I'm getting very tired of the degree of trolling, aggression, and sociopathy that I'm seeing around here; especially considering that this is supposed to be a moderated forum.
We have the SMP player community announcing that they and the single player community are now, "at war."
We have people requesting help and guidance on base defense from mobs, and receiving single word replies of, "Peaceful;" mercifully leaving out the implicit condemnation of, "scrub." This is in addition to other, related threads where player requests for help in dealing with mobs, has similarly met with elitist abuse.
Most recently, we have someone respond to the OP of a tutorial thread about obsidian casting, telling said OP that his post was redundant, because supposedly everyone else already knew how to do it; and then attempt to justify said behaviour further, when questioned about it.
If you want the ability to engage in unrestrained inhumanity, you possibly need to consider going back to /b/. I am aware that 4chan allows its' posters to fully indulge their mental illness, entirely without impediment or censure; so you might have got used to that.
A moderated forum, on the other hand, requires its' posters to behave like sane, civilised adults, without tendencies towards profane, spontaneous narcissistic rage. If you are someone who is sufficiently chronically unhappy, and/or otherwise mentally unstable due to your offline existence, that you simply cannot avoid abusing other people, I would also strongly recommend seeking professional psychiatric help.
I happen to enjoy the freedom allowed on this forum. Sure it allows people to act like dumbasses but then again that is a better representation of the diversity in real life. I can't stand forums that restrict people's ability to post how they feel, all that does is create a boring atmosphere.
My advice is to thicken your skin or find a stricter Minecraft community to join because most of us like it here.

Fighting ignorance and false information one post at a time.
For the record if I correct you it's not meant maliciously, but if you whine about it I AM laughing at you.
This is a big part of the problem. Whenever anyone questions it, you all immediately defend it. This also isn't a freedom of speech issue, or at least shouldn't be. If you verbally trash someone, and then when someone else calls you on it, cite freedom of speech as justification, you've got more serious problems than you might realise.
Having political freedom is supposed to mean that you moderate your own behaviour, so you don't need the law or the government to do it for you.
welcome to the internet, kinda makes you sad doesnt it?
I've been here since 1994. It wasn't always like this.
Since '97 and ditto. This forum is particularly poisonous though.

In my experience on the internet (and let’s be honest, I’ve spent a lot of time on the internet), 90% of people come off as complete idiots. And I don’t mean just unintelligent, I mean deliberately offensive, unfocused, repulsive, staggeringly stupid people.
Internet communities always start as these fresh, new, clean landscapes. The occupants are all like-minded individuals who share clear, common interests and are capable of intelligent discussions. But as the community begins to grow, average people start going to the site and invoking John Gabriel’s Greater Internet ****wad Theory. That is that a normal person, in combination with anonymity and an audience, will turn into a complete and total ****wad. As newcomers permeate the community, they begin spewing their toxic crap on everything and the content degenerates exponentially into a series of lolcats posts and flame wars. As the site rises in popularity, the spammers show up and further block any meaningful comment with porn or political messages.
@OP It sucks, and it's sad. But you know that appealing to children and/or the merely childish to grow us isn't going to have much of an effect. Might be a good idea to petition Notch to pay for more/better moderation. If I see another 'cool story bro' lame-ass sarcastic response to somebody trying to share their enjoyment of this game I think I'm gonna scream.

How did I defend anything? And... I didn't mention freedom of speech (although it does apply here), and I haven't verbally trashed ANYONE. Why are you directing anything in this post to ME? I posted 2 images. 1 which explains why people are assholes on the internet and another poking fun at myself.
If I had to choose between being an asshole and a whiney crybaby on the internet because some hurt my widdle feewings ober da interwebz, I'd have to side with the assholes.
Oh, there's kids on the internet? And that's my problem, why exactly? Tell their parents to supervise the little soft-skulled nimwits. It's not my job to babysit them or censor my speech so that I don't damage them psychologically.
And to the above posters: I've been on Local BBS's and the internet since 1991 and 1995, respectively.

I agree, but to be honest, the generation you're speaking to won't get it. They don't know the grand scheme of life, and existing behind a computer screen is all they've ever known. They don't realize the stress, hate, and anger they spread "for lulz" doesn't do any good for anyone. No, they will troll to the death, and never be remembered. Their accomplishments will be few. It's a shame.
I agree with the OP. This forum isn't the most newbie friendly, and some people could get put off the game after encountering some of the more braindead posters here...
The game speaks for itself. Don't let the forums ruin it for you.
most of the hate i see in the threads seem to stem from frustration. there really is no excuse for more than one thread on the first page about finding a spider riding skeleton, or a chunk error, or a myriad of things that can be easily found with the search bar or the wiki. i, for one, lurk as much as i can and practically live on the wiki because 9 times out of 10 my answer is there or in old threads where it's all been covered very well. it's a rare occasion that i have to ask about anything and even then i try to ask it in an existing thread that might have something to do with my question. yeah it'd be nice if we were all angels with infinite patience with people too lazy to look something up for a few minutes before thinking they must be the only one to see sand floating on the ceiling of a cave. unfortunately some of us are just tired of seeing the forum fill up with these useless threads that either contain questions with easy to find answers or small complaints.

in those fail try bringing up the question in a thread that is relevant to what you're asking
your very last resort should be to make a whole new thread about something. even then be prepared to get yelled at because you didn't look hard enough.
don't worry. the more you play and the longer you pay attention the sooner you'll be flaming noobs with the best of them.

So... petrus... can I ask what your life is like?
I mean, you must live in a world that others only dream of. To be able to pass judgment so confidently, with such conviction, it really makes me wonder if I should envy you.
Or maybe I shouldn't. Have you experienced the world yet? Something tells me you haven't, or you're stubbornly trying to pretend it isn't an ugly, cruel, ignorant, unforgiving place. Bad things happen to good people, your place in life is determined by how much is in your bank account, and we're all going to die.
So MY recommendation to you; my confident, convicted recommendation, is that you stop and think for a minute next time you try to spread political correctness and feel-good all around and realize just how much you take for granted. You even have the time and opportunity to whine about people being mean on a Minecraft forum? Time to reorganize some priorities in your life.
And P.S.: Threads like this contribute just as much to the negativity around here as the actual negativity does. Deny that all you like.

I've had this speech before, multiple times. Yes, I've been accused of being self-righteous. Yes, I've been accused of being a hypocrite. No, I'm not perfect either.
However, the thing that I've finally realised is, that if merely the act of *wanting* things to be better or different, makes me a hypocrite, then that is a title I'm entirely happy to wear. Attacking me misses the point, just as much as every other response I've had to this thread does.
The point is that people, all over the Internet, and not just here, treat each other abominably, on literally a momentary and consistent basis. I'm also not the only person who's getting a little tired of it; I know of others. Whenever it's brought up, however, it is immediately defended as justifiable and entirely normal; and if the person bringing it up persists, the focus is then very predictably turned on them.
My own theory as to the cause, is that at least a lot of it has to do with how powerless most of us are in our offline lives; yes, me included. Society is becoming more and more repressive, and more and more fascist; so we feel as though the Internet is pretty much the only place we have left, to still be able to express the rage and hopelessness that we feel about that.
We can use this technology as a psychological sewer if we want; a means of venting all of the crap inside ourselves that we aren't allowed to express offline. Or we can use it for something else...something which might even be able to assist in improving the offline situation as well.
But then again...you're probably right. I'm just another mentally unbalanced troll with too much time on my hands. Pay me no mind.
Yes-- there are a lot of assholes on the web. And yes, even with the goodly number of assholes that are on the web at any given time, there's more than the common number of them on these forums. I'm not quite sure why that is, but it's obvious to anyone who's spent any amount of time on forums that, vile and ugly places though many of them tend to be, this one can be particularly so. It really seems like that shouldn't be the case, just because this is a particularly cool game, but it is the case anyway. I tend to think that it's because this game, more than most, attracts socially inept, easily frustrated Aspergites. Regardless though, there does seem to be a particularly dense accumulation of assholes here.
I don't know what can be done about it though, other than bringing the ban hammer down on them, and that causes its own problems. Beyond the fact that heavy moderation often leads to a negative reputation for the site, the sort of assholes who do the sort of things the OP mentioned, being entirely oblivious to any standards of decent conduct, can be counted upon to completely fail to understand that any warnings they receive are a direct result of their own assholery and to instead ***** and moan about nazi oppression and complain bitterly about having their purported rights (to be an asshole on someone else's board, apparently) taken away.
The best one can do is to report the most egregious ones and ignore the rest. If all else fails, just remind yourself that there's probably nothing that you could do to make someone who's that much of an asshole any more miserable than he already is. Simply being him is probably sufficient punishment all by itself.

I'm finding that the people with the higher postcounts tend to be the most assholic. Maybe prolonged exposure is bad for your health.
They've just probably been playing Minecraft a lot longer, and are just a little bored.
