Simple question really, if you were living in the time of the civil war and you had to choose which side to support which would you choose and why? Please try and keep the fact you know who will win out of your decision making process.
I would personally choose the South because up until that point the north were almost literally screwing the south and taking all their money and spending it up in the north and west. Also the south supported states rights which is something i believe is very important.
Edit:Would like to inform people that slavery actually had nothing to do with slavery other than it was a movement that was going on at the time.
>implying the North cared about blacks.
>implying the North didn't have the worst violent race riot in the pre civil war US's history.
>implying I didn't vote for the South like a good Conservative.
I would side with the North. I am insanely anti-slavery, that's just wrong what you said IMO.
The Civil War wasnt about slavery. It was about the South losing it's representation in congress and thus alot of bills such as the tariffs were passed and those screwed the South. It was just coincidental that the anti-slavery movement was happening then. And if you would like to point out exactly what information is wrong i will kindly correct it.
Anyway, being a evil nazi commie European I'm not that up to date with my US history , but the north being the side against slavery I'm with that. The south just seems way too conservative for my tastes (not to start a politics war)
Not really i just feel that during that time period what the rest of the US was doing was even more wrong than slavery.
I know this is off a comedy website but please read this article. It has sources and facts, unlike anyone else here.
I would provide sources but i got most of my information from books and historians(face-to-face). Those sources are pretty hard to link. Also i am fully aware of everything they said in that article.
Which civil war is this? There has been 100's of civil wars.
The War for Southern Independence that occurred in north America between the United States of America and the Confederate States of America. So it's technically not a civil war if you lived during that time period
But it's NOT ABOUT SLAVERY the south seceded because the north were unfairly taxing them on imported goods which the farmers needed otherwise the northern factorys would ramp up the price of the same type of good and it would be of inferior quality. The tax money also was never used on the south it was used for railroads, canals, and other means of transportation up int the north and west.
I don't care what started it, I care about what resulted from it.
Okay but think of it in this way: Slavery would have been abolished anyway since it would no longer be in the United States of America but it might still be present inn the Confederate States of America. However with the invention of many mechanical tools that occurred sometime after the civil war the need for mass manual labor was reduced and slavery would not be needed. Thus it would most likely be abolished since many southerners actually wanted the slaves free, but couldnt because they depended on them
I would side with the North. I am insanely anti-slavery, that's just wrong what you said IMO.
Well, if you payed attention in history class, slaver was a small motive compared to the real motive for war to spark: State rights
the north were trying to screw over the south's rights, and the south got ticked off.
I suppose slavery helped for getting recruits because the rich slave owners didnt want to lose their income.
I would gtfo of there as the strategies used by them sucked and i would probably get killed easily.
If it werent for the slaver part, i would choose south, because their rights are being screwed over. however, if they won, then slavery would still exist for an even longer time.
as for the north... Those guys were screwing over the south's rights.
Also, a little reminder, the whites werent so kind to the freed slaves upon freedom. in fact, if you remember your schooling, they were treated very, very harshly.

You are now reading this. You just lost the game.
You have just read this. You are also manually breathing.
That's the thing its a guarantee. A majority of slave owners wished to free their slaves but couldnt because they needed the large force of manual labor however if they no longer needed manual labor then the slaves would become a burden. So it is guarenteed that the slaves would be freed because it is not only in the farmer's best economic interests but also something they've wanted to do for a long time.
Goddamnit how am i supposed to source 10 different live historians? Whatever ill try and find some article or something to prove it but i probablly cant find a perfect source on the internet.
Edit:Having trouble finding a non biased article on slavery so either just trust me or remember the fact that many slaveowners freed their slaves upon death.
Slavery was always the issue. Everything the South did from 1819 on was to preserve and expand slavery and limit the expansion of the "free" North.
The Missouri Compromise was about preserving and expanding slavery.
The Nullification and Secession crisis of 1832 was about protecting slavery from the expanding power of the industrial north.
The Mexican-American War was about preserving and expanding slavery, and it was a war taken by the South, for the South, with the South controlling the government and the military.
The Kansas-Nebraska Act was about preserving and expanding slavery. And it was this act, leading to "Bleeding Kansas"-- the rehearsal for the Civil War, that fractured the Northern from the Southern Democrats, destroyed the Whigs and led to the creation of the Republican Party-- an organization founded on the principle that "political compromise with slavery was no longer possible."
The South initiated the Civil War to protect slavery. That the North responded to "preserve" the Union does not change the fact that the Union could not be preserved without abolishing slavery.
In this case, war and profit coincided with the abolition of slavery.
then why was the battle crys of confederate troops never about slavery? Why did many southern politicians fight against the tariff? YOu say war and profit coincided with slavery but what you dont see is that slavery is about profit. So yes slavery was a part of the civil war but only as a way for the south to make money which was being stolen from them. which is worse making money or having money stolen from you? Yes all the laws that you mentioned were about slavery but they were also about money. The money that the south desperatlly needed to have so it could survive with high tariffs and low selling costs of their crops. So yes slaver y is a small part of the civil war. congratulations you just homed in on the ant on the picnic blanket while the rest of the ants are eating your food
Tariffs were designed to protect emerging US industrial capital. The antipathy of the South to the tariffs was based on its fear of emerging industry and a less developed fear of retaliation from other countries on its cotton.
The Nullification and Secession crisis of 1832, when the most despicable of despicable slave states, South Carolina, decided it would nullify the tariffs enacted by Congress against industrial good imported through its ports, and then claimed it would secede if the federal government attempted to interfere was really about protecting the slave system from the growth of Northern industry.
are you really sure about that? Because many Slave states didnt receive money from their crops shipped overseas they received manufactured goods. The tariffs put a tax on those goods that many farmers had trouble paying. As such they could rarly sell overseas and were forced to sell to the north where they could control the price at which it sold and many farmers could barly feed their familys. The Nullification and Secession crisis of 1832 was i agree a very rash choice but they had to to protect the small farmer. I bet you didnt know that the only reason the other states didnt join South Carolina was because they had troops with cannons pointed at them right outside where they were voting. The military pointing its guns at a state government doesnt sound so right does it? Btw the slave system was protected until abolition really started to make a difference. Then no one in the north really cared about slavery and decided they had to abolish it while they're also milking the south dry.

Oops wrong civil war.
North because I prefer the north of America over the south.

Racism aside, the South struck first. They treated it as their own revolutionary war, even though they really didn't need to.
