Hey everyone. I'm normally over in the texture pack section, but we've been all up and arms about a coming change to the forums that will effect the modding community as much as us.
The entire mapping and modding section is being restructured so that the various categories have their own subsections, including Bugs, comments/suggestions, help, and download. Although old posts will not be restructured, and new posts must be made in the appropriate categories.
These changes are scheduled to be implemented BEFORE 1.8 arrives! We have very little time to get this reversed!
As Dante summarizes, these changes mean the following:
PROBLEMS WITH THE CURSE PROPOSED RESTRUCTURING
The proposed 4(5?) way split of mod entries will destroy the current community structure and discussion in the section.
The splitting of the actual entry from the discussion about it is an exercise in futility. It produces multiple entries for the SE, disrupts user experience when accessing the section and impedes community feedback on a certain entry by having the user go to a different section to comment on said entry.
Splitting the content on MC version based formatting will produce a multitude of search engine entries given the current and historical MC development cycle and also introduce a variety of problems in certain projects that are either community/fan driven for update or rely on community feedback TO update.
We understand the planned use of tags for optimizing search queries for each section according to MC version and type of content, but sadly thats not how the userbase searches for entries right now (and it will be very had to change that in the foreseeable future).
The introduction of that many sections will have an adverse effect on the current sticky section topics, both in their content creation/addition and feedback aspects.
Content contribution for new mod creators is gravely inhibited by the proposed complexity of the restructuring. If with the current, basic structure needed for a new entry we have maybe 15 entries per day that do not comply with it in some/all aspects, just take the time and think please what will happen after the proposed structure takes effect.
The addition of the version, type of content and additional rule filters in the mod section will have a grave effect on the amount of work needed by the volunteer sectional moderators to try and have the community to adapt and preserve said filters when adding content.
*edited to replace 'texture pack' with mod, and to delete entries irrelevant to the modding community.
Additionally:
Say there are 25 noob mods posted everyday. At the moment, that means 25 new threads.
With the proposed changes every small, simple mod will need 4-5 subthreads.
Multiply that by 25 and you now have 100-125 new threads being added to the already overloaded servers every day.
this is fukin retarded :dry.gif: i like it how it is and it should stay like it!
wut ever happen about our inpounen (dam my terrarible grammer D:)awenser me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! T.T
No offence but they're doing their job professionally and they're hosting this site for free. If they go through a major screw-up, they could always restore it back to the original. I say we should give them a shot, they deserve it for hosting this for free (for users).

Thanks. I'm fairly experience when it comes to changes being made on the forums. If you have any questions about getting word out just PM me. :smile.gif:
Change is good. The bukkit forums did something sort of similar to this, and it is far better. no more "the mod do3sn't wurk!" Or at least far less of it. There is an actual bug submission area. cleaner for the forum, better for the devs.
Let them make their change. IF you feel that strongly about it, migrate to a new forum. I don't like curse much myself, so would be eager to follow to a new forum.

Exactly. And they're the bosses (literally xD). If we don't let them update, we might miss a great opportunity, however, if we let them update and don't like it, they can always go back.
Besides, if they are really determinent, we can't stop them.

For you guys, with all your various bugs etc, then yes, there are pros and cons.
But for the rest of us, it is unnecessary and cumbersome, and at the moment our main goal is to get everyone talking about this (which didn't happen before, as the decision was made without any community input whatsoever).
Also, think about it this way:

It's not just a matter of red tape, its a matter of curse shooting itself in the foot.

It appears I've been understanding this restructure stuff wrong.
I now completely agree with you; this'd injure Minecraft Forums badly.
whats wrong with the way it is now... it seems to me that this change is infact to confuse people about where to ask for support.. and put more load on those actually trying to help people... i like discussion about a mod all in one place so i can talk about support/new features/ etc all in 1 organized post
I feel that the forums should be as simple as possible for newer users. That would mean this would over-complicate everything that is current. I see very few good things coming out of the forum change, and a hurricane of bad things, headed our way.

Okay, you all are overreacting.
Change is NOT a horrible thing.
The released mods forum as it is is just as horribly broken as the worst case scenario you're making this out to be.
It needs separation.
Not separation intramod, per se, but mod categories at the damn least.
All of those "FIRST MOD!!!!!!eleven" threads need to go somewhere else.
I would say they can go to the abyss, personally, but I know it's worthless to try and argue that.
I never released my first mod, or even my second or third or fourth. Hell, the only thing I -have- released are compatibility patches between others' mods.
Quality is the key, not quantity.
Some people just refuse to understand that, and I cannot fathom the false logic they've got in their heads.

Indeed. Bukkit forums made 2 seperate sections for plugins, Release and Submission. Mod releasers posted their stuff on Submission and moderators moved plugins that were complete and properly made into release section. That worked out great. And if a change is already made, another one can be made.
Before you do anything, read this announcement:

We in the texture pack community have already begun a discussion of this matter (here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/604637-discussion-the-forum-is-being-restructured/) and a petition for it's amendment (here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/605413-community-proposal-for-restructuring-the-texture-pack-section/), but we need your help.
The modding community is far larger than the texture pack community, and therefore will carry more weight with the administrators.
Please join us in protesting these outrageous and illogical changes!
The forum is in need of some serious structuring. There are simply too many threads in one category (mods)

You're welcome.
We're hoping to get the modding community involved, because you guys are larger and have more bargaining power (so to speak) with the mods.

She probably got banned for re-posting a moved thread. That's spamming.
