Contrary to what you may think, running web-servers that get 200 million page view per month is not cheap, especially when there are full time staff dedicated to running and maintaining those servers- staff who need to feed their families.
They wouldn't be so bad if they didn't take so long to load. I can see the difference where Chrome's loading icon goes away after ~10 seconds on a normal page and ~60 seconds on a page with the background image. Coupled with making the background unclickable it's really annoying. Considering a lot of websites with many more page views get along fine with top banners and maybe side banners, I don't see why Curse thinks a full on background image is a reasonable choice.
