've checked my firewall settings, (I allowed access to private and public networks for Java). I've also checked my antivirus settings, (I use AVG), and I'm pretty sure it's not blocking anything because I was still using AVG when LAN was working....
Say something silly, Laugh 'til it hurts, Take a risk, Sing out loud, Rock the boat, Shake things up, Flirt with disaster, Buy something frivolous, Color outside the lines, Cause a scene, Order dessert, Make waves, Get carried away, Have a great day!
I had this problem myself with my new computer. Only it was other computers that were trying to connect to me. It took a couple of days, but I figured it out.
In my internet settings, my computer thought it was connected to a public network. I changed that to public, and it worked perfectly fine after that. So on the computer that you are trying to connect to, make sure that it is set to a "private" network, not public.
I've uninstalled AVG and Installed Avast on both computers, but now I get a new error, the "Took to long to log in" error. I've gotten this error before, and that's what lead to the "Timed Out" Error.

Um.......can you remind me how to change the Java settings so only private networks are turned on? Because I have both private and public turned on and I can't remember how to change it...
EDIT
I've tried googling how to do that, but I couldn't find what I wanted..
If it is Windows 10, click on the WiFi signal icon. Right click the internet connection that you are connected to, and click properties. If it is set to Public, change it to Private
If that wasn't clear enough, hopefully this is
If you are using Windows 8/8.1, I'm pretty sure the process is exactly the same. If you are using Windows 7 or Vista (Who uses Vista anymore?), I hope it is the same, or very similar. Also, make sure you are doing this on the computer that is HOSTING the LAN world, not the one connecting to it (although if it doesn't work, do it on both computers.)
If it is already set to private, I don't know what else to say. It could be your firewall's fault or something.
I turned on private networks only for my computer (windows 10 btw) and I still have the "Took To Long to Log in" error. I'm going to try connecting to the server on an administrator account because when we logged it was under the guest account. I'm going to try again on my brothers' normal account (he uses windows 8) and see if it works, and turn on private networks on again. But I also noticed a slight difference to the menus (this happened when we updated our minecraft)
I don't know why it looks different (maybe because of the windows versions?) but i think is has to do with my problem....
EDIT
My screen and buttons look the same as 1.10.2, (the version i had before) but my brothers' look like it's been updated....

It looks like your brother still has the April Fools textures on his computer, which should have been reverted back on April 2nd. The only reason I can think of that they wouldn't have been is that he isn't connected to the internet.
I did see some cases in which they never reverted back. In which case, try intalling Optifine into your mods folder. But if he is connected to the internet, the textures he has should not affect anything.
So you have tried setting the network to private, and you still can't log in. What I would do is direct connect. For LAN worlds, you need the IP address for whichever computer is hosting the world, and the port number, which appears in chat after you create the LAN world. If you don't know your IP address, watch this (I was too lazy to make my own video, so here's this one):
You just need the IPv4 address, followed by the port number with a colon between them.
So if your IPv4 address is 10.234.5.0
And the port number is 55555
you would type 10.234.5.0:55555
If that doesn't work, I don't know what else to say, other than maybe either your internet or the host computer is just too slow.

Sorry, I'm busy with some things, and I wasn't able to post. I'll let you know when I've tried that out.

Are you still there?
Uninstall AVG Antivirus.
