How could you perform a Distributed Denial of service attack off just one machine?
You seem to forget not everyone is informed about DDoS and how it works. There's plenty of people who don't even know what DDoS is, or if people do know what it is, they don't know how it's done.
Wait...it needs more then one computer? Why would someone go thought all that trouble, and money to just slow down a site....
Sorry,im not really informed with this stuff....
They use botnets (large amounts of infected computers) and just flood servers with request. A single computer can't often generate enough bandwidth to overload a server.
Plus nowadays botnets can be easily rented for a relatively small fee.
Hmm, surely there are ways of doing it off of one machine?
The way I understand it (I may be completely wrong) a DDos is done by sending (Or requesting) packets of data so rapidly that it confuses/overloads the server the site is running on and won't accept anyone else's packets.
I would imagine there was some way of doing that.
Most consumer lines don't have the bandwidth (5-50Mb/s), while most servers will run Gigabit+ lines which can absorb an attempted DOS from one host.
Wait, somebody can actually do that? Rather immature.
Not really, no. I'm just being puerile.
ACTUAL FACTS TIME:
Truth be told, there's just been a higher-than-normal level of DDoS attempts today. The loading screen is just part of a system designed to mitigate it, and while slightly annoying, it's incredibly useful in helping us make things better. We appreciate your patience in the meantime!

It's sad to see that some ten year old doesn't have anything better to do than to ruin other people's experience.

I don't mind the occasional browser checker thing, I know it's helping a ton for the forums. At least they know I'm innocent. I don't even know how to DDoS anyway, so I'm definitely safe.
Also, you got me there! xD I actually thought that guy was going to do that.

As in that there's a normal level of DDoS attempts? That's more than 0 per day?

I have discovered a truly remarkable proof of this, which this margin is too small to contain.

This would not surprise me in the slightest. I'm willing to bet there's a lot of people on the ban list, and a few of them probably aren't happy about it so they resort to childish tactics.
95% of teens would scream if Justin Beiber was about to jump of the top of the Empire State Building. If you are in the 5% that would grab a seat and some popcorn and yell JUMP! JUMP! JUMP! post this into your sig.
It's not checking your browser as in snooping. It's checking to see if there are multiple requests from the browser and the IP the browser is associated with to view the site.
One would think that if your IP passed the test it wouldn't have to keep doing this every single time - it is highly annoying to have to go through this check for every page or topic I want to view.
In fact I may just stop visiting for a week or so because of this.
I agree that it is annoying, but would you rather the forum be inaccessible, or deal with a few seconds delay?
This is not going to happen for a week by any means. This precaution should be removed by tomorrow (unless the DDoS continues). If it bothers you that much, just wait it out.

If this were the case, it'd be easily exploited by whoever is ddosing. Use the forum once normally, suddenly no more protection.

The site isn't really loading noticeably slower for me, but I started getting these tonight, and was wondering what they were. Sometimes they kick me to the main news page, which is irritating, but I'll live.

It's nothing to laugh about. DDoS'ing can cause serious problems with a site/forum if it's prolonged as this seems to be.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop.
