Not too long ago, MCF was a pretty cool place. Now...I'm not so sure. It seems like the quality of everything has just been in decline.
I think the on-topic sections speak for themselves. The majority of threads there are just recycled filth that don't provide any sufficient discussion.
The off-topic sections also seem to be heading down a similar path, albeit not as drastically. Though there's a bit more to it.
Now, I'm sure you're all somewhat familiar with what happened with the chat threads, MCFT, Official Chat, and all that jazz. It seems that a lot of the "OTers" here have abandoned MCF either in favor of one of the aforementioned sites or off somewhere else on their own accord. There's lot's of reasons for this, but I think the main one is the current moderation. Apparently, some magical Curse wizard somewhere decided that they needed more moderators for MCF, so they did the most logical thing and started accepting random 10-year-olds who've been here for a month (that's sarcasm, for those who apparently need to be informed). Now, the focus of the mods seems to be to create the most "family-friendly environment" with a cookie-cutter way of posting. Before, cursing and the such wasn't allowed, and I was fine with that, but now people are getting infracted/banned/etc. for anything mildly suggestive. I mean seriously, grow up. The world's not going to end if you're experienced to a little bit of reality.
Also (this is more geared towards the community in itself), not many people seem to have a sense of humor. Or, at least, a sense of humor past anything very basic. I don't know, perhaps this is just something I've experienced personally, but I feel as if everyone takes everything too seriously.
I don't feel inclined to leave MCF just yet because this is a really nice, niche sort of community with some pretty awesome users, but it looks like it's starting to decay into a mash of corporate, ignorant, redundant...
"The world's not going to end if you're experienced to a little bit of reality"
I personally can not agree to this, Its a site for ages that go children and up.
(8 to blah blah) I think, its been 1 year since I've posted
and some families just don't want there children going to a site where cussing is presented to them, religious families, strict families, or just overprotective parents in general.
I agree its reality, but really - its there right to not expose there children to it and just stop them from coming to the site and that is where the rule came in
For getting infraction, banned, ect ,for mild stuff; agreed... they should warn you the first 3 times depending on severity,
but if you continue to commit the crime you should be punished.
Communities tend to degrade over time, but Minecraft is still going strong, and the forums aren't really on a track to disaster any time soon. It's nothing to worry about, at least.

Such is expected, people will find or think of things that have already been done. History does repeat itself. When everything has been repeated, they move on and repeat elsewhere in a new place.
The off-topic sections also seem to be heading down a similar path, albeit not as drastically. Though there's a bit more to it.
Off Topic acts more as a Container to well contain stuff not related to Minecraft. It was a method to say in order to control the non Minecraft related material from burying the other actual Minecraft threads. As well sort of a spam container. SCT used to be a good place but degradation happened over time and now no one cares. A group of us wrote a large guide about computer parts for general public who constantly ask for help to buy or build a computer. Did such work pay for itself? No, it did not unfortunately so it was clear the section was fairly dead.
Before, cursing and the such wasn't allowed, and I was fine with that, but now people are getting infracted/banned/etc. for anything mildly suggestive. I mean seriously, grow up. The world's not going to end if you're experienced to a little bit of reality.
Rule system is lenient enough as is. Trolls still frolic as they wish, annoying pests still frolic as they wish, the idiots are populating and creating better idiots. Note none of this is direct at anything or anyone, why, because welcome to the Internet. It is nice to be able to read something without seeing poorly butchered English that consists of just swearing and cap locks.
Also (this is more geared towards the community in itself), not many people seem to have a sense of humor. Or, at least, a sense of humor past anything very basic. I don't know, perhaps this is just something I've experienced personally, but I feel as if everyone takes everything too seriously.
I have no humor. I neither cry nor laugh. I show no emotions for anything, even death of relatives I just shrug shoulders and move on.
Eye for a Eye ideal. Everyone presumes you are acting serious and auto-negate to acting serious back. Other words, always act serious. Sarcasm is easy to spot if you know and comprehend what you read well.
In my own personal opinion we could have avoided losing a lot of the more popular OTers if they hadn't shut down the chat thread.
No, such thread was just for a collection centered of spam. It was from start temporary. Mostly was used for racking up post count and reputation, but nothing productive.
An no, they mostly got bored/tired and moved on. Majority of them I speak with even still.

Yeah I have learned the hard way that my sarcasm is not welcome here.

Oh, I'm sorry that we (the staff) are pulling this community down by dedicating hours upon hours to keep this place clean and in order. Just because people are ignorant and don't know how to read doesn't automatically make us the bad guys. Grow up! If you went and murdered someone right now, what do you think is gonna happen? The whole idea that moderators need to stop slamming people with infractions for breaking insanely easy-to-follow rules is dumb and it needs to stop. As long as you continue to break the rules, don't expect to get away with it.
Regarding OTters, does it look like anyone cares about them? This community is focused on Minecraft. We could completely remove off topic and it wouldn't be a problem for anyone except the people in OT. We don't rely on OT to keep this community running and quite honestly, if we did get rid of OT tomorrow, I don't think I would miss anyone there because most of them are just so negative and rude in the first place (this is why so many of the OTters have been banned or been issued infractions an absurd amount of times).
Regarding swearing and inappropriate stuff, look, parents don't want their kids to hear that crap. As you can tell by the insane amount of prejudice such as the "10 year old" references, a lot of our community is young. Sometimes it's a good thing, sometimes it's a bad thing. Either way, is it healthy to hear people swear and curse all day long? I used to never swear, but as I've gotten older, it's become very common language at my school and just from hearing it all day long, I eventually started swearing. Swearing is not a good thing, and I'm pretty sure you can have a normal conversation without it. Many of the OTters also left (I'd say more of a rage quit) because of the swearing ban. Did anyone care that they left? Was their a community outcry? No.
The only thing that drags MCF down is the 12 year old kids on here, who act and think they're mature. It's pretty pathetic and shows how many losers there are on this site. Recycled filth is something you see everywhere.
And how old are you? 13? 14? Not all 12 year olds are immature, and most of the time, the one making the prejudice is the one who is the most immature.
For getting infraction, banned, ect ,for mild stuff; agreed... they should warn you the first 3 times depending on severity, but if you continue to commit the crime you should be punished.
You killed someone today.
You go into hiding.
The cops look at some security video and find out it was you.
The cops come to your house with a search warrant.
They find the exact gun that was used to kill the other person.
You're taken to court and you plead guilty to all charges.
Do you think the judge is gonna say: "Well, I'll let you off with a warning. If it happens two more times, you're going to jail."
(Commenting on the OTers)
Most of them (as the name suggests) spent their time in the Off Topic and before they shot the Chat Thread down they banned cursing, which a lot of people hated and then the mods and other people were like hay, kids are on here. Now GOT is like a pit for love issues and ads xD.
Also (this is more geared towards the community in itself), not many people seem to have a sense of humor. Or, at least, a sense of humor past anything very basic. I don't know, perhaps this is just something I've experienced personally, but I feel as if everyone takes everything too seriously.
Depends on what forum section you go on. Suggestions: if a suggest is so obvious it's fake like alien wood people will most likely laugh at it. I do agree some of the forum has no sense of humor.

I do believe the forums are going downhill, as far as community goes. Back when I first registered, there were many things to talk about, and it was a fun experience. But now, the forums are slowly being filled with useless topics that are very uninteresting, and boring. For example, many people post minor things about their worlds, looking for _____, mods this, textures that, and many other boring things that fill up the forums.
Not too long ago, MCF was a pretty cool place. Now...I'm not so sure. It seems like the quality of everything has just been in decline.
I still rather like the place.
I think the on-topic sections speak for themselves. The majority of threads there are just recycled filth that don't provide any sufficient discussion.
You'll see that on... pretty much any forum ever. There will come a point that pretty much everything has been discussed, so things repeat because of new people. If you don't like their new view on the same subjects, that's your problem. I like it.
The off-topic sections also seem to be heading down a similar path, albeit not as drastically. Though there's a bit more to it.
The off-topic sections aren't the focus of the forum, they never will be. They have to abide by the same rules as the sections that this forum is about.
Now, I'm sure you're all somewhat familiar with what happened with the chat threads, MCFT, Official Chat, and all that jazz. It seems that a lot of the "OTers" here have abandoned MCF either in favor of one of the aforementioned sites or off somewhere else on their own accord.
That's fine. In fact, that's good. If you're on a site that doesn't support your interest, why stay? Why sit around and complain that this forum doesn't suit your need when there are thousands of forums designed with specific focuses that do?
Besides, I don't think we lost anything of value by removing the chat thread. That thing was a disgusting piece of spam that most of the time had people insulting staff or complaining about staff.
There's lot's of reasons for this, but I think the main one is the current moderation.
I think the main reason is they don't get their way on everything and can't take it.
Apparently, some magical Curse wizard somewhere decided that they needed more moderators for MCF, so they did the most logical thing and started accepting random 10-year-olds who've been here for a month (that's sarcasm, for those who apparently need to be informed).
Or they could stop acting like random 10-year-olds throwing a tantrum.
Now, the focus of the mods seems to be to create the most "family-friendly environment" with a cookie-cutter way of posting. Before, cursing and the such wasn't allowed, and I was fine with that, but now people are getting infracted/banned/etc. for anything mildly suggestive.
What do you think family friendly means? It means suitable for all ages, so of course suggestive posts are getting removed. And honestly, "mildly suggestive" means different things to different people, so for all I know you mean someone talking about sex but using "code words" or something stupid like that.
I mean seriously, grow up. The world's not going to end if you're experienced to a little bit of reality.
I mean, seriously, grow up. The world's not going to end because you have to follow some rules.
Also (this is more geared towards the community in itself), not many people seem to have a sense of humor. Or, at least, a sense of humor past anything very basic. I don't know, perhaps this is just something I've experienced personally, but I feel as if everyone takes everything too seriously.
Or maybe you have different interests and they find serious discussion entertaining and you find jokes entertaining.
I don't feel inclined to leave MCF just yet because this is a really nice, niche sort of community with some pretty awesome users, but it looks like it's starting to decay into a mash of corporate, ignorant, redundant...crap.
Part of what i think is happening here, is some rank descrimination -_-, i mean now i only see people who have 100+ posts who make a topic actually get a reply to there topic, i made 5 and i still havent gotten any help D:
One of the largest appealing factors of the Minecraft Forums is that it's a place where everyone, be they 8 years old or 56 years old, can interact and view the Minecraft community's content.
Without us removing mature content, or even suggestive content, and without us cleaning out the profane messages that are posted, there'd be a massive age bracket being lost because parents don't feel that their child should be on such a forum. To allow any member of Minecraft, or someone who is interested, view the forums safely is very important.

Wow. Didn't realize that. Though there's not really that much I could've searched for. Regardless, I think this has picked up more recently in more severe ways such that another topic is needed.
I don't know why you thought bringing up OTters as a major point is a valid move. Their huge post count, perhaps, giving the illusion that they've contributed more to the forums than people in the upper sections, even though it was mostly racked up by posting in a chat thread, where nearly any half-thought-out and/or borderline spam posts go?
I mean, it's not natural for people who never leave the Off-Topic section of a forum to have more than fifty times more posts than an average member, so I'd understand if they were affected by some kind of delusions of grandeur, as if their little section is somehow "better" than the rest of the forum, or even "an essential part of the forum" and thus the staff should go easy on them. I mean, I've seen posts suggesting that their section be treated as an entirely different forum, having their own set of rules as well as administrators and moderators - voted by popularity instead of competence, of course - which is, simply put, ridiculous. But I digress.
You should remember that OT, or even OTters, are not the main focus of the forum. Those people never left their little comfortable hole in Off-Topic; some never ever left the chat thread. Personally, I see them as just an entirely different community from Minecraft's that was simply allowed to hang around until they became a problem.
This forum is mainly focused on Minecraft. Don't treat OTters as if they were somehow more important than the communities of the upper boards. If you've only ever experienced General Off-Topic and a handful of the upper boards, you cannot say the entirety of the site is "turning to crap".
Which brings me to the next point...
Again, you forget the main focus of this forum: Minecraft, a game directed at all ages. It's natural to forget that after hanging around Off-Topic for extended periods of time, but it's a fact.
Now, riddle me this: Why exactly should a kid be prevented from coming to this forum, one of the (if not THE) largest resource sites for Minecraft, by an overprotective parent who saw that swearing was okay, for example? Because members don't know any other of the countless ways of putting emphasis into their post? Or so they can freely make filthy jokes or otherwise suggestive posts?
Are you implying you need to make suggestive posts more than someone needs to actually visit this site? Because that's an extremely selfish implication.
Also, moderators don't have a say on the rules, they're simply button pushers. If anything, you should be going after the administrators (or the "magical Curse wizard") for this.
Most kids still haven't developed a sense of humor, or (directed at Squidling's post) simply haven't learned about sarcasm. The fact that it's harder to detect in text than in spoken word doesn't help either.
I have no doubt that some might actually be too overprotective or obsessed about what is being joked about to be able to tolerate the joke, but I'd rather not take too many steps in that direction...

For the above posts, I agree that G.O.T is a miscellaneous section of the forums (not that that is a bad thing). However, if we are talking about the Off-Topic section as a whole (General Gaming, SCT, Forum Games etc.), it is different. If we didn't have the SCT forums, Discussion would be crammed with 'I need a computer that will not lag' and 'Is an Alienware good for minecraft?'. Also, these sections do produce a decent amount of ad revenue for the forums/Curse. While they shouldn't be prioritized over the rest of forums, they are definitely worth keeping so people will want to stay.
Also, I think that parents shouldn't be so ridiculously overprotective in the first place (the world isn't all gumdrops and butterflies, and the longer your child believes that it is, the bigger hit it's going to be when they find out it's not, among a long list of other things), but that's a whole 'nother topic. And if you were to so overprotective, you probably wouldn't want them to be experienced to the internet or technology or anything that's occurring in the real world at all. Just saying.
The cops look at some security video and find out it was you.

Hopefully you see my point.
Yes, because saying something on the internet is just like murder. But if we're going with exagerated real life examples:
The speed limit is 55.
You're going about 56.
A cop pulls you over.
He pulls his gun out and tells you to step out of the car.
You get out and ask him what the problem is, and he shoots you in the legs.
You go to trial and end up getting the death sentence.
Hopefully you see my point.
Oh, and also, "Is MCF Turning Not Good?" Are you freaking serious? God forbid that I say the word "crap". And you replace it with "not good"? What is this, 1984? And you didn't even bother to censor it in the other posts. This is a prime example of what I'm talking about here. I seriously hope this is some kind of joke. It's probably not though, being this is MCF.

Most people I know agree with this. However, the Minecraft Forums are not a platform to fight social justice battles. Whether we disagree with parenting techniques or not, there's nothing we can do to change it. Sure, a stand could be taken and swearing could be allowed so parents have to harden up, but what would that do? It wouldn't change the parent's attitude, it would just mean they wouldn't let their child on these forums, depriving them of a resource and community they may desire in terms of minecraft.

While I agree with you that the previous example of murder was over the top, your example is also over the top in terms of punishment.
In this situation, if you went over the speeding limit and it was your first offense, you get an informal reminder. For subsequent offenses, you get written warnings that don't actually do anything. When you get to your fourth offense, and your third written warning, you get your driver's license revoked for three days. After your initial two written warnings, the faster you go over the speed limit (so the more danger you put others in), the longer your drivers license is revoked for.
This system makes complete sense to me. The driver has been told repeatedly, both informally and formally, that going over the speed limit, even only by one mile/hour, is unacceptable by the police. It is not too hard to keep just under the speed limit, and not risk a warning. However if one were to find themselves incapable of not going over if they tried to keep just under the limit, then it would be best if they were to drive even slower, or not at all.

The example was supposed to be partly over-exaggerated. And the use of example is to show that the policy in question is ridiculous by comparing it to a real-life example of it's implication. Of course you wouldn't be punished like that for going one mile over the speed limit. That's the point.

MCF has been bad for awhile. All the minecraft sections are filled with little kids and nonsense, off topic has become old and repetitive and also filled with little kids, and ever since the chat thread has left, several sites have been up to replace it. PPNS is a safe haven of people on this forum that actually have a sliver of a brain cell left.
The moderation team is rather poor, as some have brought up. I see many people with little to no experience given power for absolutely no reason at all. They don't understand reason, they don't understand the context of conversation, and they don't understand how rules apply in certain circumstances. I know all to well the dilemma of adding a forum admin that actually knows what they're talking about to the PM conversation of my suspension just for the admin to remove my infraction because the moderator was wrong. Now, citricsquid has turned the forum into crap with the idea of "a family-friendly forum", which is what this place never really was in off-topic. The amount of people infracted for cursing and evading the censor in the first month or so was off the charts. It's a real shame that citricsquid let down the loyal community held within off-topic and PPNS, because now many have moved on.
Most people I know agree with this. However, the Minecraft Forums are not a platform to fight social justice battles. Whether we disagree with parenting techniques or not, there's nothing we can do to change it.

It is nice to be able to read something without seeing poorly butchered English that consists of just swearing and cap locks.
No, such thread was just for a collection centered of spam. It was from start temporary. Mostly was used for racking up post count and reputation, but nothing productive.
An no, they mostly got bored/tired and moved on. Majority of them I speak with even still.
No.
And how old are you? 13? 14? Not all 12 year olds are immature, and most of the time, the one making the prejudice is the one who is the most immature.
Hopefully you see my point.
Most of them (as the name suggests) spent their time in the Off Topic and before they shot the Chat Thread down they banned cursing, which a lot of people hated and then the mods and other people were like hay, kids are on here. Now GOT is like a pit for love issues and ads xD.
Depends on what forum section you go on. Suggestions: if a suggest is so obvious it's fake like alien wood people will most likely laugh at it. I do agree some of the forum has no sense of humor.

HELP CAPSLOCK KEY FELL OFF IT SWITCHES ON AND OFF, HELP PLS.
I still rather like the place.
You'll see that on... pretty much any forum ever. There will come a point that pretty much everything has been discussed, so things repeat because of new people. If you don't like their new view on the same subjects, that's your problem. I like it.
The off-topic sections aren't the focus of the forum, they never will be. They have to abide by the same rules as the sections that this forum is about.
I think the main reason is they don't get their way on everything and can't take it.
Or they could stop acting like random 10-year-olds throwing a tantrum.
What do you think family friendly means? It means suitable for all ages, so of course suggestive posts are getting removed. And honestly, "mildly suggestive" means different things to different people, so for all I know you mean someone talking about sex but using "code words" or something stupid like that.
I mean, seriously, grow up. The world's not going to end because you have to follow some rules.
Or maybe you have different interests and they find serious discussion entertaining and you find jokes entertaining.
That's nice, but I disagree.
It's hard to follow your dreams when you run from your nightmares. --
Without us removing mature content, or even suggestive content, and without us cleaning out the profane messages that are posted, there'd be a massive age bracket being lost because parents don't feel that their child should be on such a forum. To allow any member of Minecraft, or someone who is interested, view the forums safely is very important.
Wow. Didn't realize that. Though there's not really that much I could've searched for. Regardless, I think this has picked up more recently in more severe ways such that another topic is needed.
I agree with Darth Trogo:
Also, I think that parents shouldn't be so ridiculously overprotective in the first place (the world isn't all gumdrops and butterflies, and the longer your child believes that it is, the bigger hit it's going to be when they find out it's not, among a long list of other things), but that's a whole 'nother topic. And if you were to so overprotective, you probably wouldn't want them to be experienced to the internet or technology or anything that's occurring in the real world at all. Just saying.
I usually have a neutral/undecided standpoint on things. And yes, I am part Swiss.
don't expect me to be on much.
But it's not like there's a problem with there being swearing in every post or something of that severity. They don't need to nit-pick everything to keep a good image.
The example was supposed to be partly over-exaggerated. And the use of example is to show that the policy in question is ridiculous by comparing it to a real-life example of it's implication. Of course you wouldn't be punished like that for going one mile over the speed limit. That's the point.

Sorry for party-rocking.
I'm a dingus once.
