An annoying deception I repeatedly see in the Minecraft Survival Servers forum is advertisements for greylisted servers claiming "No Whitelist". The implication of the statement "No Whitelist" is that you can log on and play with no need to post in a topic or fill out an application or any garbage like that. Now sure, a greylist is not *technically* a whitelist, but it prevents you from doing anything on the server, so you might as well be not playing at all.
My point is that any form of "list" that restricts players from playing on the server unless they post in the topic should be considered a whitelist and as such you cannot claim to be a no whitelist server when you do in fact need to apply to play. It wastes everyone's time and all it does is earn the server owner a few extra clicks from people who prefer freedom when playing a sandbox game online.

Hello, my name is Anon_Player, but you can call me Anon
In my own personal opinion, there are two forms of greylist:
A greylist where you do not get to immediately play the full game
A greylist where you have to apply
As for ones that just immediately don't let you play, I think that's fine. However, the ladder of these two is a bit mis-perceptive, I would agree. Requiring an application in order to begin playing is a bit closer to the definition of a whitelist than anything else (with that being you apply before playing or don't play at all). In my opinion, I would nab it as false advertising, but I can see what others think.
