1) i have been gaming since i was 10 - i have been gaming 2x longer then most kids have been alive today.
2) i have lost friends that i use to game with due to old age.
3) i have played games with my friends who i meet thru the internet, sharing a like for a perticular game, for more then 15 years
4) the oldest gamer i know right now is 75 playing BC2
5) my age is 39 going on 25 ( as per my wife) once a kid - always a kid
6) i will play games the rest of my life - i just hope for a hardwire plugin so i can control my system with my brain like i think i should now ( I SHOT HIM - ARG!!!! *wife laughts again at me*)
7) typos are my enemy
8) I really enjoy the fact that the internet gives little kids the anamity (sp?) to hid behind, so that they show their true selves quickly and they can be ignored, forgoten about about jsut as fast. They love being macho, yet it shows how little they know and how tough they are not.
i have developed some very close friend from my gaming years. We are like brother and sisters to each other, closer then real family at times. My dream is to never out grow games. That would mean i got old and cranky.
Live it up - you can buy the computer you want, with the controlers you want, and play the games you want, all with out saying "mom/dad i want...." Man i love being growen up!
The only way a gaming forum on the internet would be civil, intelligent, and mature would be if that forum was private, required an invitation to it, and the moderation was harsh.
Such a forum would have only a handful of participants. It could also exist for minecraft. Someone need only host a domain, toss PHPBB on it and start inviting quality posters. Building your own community is not difficult, you just can't expect it to be large.
The single point of failure (imo) when it comes to forums such as this one cannot be put on the moderators. It's the community nearly in whole that breeds the behaviors this thread detests. Feeding the trolls is the only reason the trolls are still here. If people would simply ignore trolls, report them, and let them quietly be deleted/locked/banned the problem would go away.
But even the many of the smarter, more mature among us feed the trolls from time to time. The simple fact is, we love them. If we didn't love them, we'd make our own elitist invite only community and forget about the troll infested cesspool that is public forums. But we won't, because the trolls entertain us. We like to think we're better than them, we like to mercilessly "own" them in verbal debates.
TL;DR: The thing is, you can't beat a troll by talking to them, or about them. Their only goal is to get a response and once you give them that, they have won.
This forum is no differnt then any other forum for any other game I've played. You have the hardass mods, the power users with +500 posts who think they run the joint. You have the spammers, flamers, trolls, ect. You have the long winded, wanky, wall-of-text retards. This is just a sample of this generation's internet.
As far as the, if you dont like it, leave comment. This is correct. If I walk into a symposium of scientist and declare that the world is flat as a record, and rides ontop of four elephants who in turn ride ontop of a turtle, and they laugh at me, call me a loon and generaly fart in my direction, I have the choice to stay or leave. If I stay, then I can expect to continue to be farted in and around if I keep my nonsense up.
OP, if it is painful for you to be in any situation, I would suggest that change your situation. If you feel awkard on a bus because some guy keeps staring at you, then get off the bus. If you find a peice of glass in your steak dinner, stop eating the damn thing. If you have an alergy to wool, I implore you, to stop wearing woolen under garments.
I believe moderators should be seen as elders, to be respected by the younger members of the community, it amazed me to find out that some moderators in the forum are only 15 years old, and behave like that, too.
I started this forum when I was 17, I am now 19 and it is my full time job. As others have said, age is (quite) worthless when it comes to maturity, the way a moderator performs matters more than their age. If someone wants to be a moderator, that's their choice, it won't damage their "emotional health" because they're young, everyone is different. For some people being a moderator at that age would improve them, for others it might not, you can't make any assumptions based on their age... although I guess there is an increased chance they'll be driven insane by idiots who are condescending because of their age.
For me, I honestly believe the problem isn't age or maturity, it's attitude. There are many young people who are mature, there are many young people who are immature, many old people who are mature and old people who aren't mature, there are people from each group who act like morons on these forums and people who don't. Maturity doesn't stop you from being a ****.
I'm relatively immature (compared to the average person my age) and I don't post things like in the example...
It's very special to be able to have such a variety of opinions. Finally, it's almost impossible to trace a real line between the types of person VS age. Anyway, maturity never goes with age but experiences. Some death in the family or some trauma can change everything in the personnality and the maturity.
It's highly probable that the type of toughts goes with the level of "comfortness" they have (no difficulties, no lessons from the life, less maturity).
A person can be described. A person completes activities and experiences. These may be mainly social events for some children. Some children hold the knife to their throat at a young age, we are all different. A child age twelve may accomplish 50-100 thousand hours of gaining information.
Basically what I'm saying, there are people who have thousands of articles or objects they can cite, and there are people who can't. Some people are on their way to "maturity". Most people hang around the television and displace the other free time with physical pleasures. Maturity is as rare in adults of age seventy as it is in ages of forties and teens. Most people are deadlocked, vapid, whatever you want to call it. It's ****ing sad, and isn't helping prevent stds.
Also, while you work on this forum, they have a future to think about, and anything that gets in the way of their education is a bad thing (although they probably won't see it that way).
Their study should be a priority, and moderating a forum should never get in the way.
Considering how much a mod needs to be present on a busy forum, I'd say that the 2 are impossible to do at the same time.
Fair point...

I can show you a couple of your mods that have shown very little control in some situations, and have even made threads worse with their comments, all down to a lack of level-headed thinking.
I'm not going to name names, because this isn't a mod-bashing thread, but it is happening.
Please do, send it to me via PM. I will look into it.

With this forum being more than a hobby for you, I'm surprised you're not more selective with your mods, and that you don't keep an eye on them.
Getting the balance of mods right on any forum is hard, but when you add the element of youth into the mix, you need to keep on top of it, and act accordingly if need be.
We had over 1,000,000 posts in the space of 1 month, I can't look over everything and I spend a lot of time dealing with users. I try to keep an eye on moderators. You're welcome to pm me at any time with concerns and I'll raise it with the other admins too and see what we can do, we don't want crappy moderators :sad.gif:

I am a very dedicated tenth-grade student, and I've never neglected my work to be here. Although it's a stretch, it is very possible to be productive in two entirely different communities at the same time.

I would like to know if any of those cases stem from my actions, and I don't imagine you would be hesitant to send me more about them if they are.
To follow up on the older-moderator comment in the above post...
I believe an age restriction of 18 and above should be applied to moderators in this forum. Not just for the forum's sake but for the moderator's sake too, anybody under the age of 18, especially under the age of 16, has enough on their plate, what with growing up and school... The extra responsibility of moderating a forum with thousands of posts per day (Which they can take very seriously) could actually damage their emotional health.
I believe moderators should be seen as elders, to be respected by the younger members of the community, it amazed me to find out that some moderators in the forum are only 15 years old, and behave like that, too.
Respect has nothing to do with age, at least for me. That 15 year old (now 16 I believe) is far more mature than all the 4chan trolls that visit this forum. (I'd guess their ages range from 10-30, with some exceptions of course)

Just ignore the immature people. Handle them in a mature

kthx.
