I've been thinking a bit about this new forum, and for the most part (after a brief adjustment), I really like it. It works very well.
However, there are just a few little things that have been bugging me specifically that I'd like to address:
1) Smilies: With all the new blocks in /indev/ and with all the crafting formulae out there, I'm sure that everyone would love to see a full list of blocks, including a "blank" one and one for each craftable item, added. I know this has been suggested before, but I thought as long as I was making this thread I should mention my support for it. If it's an issue of keeping the Smilie area clean, I've seen forums that have a "more" button that brings up a pop-up window containing a LOT more.
2) Pics: There's a lot of issues with image size around here, with even the normal Minecraft window pics not fitting completely within the post area. Two suggestions: a) widen the forum slightly so that they fit, or :cool.gif: enable the use of the BBCode [SHOT][/SHOT] to automatically resize the pics to the width of the forum (the pic also becomes a link for you to see it full-sized). I would also like to encourage the use of JPEG over PNG, since PNG uses quite a bit more dandwidth and takes longer to load, especially on slower connections.
3)Swearing: I mentioned this before, back when I first joined. I'm not going to get too into it because frankly I'm not even happy that I have to mention it....
But it is inexcusable, to me, that an "offical forum" for a game that caters to children and teens doesn't have some form of limit on what language is "acceptable." I'm no saint, but I recognize that there may be children on here so I make it a point to filter my posts to PG. I consider it a mark of decency and respect. I would like to ask, politely, that some sort of policy be looked at. Thanks.
EDIT: PS, do we really need that transition page after we've made a post or edit? Especially when doing a Quick Reply. Thanks.

We could always add in limits to how wide images can be. As for widening the forums, I'd have to talk to Aera about it. Also, even though you have a point about the JPEG/PNG thing, people should still be free to choose their image files.

Actually, we do have some limits on cursing, and most of the mods are watching over that. Also, filters will never happen. Ever.
I agree with the smilies bit.
I also agree that there should be an image resizing BBCode. I've never heard of "[SHOT][/SHOT]", however, I have heard of [TN=<width>][/TN]. The height auto-adjusts to the width. This way, we could resize the images we want to post to whatever we wish.
Swearing all depends on what words the user is using. Obviously, you wouldn't want any racial terms to be used, but the occasional "damn" and "****" are fine, as long as they aren't overused.
It's good to know those things are being worked on/looked after.
I agree about being able to choose the format for the pics, I just mentioned it as a suggestion for those who happen to read it. I also agree that swear filters shouldn't be applied here; they're too easy to get around and too arduous to maintain.
The "Read Before Posting" topic mentions abusive language, but nothing regarding swearing outright. I really only mentioned it again because I've been noticing a lot of language around (even in thread titles in this forum) that are really beyond what I'd hope would be the "limit." If there is a policy on cursing, I'd like to suggest that the limits be explicit in the "Read Before Posting" topic, and that an option for "This post contains offensive language" be added to the reporting screem. Thanks again.

[SHOT] is used on the Atari Forums, which I know well. It's short for [SCREENSHOT] but shortened because it's easier. It may be custom for all I know. EIther that or [TN] would work better than what's going on now.

Lolwhat? The game was never stated and never has that it is directed towards a specific crowd, it's for anyone who deems it fit.
It's pretty implied. No, it's not expressly marketed towards anyone, but from what I've seen it's certainly played by a lot of kids. It's only decent to self-filter. And it shows respect towards others in the community not to curse at them. Call it "real world practice." :wink.gif:
I notified the admins about the existence of this thread. You have some decent suggestions.
(Personally, though, I don't think any forum should filter any words. I'm pretty much against most censoring. I think it's up to the parents to decide what their children can see, not the content creators. That's just me though.)
Pretty much as said already, things are being worked on. Most of them are out of my abilities, so I can't really comment on how much. And a censor filter would cause one hell of an ugly backlash. It was attempted once on the old forums. It did not go over well, at all.
Yeah, I don't want an actual filter, just some decency. Dropping F-bombs left and right doesn't say "family-friendly forum" to me, is all, and with some forums that's perfectly fine, but official forums for what is decidedly a "family-friendly game" I don't think it's appropriate. As long as it's considered, I'm content.

I don't think I'm being understood. It's ok, though; it's not my place to do anything about it, so I'll let it die now.
I'm not thinking about this for me; I'm 29, nothing much bothers me. I'm just trying to think about the younger ones who come on here. If I had an under-14-year-old who liked Minecraft, I may not want him/her around such rampant swearing, especially if s/he starts repeating it as kids often do. I think it's a mistake to say "let the parents deal with it," because I'm sure the first instinct will be to block this site. I would rather see the forum family-friendly than that. I also don't buy into "freedom of expression" like that. People are quite capable of expressing any emotion, no matter how strong, without resorting to the extremes of foul language.
Ah well, I remain in the minority. :| Thanks for listening.
Actually, an opt-out filter would be a compromise and not a restriction.
Members who can take swearing can turn off the filter, meanwhile younger children(unless they are looking for it), won't get in trouble.

I disagree with you, therefore you are wrong.

I can agree to all of these and the current "face" smilies are horrible... Now about swearing, unless you have super sheltering parents the little kids probably know what it is, hell I've seen six year olds use **** 8 times in one sentence oh and if censoring occurs I quit :l
Ditto. And I'm not even worried about them being grounded so much, but it's one thing to expose them, it's quite another to be an "official forum" that essentially supports exposing them.
Fun fact: I would not have purchased this game if I couldn't use curse words on the forums discussing the game. I've dealt with the extensive and restrictive moderation in Wurm Online and that pretty much put me off those kinds of forums for forever. Being able to speak my mind how I want is very important to me.
And anyway, you're on the internet. A cursory googling of even the most inane subject will reveal worlds of depravity people in the past century never could have even fathomed. Curse words are the least of your worries, especially if you're hiding your distaste for them under the veneer of "well i dont think it's bad but what if they get grounded??! D=!". You should at least be honest with us and yourself about why you don't like them.
