Hi, I am considering buying this HP laptop with the following specs:
AMD Quad-Core A8-3510MX Accelerated Processor (2.5GHz/1.8GHz, 4MB L2 Cache)
640GB 7200RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
1GB GDDR5 Radeon(TM) HD Dual Graphics [HDMI, VGA]
With this build it is priced at around $750 which is ideally within my budget. My question is... I looked up the graphics card and found out it was dual and that this particular kind has a problem supporting older games or something which is slightly worrying. Can any of you explain any more or know anything about this? Also, will the above specs be alright for playing minecraft fluently on high graphics? If not, are there any other similarly priced laptops (under $1000) that you would recommend that would be better for gaming with? I understand I do not have a lot of money to work with but any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
Unfortunately I would not even know where to begin in terms of building one myself and the HP laptop I mentioned above was customised to the max that they had in terms of proccessor/graphics in my price range. I checked out the link but am a little confused, Is that a laptop that is better in spec than the one I am considering? (Sorry if that is a silly question, I do not know much about computing but am trying my hardest to understand). It seems like the processor is better than the HP but the graphics card might not run other/newer games apart from minecraft? Or is that incorrect, I'm not exactly sure.
It can play minecraft fine, but there are many other options at that price range.
The dual graphics are like crossfire: That cpu has integrated gpu in it and you have dedicated gpu also. They can work together like normal crossfire in desktop computers. The problems with old games probably mean that the old games won't support crossfire, which causes the laptop to use only the dedicated graphics card or the cpu's integrated gpu alone. It might decrease the performance in old games little bit but shouldn't be anything significant.
The main problem of that laptop is poor cpu power. Those laptop APU processors aren't that great.
Is VISION Technology from AMD with AMD Phenom™ II Dual-Core Mobile Processor N640, 2.9GHz, 2MB L2 Cache a better processor than the one I was considering? Thanks for the help, especially with regards to the dual graphics card. Informative. :smile.gif:
The Laptop I linked has a better Processor and a better Graphics Card.
The only thing about the one you showed was that it has the ability to switch a shitty Integrated GPU to save power when you attempt to play games that Java sees as "Not-so Heavy 3D Game"

Thank you for the clarification. Would this type of graphics card be able to run a game like starcraft 2 semi-smoothly on mid graphics or so?
Graphics: nVidia GeForce GT540M (Optimus) with 1GB dedicated memory
Memory: 4GB DDR3 (max 8GB)
Display: 15.6” HD (LED Backlit), 1366 x 768 resolution
Hard Drive: 500GB 5400RPM
Audio: Stereo Speakers 1.5W X 2, SRS Premium Sound
It is marked at a retail price of around $800. To me it all looks pretty decent but with my limited knowledge of the matter I would like maybe a second or third opinion. I've been using a site with graphic card comparisons & from there I have gathered that it is a 'fast middle class' card that 'can play demanding games like sc2 in medium to high settings' which is ideal for me. I would also like for it to be able to fluently run minecraft (preferably on highest setting). Do you think that these overall specs are reasonable for the price? If not, what should I be looking for? Thank you once again to anyone who responds and sheds some light. Apologies for not being more computer savy.

I wouldn't call it the best but I'd say it's well rounded. The processor is indeed a high end model (although there are better), the GPU is mid-range at best, solid amount of memory, and the hard drive is on the slow side. For $800 it's a nice find though
I said for 800$ it's the best he will probably find. You can try to look for better one if you wish :wink.gif:

I am still browsing hours later, I would hate to feel like I missed out on an opportunity for something better even if it just fruitless searching. Seems like HP has some decent builds for around $900 with a:
# 2nd generation Intel(R) Dual Core(TM) i7-2620M (2.7GHz, 4MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.4 GHz
# 1GB GDDR5 Radeon(TM) HD 6770M Graphics [HDMI, VGA]
that seems pretty impressive to me along with well-rounded overall specs (750GB drive/6GB System mem etc).
However I have found under the reviews for that specific graphics card/hp model that it has no Open GL support which I presume would mean things like photoshop and minecraft along with certain other games cannot be played? -.-'' Either way, the nice graphics/processor appealed to me initially however if they cannot meet my minecraft addiction needs, it's out of the question. :tongue.gif: Also, as a sidenote, I have found HP laptops to be less reliable in my experience (customer support isn't very helpful either). I do not know if that is just a personal experience or something that is generally accepted. I'm liking the samsung option a fair bit at this point. Thank you guys for your replies!

Get the Samsung, this one has a dual core i7 whereas the Samsung had a quad core. The GPU is better but you're losing a quad core for a dual core.

You could get better by building yourself one, but here's a laptop for udner $1,000 that'll easily run Minecraft.. Easily.

Alright, thanks. I'll be getting the Samsung ^^
