This is a topic to nearly the entire staff and community, i'm sure that some of us in the community, and some staff members have already seen our situation with our community?
If not then let's get down to this, the community itself can be a problem sometimes but what community isn't perfect? Some of our users aren't following the rules sometimes, and either from flaming other users, bashing other users, or simply being general idiots sometimes. (Including myself.) This might cause other users to leave, or react and cause a shitstorm of a topic to erupt, most of the times these get reported but sometimes they don't.
It just kind of dissappoints me on how some people. I don't know whats going on behind the scenes, but i do hope something is done about certain members of the community.
So that leaves me to a question, what is the staff doing about this? Are users being warned if not punished correctly enough to learn their lesson on not to do it again, or just to get a hint and say "Woah hold up, easy on the guy will you? This isn't a way to act civil."
You can't ban someone for simply being an idiot, unfortunately. Although, some cultures allow you to knife them.
I'm not saying ban them, i'm saying give them a warning or do something for them to notice their wrong doing and show them what may happen if they do it again. Unless they do so already and apparently people aren't listening very well.
We do use the official warnings a lot for borderline rule-breakers.
Personally, for people that are being a nuisance or could simply use some guidance, I PM them. That's usually all it takes.
I think that if someone is really bothering you, you should send them a PM and tell them why. Many times they respond nicely (though sometimes not so nicely). And remember, if such a situation with PMs comes up, do not forget that you can also report PMs.
Finally, if there is a forum-wide issue, please do not hesitate to PM or e-mail the admins. Not that this thread is an issue, but sometimes making a public thread about something bugging you does more hurt than harm. Be sure to keep that in mind.
There's a difference between malicious breaking of the rules and just being unaware. If you see someone doing something wrong and they're new why don't you, as a fellow forum member, send them a friendly Private Message explaining what they're doing wrong? I know I'd appreciate it if I was a new member, if they're genuinely oblivious to the rules pointing them out can't do any harm :smile.gif:
This is about capital letters. Capital letters! Nothing in the rules says you can't use them; though they might be discouraged, the fact that anyone is actually offended by them is absolutely ridiculous. The post you reference is a totally legitimate post. The half dozen people that responded simply to call the original poster a noob or complain about capital letters are the ones in violation of the rules.
To answer your question, we handle every report that comes in. How we handle them is none of your concern.
Personally, I hate the fact that immaturity ruins it for everyone. It's a case of "just because you can do anything on the internet doesn't mean you should. Older members have a mental filter that comes natural with age: the ability to argue and curse while still remaining civil. Younger members have no such luck: they can't quite adjust to some "taboo" behaviors being allowed while we lock and warn and ban for others.
But Minecraft, while not explicitly stated as such, is family-friendly. There's no ESRB rating for it, and even if it were it'd be T (teen) at worst, meaning there WOULD be children playing. And being that the game is entirely online, they'll be here as well.
So I see it as something the community is going to have to accept: there WILL be immature members around here. A lot of them. And they're going to break the rules, because hey, this is the internet and we're not enforcing E-Rated rules here.
So as Real said, please report everything that needs to be reported. I, personally, won't ban a kid for being a kid (within reason, of course) but I do think that the more mature the forum is maintained at the cleaner and healthier it'll be in the long run.
You can't expect communitys to be perfect, all communitys have there problems. The moderators on this forum are'nt particulary harsh as many other forums are but, the community is small so people really don't need to be set an example of quite yet.You really don't see the ninja moderators work but it's there.I believe when this forum grows larger the moderators with get harsher.
I was once a part of a community of extreme strictness. You had to read the rules and answer some questions - which means if you didn't know the answer you'd have to read about it.
I passed with flying colours obviously. But I was banned the same day for trolling (ME? A TROLL!? Pfft - ludicrous). It was a bit tooooo strict.
Oh! I even posted about this in the other thread, too! Thank you, past self, for furthering my lack of need of re-typing up a wallpost.

Everyone, please keep in mind that this is what happens when communities become popular. It's almost an inevitability, really, since this happens to almost every single forum that has a popular game. And yes, while there are people out there who you just want to throw a knife inside their eye and then cut off all circulation in their lungs by suffocating them with a pillow filled with anthrax (while you're wearing a protective suit) and then taking their corpse and sticking it into a meat grinder, thus scattering all their remains on your lawn to decompose so that your carnivorous plant garden can absorb the nutrients and every single fiber of their being (I know I feel this way many times) but I'm afraid that there's nothing to stop that process completely, only to moderate it and slow it down.
The admins and mods of this forum try hard, but we can't ban idiots on the grounds of being idiots. It'd be an abuse of the rules to do so, and half the forum would be gone. We also don't have a proper warning system (yet) either, all the warns we deliver are either verbal or written down in a little message than no one can see but us (this will change in the forum move for the better, expect visible warns and more organized bans, especially warning levels). If there is a thread that is a duplicate of another, show them and point it out. If it's something that's been suggested countless times, report it so a mod/admin can handle it. The rules already show up for people that register, clear and outlined.
And hey, another way to tackle this problem is to, Oh, I don't know, guide them? Everyone starts new sometimes, even I, when I started out here was new at this (granted I lurk before joining, but still, I had my moments) and look how far I came. Those new, confused, and somewhat idiotic people could actually be diamonds in the rough, and instead of sculpting them into potentially awesome people, you're insulting them to the point of no return and turning them down. There will always be also those who are just pure idiots that need a good banning, and very likely will be banned, but to those who are just confused and new to this, don't give them your hate and anger as you're demonstrating, give them logic and reasoning. And if they reject that, then expect the mods to be on their case, as we always are, ever watching and ever vigilant of things even when you don't seem to notice it.
So yeah, stop whining and suck it up.
I crossed off one line, and hey! It fits perfectly. Read it again.
Yeah, I was getting pretty angry at the inability of reading the forums with the newer wave of what felt like 8 year olds. I've since then just given up on reading some sections altogether. Found it was unhealthy. Why don't we have a super spam section yet for all the new people? :l

Forum Games. Even then, we moderate a bit there.
Especially since many of those who enjoy spamming do so because it's wrong. An area in which it's allowed doesn't hold much appeal.
