Then again I don't really support democracy anymore because the average person sucks, and makes important uninformed decisions based on the surface value of information they're given.
Can I quote this man? Thats the greatest statement ever.
It would seem our government agrees, which is why neither Canada nor USA have democracies.
On topic, I think the overall point the OP makes is right but even still. Given the quality of members this forum usually sees the mods sort of have to be strict.
Everyone realizes this forums sucks, but what can you really do about it? This forum isn't a democracy, it's controlled by the admins with little to no input. Hell, there are so many bugs that have been asked to fix and they simply just turned their backs.
I think those mods should come from active community members, not random polite people no one has heard of. Active community members obviously have an interest in actually keeping the forum in top shape, hence why they are active.
Exactly. To paraphrase the Declaration of Independence: Authority should derive from the consent of the governed, not from the threat of force.
OP, prepare to be called a troll for your valuable input.
I agree a lot of the mods think this is way too serious.
Namely Piratebay.
I replied to a thread from a spambot, saying something like "the robots approach", boom warning. I was just trying to have fun, but I get a warning. What's the point of warning for that? It bumps it up + mods are more likely to see it + they can lock it and get on without having to send edits and warnings. Mod edit: User was warned for not liking Piratebay and expressing opinion
Agreed. Completely.
I did get a warning the other day, and I do agree it was semi-deserved(mostly because I was just anticipating the warning after replying more than once), but honestly...the other 20 people that replied to the spam thread and posted more than I did got no warning.
Agreed.SO.DAMN.MUCH.
Anyone remember the 'Notch:Wolves are a bad idea' thread?
Oh,the kiddies just attacked that one mercilessly. OH YOU DONT AGREE WITH SOMETHING NOTCH SAID,YOU MUST BE A TROLL. IM GOING TO POST IN YOUR TOPIC SAYING 'DONT LIKE IT DONT USE IT' EVEN THOUGH THAT HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR ARGUMENT.HARHAR.
Alright, amazingly, this thread has remained civil and polite, and had some very good things to say. Not what I expected given the original poster's name! So, thanks for that. I'm going to unlock this and move it to Forum Discussion, where it belongs.
And just to chime in with my own opinions, there's a lot that needs changing, but I don't think mod strictness is one of those things. The only thing is that it feels like we're fighting the tide, sometimes.
I think many of these complaints about favoritism stems from the fact that often mods only check the reported comments, and don't have time to read through the thread in search of more rule-breaking posts, like off-topic chatter and such, so if you're reported and the other guy is not, the other guy might get away with it. It sucks, but, until we get caught up, that's probably just a fact of life.
That's about it, I guess. Just, remember that, as far as I know, each one of us is here to ensure that everyone here gets the best forum experience possible, and we'd all much rather work with you to accomplish this.

Can you explain how you work with us? You admitted, at least until you get caught up, you respond only to posts that are reported. What if someone has a grudge and just watches for somone to post something that violates a rule? Off-topic is probably the most easily abused.
If I'm in a thread talking about lightning and someone mentioned they need a new computer and that gets reported for off-topic and that person gets warned. That's not cool.
The above is an example..but I have seen it happen.
wow. it came back.
i guess we do have a bearing on something.
but if you think about it, we can all be pretty much 100% sure that this thread is just going to get bumped over into non-existance and be another garbage thread just like the millions of others on here.
it was good fun discussing with you all.
too bad we didnt start a revolution.
yes sir.
and you know how you told me to throw up a proxy?
looks like i was a tad late.

darn hey.
ya got me.
since having an opinion is illegal, why dont you permaban my ip (considering you obviously have it on record) when i come back on may 4th because im not going to stop voicing what i believe. pretty much everything i do on here someone finds a way to make it look like i broke the rules ..
I appreciate the sectional moderator approval. My main issue with the state of these forums is the users themselves, and not to agree (please don't be stupid and accuse me of trying to agree with the sectionals,) but the moderators really aren't the problem, and people make mistakes. What needs to be cut down on and changed is the maturity of users in the forums, 95% of users attempt to be "mature" or whatever vague interpretation they have made of that, and in the process end up calling someone else immature for some random, ambiguous reason. People need to realize that the word "troll" is ridiculous, and shouldn't be used in any capacity.
Being moved here guarantees it will be seen by people who care and more staff members, so it's a good thing actually :3

If somebody stalks someone to report their rule-breaking posts, then their rule-breaking posts get dealt with. What is wrong with someone actively looking for rule-breaking posts? :ohmy.gif:

To add on to that, we often get the complaint that X person didn't get warned/banned for Y post, when in fact that post was never reported. If you see an infraction, report it, otherwise we'll have a hard time seeing it as we're not automatons scanning every topic n-n

Eh? Who?
i am ArnoldPalmer. you may have seen me around the survival boards.
i got banned because i posted a meme in a rage thread.
i made this account to try to voice the community and fix the mod problem. but i guess that didnt work out as planned

The OP, he made an alternate account with the intentions of ban evasion, but he overlooked the fact that the Sectionals can look at IP a addresses.
i knew that they could see my IP.
i was just kind of waiting for it to happen. and i wasnt trying to avoid a ban, i just couldnt post on my normal account considering its banned for a week.

I assure you that having an opinion is not going to get yourself banned, and I invite you to continue to share your opinions when you return. Since I banned your main account earlier today, I can certainly understand why you're using this one to post. And yeah, we have the ability to record IP's. it's somewhat vital, at times...

What I was attempting to admit was that OFTEN all we respond to are posts that are reported. I always make an effort to check briefly to make sure that the offending post is a singular problem, and if not, I'll read the other posts more in-depth, but I admit that I've missed things before, usually due to skimming too quickly.
What I mean by working with you is that we both have the same goals. I am always interested in considering what others have to say, in case I have overlooked something and am not doing things in the best way possible, but I will also admit that I often find it hard to see past my own viewpoints. If you're sure I'm doing something wrong, I invite you all to let me know, and if I continue to do it wrong, I invite you all to continue telling me. I would request that you consider my responses, as well, and I'll consider yours.
But yeah, worknig with you. The best way to improve this forum would be, as far as I can tell, for every poster that cares about the quality of this place to ensure they have high standards for their own posts and rule-following (I think the rules are pretty reasonable and comprehensive) and to report the non-rule-following posts for the mods to assist with. Keep in mind that warnings aren't meant as punishments, but requests for change, and bans are meant as attention-grabbing techniques.
And I'm sorry for the concern of the thread dying of lack of attention, but really, I don't see how that's a good enough excuse to put it in the wrong section. Many important threads end up here, and the people who need to know that, know that.
@Shairn. First of all, I remember you before you were a mod! Just saying.
Moving on to what you actually posted, although this may be viewed by more... influential people, it loses its mass, which is apparently the only way anything can be done around here. I've seem some REALLY good suggestions and discussions, but because they don't gain enough attention, they get thrown away into the forum's dark void.
If anything, this thread being moved here guarantees its death.
Threads that war worthy of interest hardly die out in this section as there is hardly anything to bury them under, therefor this thread will not die until the issue is resolved :3

The point of a ban is so you can't post on these forums until it's lifted. If you make another account to post, you are effectively evading a ban :tongue.gif:

"To be heard" is the ultimate lie the mods feed us.
Look at how many people have complained about the quality of the forums over the last six months.
How do the admins and mods reply?
"We are working on it" or "We are busy".
Some mods have done NOTHING for months, and some visit every day, just to read threads, not to fix up the forums.
Not only is the quality of most of the mods extremely low, but there simply aren't enough mods compared to how many people are on the forum, and how many join each day.
Just my two cents.
Which mods have done nothing? If you know of any mod slacking off, do report them to the staff n-n
Also, complaining about the quality of the forum is very vague. Specific issues need to be addressed for us to know what's wrong :ohmy.gif:
