Up until Minecraft v1.3 I have been able to play with very high fps. Now I won't even play v1.3 and above because of framerates. And no it isn't because my pc sucks. I was even able to host a server and play at the same time.
My specs are:
AMD athlon 2 x4 635
8 gigs of ddr3 ram
Radeon HD 6850 with a gig of video ram
My pc isn't by any means top of the line but my performance for minecraft shouldn't get worse. Them combining server and single player was the worst mistake they could have made.
Use Optifine, allocate more memory, set Java's priority to high, use Game Booster. There are ton of things which can help you improve FPS. Also, you might want to clean your computer up a bit (both physically and software wise) IE cleaning the registry, uninstalling and deleting unnecessary programs, cleaning the inside of your casing from dust etc.
Na you need a new computer that one sucks. Send that one to me and go get a new one
I have a similar, but older, set up, and Optifine doubles my framerate most of the time. Worth the effort to put it on your build of Minecraft. And yes their are some builds that took a significant hit in performance with the new patch. Seems quite random who got hit and who didn't. In my case I'm doing fine, but I did loose a few frames per second. Dinerbrine and the bukkit peoples have addressed this issue and are working on things for the 1.4 patch. He is a good guy so I think good things will be happening.
From what I had read they were talking to the Optifine peoples but could not come up with a plan to make the Optifine tweeks part of the game.

My pc does not suck, Just built it last year. Can play current games at max with smooth framerate. And if my pc sucks so bad why do you want it?
I have a FX-6100 with a Radeon HD 6570, built it this month, I'm getting extremely good performance (averaging 100/200 FPS) compared to my old PC. How bad is the lag you're getting?
Also, full specs are in my sig.
60 and below. And it isn't a constant 60 either. Also, I can imagine you getting good performance with an ssd.
