One user posted this, and I think I agree after watching the high turnover on that forum. For the past week, the bottom post on the first page of M&M has been less then a day old. (Today, it's only 2h old!)
The problem with the "Maps & Modding" section is its general nature results in lots of posts. It is currently being stuffed with the following:
1. Theme packs.
2. Map editors and external tools.
3. Game mods (actual mods that change the game play).
4. User created maps.
The top three should be in separate Modding sub-sections. The last should go far, far away for user generated maps.
On the downside, someone would have to sort through all 3000+ existing threads to separate the released themes, programs, mods, and maps from the suggestions, general complaints, help requests, and posts that should have been in another thread.
I think simply clearing it and then splitting it could work. Pertinent information could be reposted and stickies could be saved somewhere to be put back up.

I think this is a needed move, splitting those 4 into their own category would really help everyone out in the long run. I'm tired of having to wade through 20 theme packs just to find a single thread about a mapping program. If at the very least, split the theming into it's own section.
If you don't split it up, maybe require a better post naming system. Naming could work as follows:
[MOD] Autocart
[PROGRAM] Cartograph
[32x32 Texture] Doku RPG
[MAP] Broville v8
I agree with organizing the Modding section into subcategories. That board is currently a mess. The categories suggested in codewarrior's post would be perfect and would go a long way to sorting the mess.

As everyone else has said, this I support Fully. We really need to rework the forum and make it more user friendly and more organized/clean then what it is atm.
Why not post a poll thread on the front page with all the suggested ideas and see what the majority of the community would prefer? That way everyone could find it and more people could pitch in.
I think the main idea is to get the released programs and mod packs away from the fast-moving discussion area. It probably won't matter as much what the specific categories are. I still like the categories listed by the person I quoted in the OP: Graphical mods, Code Gameplay mods, External programs, Map downloads.
There are also a bunch of server mods and wrappers floating around the SMP discussion forum. They should get their own category or just be left in the SMP forum because they have almost nothing in common with client code mods.
1) Does the content being submitted contain programming and or data files? --Mapping/Modding 2) Does the content being submitted solely contain PNGs? --Textures Section
The texture packs should go in a skinning sub-forum imo. ;o

External tools and and maps should go into another.
That's how I would prefer it.

Also, the tags on the titles are necessary to begin with, it's kind of common sense to be honest.
