A new law passed in NY on bullying. Apparently, if you say or do anything, that even remotely resembles bullying, you can get suspended, and the police can be notified. This doesn't go into effect until July, but my dumb school is enforcing it now. The students and teachers both joke and poke fun at this law, but we are always reminded that this is serious. The bad part of it, is that my school is filled with drunks, potheads, rednecks, and mentally challenged students, and are immune to this. All of these people are sophomores, seniors, or sixth graders. They have no respect for anyone and they are above rules and regulations. Most of the bullying in the school happens in those grades, and because of it, we have to suffer. Has anyone else heard of this "law?"
It varies here depending on location, but there are elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. Here, elementary is K-5th grade, middle is 6th to 8th, and high school is 9th to 12th. Although in some areas, middle and high or middle and elementary school are combined.
wait, mabye i didn't read right.
you're complaining that people can get suspended for bullying?
or ar you complaining that there was a loophole?
or are you complaining that i can speed-read?
i cant stand bullying, but i am complaining because if anything resembles bullying is punishable. We were told we are not allowed to joke about anything. I would love if a law was passed targeting bullying, but i think this is going to the extreme

Bullying in other grades would not effect you... That doesn't make any sense you wont have to suffer for any of their actions, you're not them and you're not their age... Yes, I have heard of this law, some people seem to think it's stupid and horrible, but others think it's a good idea. Me, I'm in the middle, but it is a good law so kids won't bully, but the thing is they might be taking it a tad to seriously. I mean like yes, of course hands down it's serious but, maybe give warnings or something?

You're taking this too seriously. You're not going to get suspended because you called a person "queer". First off, you need to make friends that won't tell on you... It's if basically repeated. If some kid has the balls to complain about you calling them a queer, they need to make some friends.
Don't suspend/arrest people for **** reasons. The law shouldn't be treated like candy, it should be treated seriously.
There are just some ****-ants in the public education system that need to be decked once in a while. It's a fact of life. Some people just don't get the hint. Schools need to recognize this, but they can't, since it would be singling out people.
My personal rule is:
1) Tell them to stop.
2) Verbal warning with clearly laid out consequence.
3) Restate clearly laid out consequence.
4) Carry out aforementioned consequence.
Also the Deans like me, so I can pretty much get away with anything. Being a senior helps as well.
I have never heard of this law even though I live in New York. I'm not surprised that these idiots would make such a law like this. Though I've had graduated school in 2006 it's got be really unsettling for new students to just not get in trouble by police. It's like when a child who has a problem of bullying asks help to a teacher, they get in trouble. This is exactly what this law is trying to do. As an American I fully oppose this law even though this law has already been passed we have to deal with it.

Schools will always start out enforcing stuff to the extreme at first, but it will die down. Then they will use it for the intended purpose. If they are taking it too extreme, then the cops will stop caring or get parents to write to representatives to get the law modified. Trust me, it does work.
It's just like after the Columbine shooting about 6 people were expelled from my High School for making jokes. One kid was in class with me and got a test back. He got a D and said, "A D? I am going to kill myself". Well, he was expelled for that because it was the week after Columbine.
Matters on the law's definition of bullying, I guess.

It's pretty annoying, but most of the teachers don't enforce it because they think it's a total joke.

kindergarten-5th grade is in one building and 6th-12th grade is in another. The whole school is very tight and everything that happens affects us
Actually, there's basically always been a "bullying" law. Just not this serious. Not that this is serious.

Then again, kids love candy.

We are talking about USA, right? Cause I agree...
